All I have to say is I LOVE COPAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Woke up at 1 AM yesterday morning flew out from Dulles at 4:15AM and arrived in Honduras at 9:30AM. After a few hours of waiting I jumped on a bus and NO this was not a typical bus of death like the ones of Guatemala and Peru. It was air-conditioned, had a private guard, and they gave us free food and drinks. I arrived in Copan at 5:30 and met my family.
The house is so nice, the rooms are set up around an internal courtyard. I have my own private room and BATHROOM - YES no more sharing with 6546486 million people like in Guatemala. It is complete with an ELECTRIC water heater thus abolishing those awkward conversations about turning on the gas or yet not having gas at all. I also have a TV in my room complete with ESPN in English. Mostly I just watch spanish reggaeton videos-haha gotta practice my spanish....
The homestay isn't awkward at all....unlike those days in Guatemala (which I think is because I have more confidence and actually can SPEAK SPANISH decently now) haha, the layout is different also so i dont see people as much. i live with a mother who has a grown son and is married and they have 2 kids i think?? Around the ages of 5-8 or so. Everyone is really friendly and we even have a servant who cooks and cleans for me and the family . It's awesome - I love it here.
The weather of Copan is amazing I love it- its about a 80-90 degrees and I am constantly sweating but enjoying every minute of it . There are many palm trees, other leafy plants and the sun is always shining. The cobblestone streets give it a small town feel -haha which it is- I walked the whole town in about 15 mins.
The people are so friendly here and not too mention GORGEOUS! The people don't look at all like Guatemalans or Peruvians. Honduras is 98% percent ladino (which is european and central american) as opposed to the large indigeneous populations of Peru and Guatemala. This means the people are lighter skinned and look more Caucasian mixed with a latino. Almost every person I see on the street is good looking- loving the new change.
Copan from what I gather -is very different from other parts of Honduras. Other parts are more similar to Guatemala. In Copan it is so SAFE-haven't seen any large machine guns yet and people tell me its safe to walk alone at night. people leave their house doors open during the day and almost everyone smiles at you in the street. Even the men don't yell at you as you walk down the street - instead if anything they politely wink - a much appreciated change for me being a young chcia from the other countries.
I enjoyed my first class at Ixbalanque Spanish School. I managed to get lost (OF COURSE!!) and some nice man walked me to school . Everyone at the school (which is all women,, its owned by 2 sisters and an all female teaching staff) was extremely welcoming and friendly. I'm looking forward to going back tomorrow. In fact I'm loving it so much I am thinking about spending 5 weeks here instead of 3!!!
time flies-hasta el proximo blog (until the next blog)
