Welcome to 5th GradeThis pretty much sums up the sentiment of the first day. Hopefully we can we keep up this energy for the whole year.
I was so nervous last night that I think I got a total of about 3 hours of sleep before I finally got out of bed at 5 this morning. We have to leave the house by 6:15 a.m. in the morning to get our dazed/tired bottoms to school every morning by 6:40 a.m. as the first class starts at 7:00a.m. This normally wouldn't be so bad except I didn't arrive home from the school until about 8:30 p.m. this evening.
The story that occupies those almost 14 hours is as follows: Arrive at school at 6:40 to a classroom already half full of bustling mini-munchkins. I suppose I shouldn't really call them mini-munchkins anymore. They would probably prefer young adults. At 7a.m. they all promptly lined up at the door in two lines (one girls, one boys) and went down to the open/auditorium space. I'm glad they knew what was going on. Apparently we had an assembly. After a short assembly consisting of praying, reviewing new rules and introducing staff, we were released back to our classrooms to tackle the day ahead of us.
The kids are quite an interesting group. They are at the age where they can't decide whether they would like to be children or young adults and I have some of both in my classroom. We played get to know you games and I was informed that they already knew what Heads Up 7 Up was. We also had classmate trivia which consisted of each student writing down a little known fact about themselves and putting it in a bag from which we drew a piece of paper out and tried to guess who wrote it. My favorite little know fact was, "What color my boxers?"...Well they kind of got the idea.
I also went around the room and asked how many people were in each student's family. The answers usually went something like this - "My family, we are 4 and 5 count my dog.". The most common extra family member was a rottweiler, but we also had one french poodle owned by the child with blue boxers.
After all the "Bye Mees Jenna"s and straightening up of my room and the reworking of lesson plans, it was time to have a meeting with Meester Cesar (director) to discuss our first day of school. Hey, what can I say, I had a blast. Followed shortly after by another assembly for parents at around 6 to introduce the staff and discuss the upcoming school year.
Finally, I was time to drag my weary bum home and into bed. Soon I will be getting up to do it all over again. Just the thought makes me tired :) Good night to all my friends and family (we are 3 and 4 count dog). Buenas Noches.

Jenna, that picture looks like half the pictures in our power point last year :) It sure brings back memories. Remember little "M" and the way he would move his hands for each picture. So cute! Sounds like you have a fun classroom. It also reminds me how we only had 4 boys out of 17 children and they seem to be in ALL the pictures!
