Copan Ruinas is probably the second most popular destination for visitors in Honduras primarily because it is the base to see the best Mayan ruins in the country. I knew about the “Macaw Mountain” bird park but wasn’t expecting it to be anything special and it turns out to be just as good as the ruins. To have both of these in the same very scenic and visitor friendly (plenty of good hotels and restaurants) town make this a great place to stay for a couple of days. Macaws, the largest members of the parrot family, are native to this part of Central America and were considered sacred by the Mayans, so there is a link between these two quite different attractions, though this might not have been intentional as the move of the bird park ... read more

Unquestionably one of the highlights of Honduras are the Bay Islands. We’ve come to Utila which is the smaller and cheaper of the 2 main islands (the other is Roatan) and also happens to be closer to the coast so easier to reach by fast ferry. We’ve here for 10 fun dives with one of the PADI dive schools (Dive Altons) which friends had recommended. Utila is really all about diving. There are over a dozen dive schools here all offering much the same sort of deal, but each school has their own slightly different emphasis – some have a bit of a party scene and others a more serious style. Altons seems to be about right for us and has good on-site accommodation which is free on the days you dive with them. The dive ... read more

On Tuesday morning, 3rd of April, I took a very early bus to Copán in Honduras. We left at 4AM to avoid heavy traffic in Antigua, Guatemala City and the border. Fortunately, our shuttle was rather empty, just 6 people, and so we all had space enough to stretch and sleep some more. The night before, at 10PM, Max, Jennifer and Rebecka, the Swedish guys from our hike to Acatenango, had decided to join me on my trip to Copán and I had managed to get the number of the shuttle company from the night watch in my hostel and they had managed to reserve a free spot in the shuttle for the next morning. The bus ride was a bit longer than expected, but that was because the others in the shuttle ordered on our ... read more

Estoy madrugado pero emocionado.... read more

Honduras: Big sharks, Freediving and scary Waterfalls. 12/07 - Utila - diving Mecca There is a video made by a traveller called 'Utila, You'll never wanna leave'. From talking to some of the tourists that now live there, it seems quite true - people seem to get stuck! Utila is one of the Bay islands, it sits on the second largest coral reef in the world (after the Great barrier). There's a differently named dive site every few hundred metres. It's a small island, 13km long and 5km wide. Life is based around a main strip, with a couple of small beaches. Most of the remaining island is impenetrable wilderness. Shame. We'd arrived after a really long journey from Nicaragua. We'd left Leon at 2am by shuttle (the first tourist shuttle we'd used), and arrived at ... read more

„Honduras has cheap diving“, was all I heard about this country, before I crossed the border in El Poy. Due to a late arrival I spent the night in Nuevo Ocotepeque in a very simple hotel (no backpacker destination - no hostel). After arrival, hungry Antonia looked for some food and FAILED. Nothing except fried chicken, this must be the place where they invented fried chicken – every restaurant sold ONLY FRIED CHICKEN… since I decided a few weeks earlier to exclude meat from my diet I went to bed hungry that night. What town serves JUST fried chicken???? That was an awesome start Honduras… The next day I spent to 90% of my time on the bus because the bus drivers drove five times through and around the town to avoid missing a single passenger. ... read more

First stop in Honduras was Copan Ruinas. I arrived in the evening at a pretty B&B just outside the centre to stay in a room called Luna (the moon) which had a lovely terrace to view the night sky. Not many street lights so I could see all the stars! I went to a local restaurant and luckily they managed to make me some dinner before the electricity cut out. It was quite windy so I ate my dinner using the torch light of my mobile rather than by candelight but it worked! Apparently they were doing some work on cables in the town so the electricity cut a few times whilst I was there. I had more great views from the B&B in the daytime as they have a lovely garden and the terrace overlooks ... read more

Honduras is a country with some dangerous regions because of gang war,etc... The Atlantic side is more quiet and has many tourist facilities. We stayed in a very nice B&B in the mountains. I give it a 5 stars: nice gardens and surroundings, quiet, comfortable, good meals, owners always ready to suit your needs. We visited most of the interesting things in the region: 1- Pico Bonito national park: entrance was 2 minute from our B&B. Nice forest, but very steep trails! 2- Cayos cochinos: series of corals keys + 2 real islands. Beautiful, good for snorkeling. We saw the famous pink(ish) boas. 3- Cuero Y Salado National park: nice tour in the mangroves to see birds, monkeys, and yes one manatee. We stayed one week. Our minds disconnected after 2 days, so we really ... read more
