After getting through xmas and new year drinking heavily most days with the boys from Boyce in Idaho in the US I decided to spend a few relaxing days on the beach while they practised for their Scuba Diving certificate.
Most days would be spent catching a motorboat or lancha to the beautiful and sunny white beaches of West Bay and spending the afternoons reading and catching the rays and actually getting to see the sun set unlike the carribean coast resorts in belize and mexico.
This place is really amzing and the only downside is the sheer amount of mosquitos and biting sand flies that are in abundance on the island. I suppose I should have heeded the rouhg guide book which stated about the three different types of malaria which have been diganosed on this island and about the ways of prevention but I was being a bit of a tight arse and saving my good insect repellant for the amazon basin in colombia and brasil. I managed to susain about 18 new bites during my five days here which is amazing considered a totalled about half a dozen through my travels in mexico, belize, guatemala, el
salvador and mainland honduras so far. The saving grace is I am taking the strong and serious malaria tablets for prevention which have only caused me one side effect so far which is occasional vision impairment for a multi second. well they do say that prevention is better than cure !
The island here has a mixture of carribean and spanish influence but often the locals will speak english all the time which is a bit frustrating for improving my spanish at this present time so I must remember to get back down to mainland Honduras or Nicaragua to get back on the language learning corridor.
I have decided that I dont have the stomach for another ferry trip back to the mainland so I have booked a flight for 110 US dollars or about 65 pounds to the capital of Honduras....Tegusigalpa......where I can start to make more quick time to south america because I am running behind on schedule for events that are happening in Latin America.....
