Background: Once part of Spain's vast empire in the New World, Honduras became an independent nation in 1821. After two and a half decades of mostly military rule, a freely elected civilian government came to power in 1982. During the 1980s, Honduras proved a haven for anti-Sandinista contras fighting the Marxist Nicaraguan Government and an ally to Salvadoran Government forces fighting leftist guerrillas. The country was devastated by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, which killed about 5,600 people and caused approximately $2 billion in damage.

Two day off in Antigua are well spent drinking with the locals to celebrate Independence Day. Did you know.... Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and Panama all share the same Independence Day 15 September 1821. This was only from the Spanish though, they then had to get independent from the Mexicans as well. We sampled the local delight of Aguadiente (picture on the Globebusters blog with new Colombian face hair!) which is US $1 a bottle. We had US $8 worth and its 36% proof - Then on to the obligatory Irish bar, O'Reilly's run by a Norwegian. This was bettered on our [View Full Entry]

They say you learn about yourself when you travel. One of the things I’ve learned (or resigned myself too) is the fact that I don’t sleep well, or at all, on buses and planes. Unless I’m lying down my body just won’t sleep. Tipping the seat back a degree or two isn’t enough to fool the old bones into thinking it’s time for a nap. If I do nod off momentarily I wake up excited that I’ve managed to drop off for a while, until I check my watch and realise only 10 minutes have passed. I count myself lucky to [View Full Entry]

19th MAY 2009 - A LITTLE TIME IN COPAN!! My alarm went off at around 3.30am. I tried putting the covers over my head and wishing I could just have another hour at least but unfortunately, the time kept ticking and I had to get up. After a quick wash, I dressed and we headed down to wait for the bus. Sooooo sleepy and as usual being on the mini bus was like being on a rollercoaster but I did manage to get a little bit of shut eye!! Would have got more sleep if 2 English guys hadn’t kept jabbering [View Full Entry]

Hola! This time...beautiful Copan ruins!!! After Palenque in Mexico and Tikal in Guatemala it was time for a bit smaller Copan ruins, but with much, much more details! Lovely! As one of the greatest treasures of art and architecture in the Americas, Copán is known for its beautiful temples, altars and stelae. The stelae are three to five meters tall and two to three meters around. Carved in extremely intricate high relief, they are portraits of the greatest rulers in the history of the city. Many are round on one side (the figure side) and flat on the other. The flat [View Full Entry]

Just wanted to write a few thoughts on central america. Lets start with the important things, gingers! 5 in mexico, 1 in Guatemala ( geordie girl toasting in the sun) so not sure that counts, el Salvador no gingers and Honduras 1 in danli a local who looked suspiciously like an english football hooligan. Crap maths now this is important. No matter what shop or restaurant you go in and no matter how little you buy even if its only 2 items costing say 30 lempiras and 20 lempiras you can be guaranteed that the intelectual behind the counter will use [View Full Entry]

Okay, so unfortunately the following writings are added retrospectively. There were plenty of places to access the internet, we just didnt take the time to utilize them. We set off for Copan from SPS on the Hedman Alas bus system...it's a 'high class' bus, with reclining chairs, free pair juice and cookies, and they showed the movie "Serendipity" on the way. The bus even has a restroom, the total round trip cost of the bus ride was $34/ person. Not too bad, and the journey was direct and 2.5 hours. Luckily for us, Copan was celebrating its patron saint, so there [View Full Entry]
