Background: Once part of Spain's vast empire in the New World, Honduras became an independent nation in 1821. After two and a half decades of mostly military rule, a freely elected civilian government came to power in 1982. During the 1980s, Honduras proved a haven for anti-Sandinista contras fighting the Marxist Nicaraguan Government and an ally to Salvadoran Government forces fighting leftist guerrillas. The country was devastated by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, which killed about 5,600 people and caused approximately $2 billion in damage.

Tela

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Tela
What hit me first about Tela was its obvious state of poverty. For a place advertised as the up-and-coming tourist beach hot spot in Central America, it needs a lot of work. Being the off season, there wasn't enough people for a Garifuna tour. So I went for second best and tried the Garifuna Museum but soon found out the building was there but the museum didn't exist. When that fell through, there seemed to be nothing to do. The town is small and fairly boring. I followed a recommendation and took a taxi about 2k out of town to the [View Full Entry]

Here were are on the north coast of Honduras.... in the little town of Tela. Not much to this place really.... kinda small and pokey. Well, most of the towns along the north coast of Honduras are just that. But, one really feels as though they are off the beaten track when they are here... especially that of mainstream tourism. Actually, even the backpacker trail seems to run a little thin in this part of the country. Well, back in Copan we ended with a bang by enjoying a morning of ziplining through the forest canopy. It was priceless... truly!! The [View Full Entry]

Steamy morning at the Mango Inn
so we wake up in san pedro, opting for a leisurely journey to utila rather than an aggressively early start that would allow us to catch the 9:30am ferry from la ceiba to utila. after all that travel from the day before, we decide that the 4:00 ferry will work just fine, especially since we wouldn't be diving until the following day anyway. and we can also hit tela, a sleepy beachtown on the way to la ceiba. we pack up our bags and head out into the dazingly hot sun to catch a cab to the bus station. apparently a [View Full Entry]

La Ceiba- Utila Ferry

Our last evening in Antigua was spent with our new travelling companions, 5 others plus a trip leader, ie. the man who´s going to book all the buses and sort all the hotels for us. That doesn´t mean he holds our hands and shepherds us around and we´ve got plenty of time to do our own thing too. I was still not feeling too good so was straight to bed after dinner for an early start the next morning. The minibus to take us just across the border into Honduras left around 7am. Luckily, being a small group we had quite [View Full Entry]

Tela and Omoa

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Tela
Tela and Omoa are located at Hundoras Bay not so much away from the Bay Islands. The water is nice especially at Omoa, where it gets a green color due to the high vegitation. The beaches are covered with black sand. The trip itself, especially between Omoa and Guatemala boarder is a very nice ride through Guatemala´s rain forest. I would say the best nature and vegitation I have seen so far. After spending about a week in Hundoras, I am happy to be back in Guatemala this time heading towards Livingstone. [View Full Entry]

Sweet Water
Sweet Water
Can´t see the steam but it was hot.
Río Dulce After a wonderful week in San Andrés, we climbed back on the gringo trail and headed for the Honduran border. Our last stop in Guatemala was Río Dulce (Sweet River). It was a cramped and dirty town, centered around tourist buses and street stalls tightly packed on the only road in town - it was a very drastic change after our week in sleepy, non-touristy San Andrés. We took a small motor boat across Lago de Izabel (which empties into the river) to our hostel - a bamboo and thatch complex with a bit of a tiki-bar vibe. It [View Full Entry]

SURPRISE!!!

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Tela
WOW!! So Aric arrived in Honduras last Saturday, and then we went to the airport to pick up his "friend" on Sunday...who actually ended up to be my MOTHER!!! She decided last minute to come too and SURPRISED me like none other!! Incredible! We rented a car and got back to Copan Sunday night, then spent the next three days... - visiting the ruins - exploring Copan Ruinas and meeting my friends - going to a co-op coffee finca - trying some "exotic" fruits - visiting Mayatan school - going to the Bird Park - Horse back riding to La Pintada [View Full Entry]

Hello again! One last post before we head out to dinner and some discos tonight. Well, our stay in the Tela area has been interesting to say the least. We spent Wed. night at the Mango Inn which was a nice hostel in istelf, but set off a really noisy street which thankfully quieted during a crazy thunderstorm, but started up again at about 3 when the rain stopped. Ah well. We got up early and went next door for breakfast which wasn´t bad. When we finished, a woman came in with a bag, trying to sell what was inside. We [View Full Entry]

Yes, we went behind them, into caves, jumped from cliffs into pools, and jumped 20m into the pool below. Two days in a row.
Hi everybody. Well, if you haven´t realized it yet, we´re doing fine. The hurricane hit the Nicaragua-Honduras border which is inhabited by small tribes people so it was probably the best place to hit in terms of population size. The islands were clear out of the way by the time we made it to the brewery (go figure) but it was great there anyway. The first day we went to the falls which was so spectacular that we went back later on the second day. Earlier in the morning on the second day we toured the Lago de Yojoa via rowboat [View Full Entry]

(I thought I already had posted about my trip to Tela...but it's gone....the magic of computers I guess. So here's try number two!) Tela is a small "city" on the North Coast of Honduras, about 5 hours from Copan Ruinas. I went with Nicole, a student I met at Escuela Ixbalanque (a Spanish School in Copan). We were both eager to get out of tiny Copan for a weekend of FUN IN THE SUN. We spent our first day on the beach and got COOKED! I was baked red by the afternoon. But it was worth it to be back by [View Full Entry]
