Rachel, Angel and I headed to Roatan in the Carribean for 3 days of sun and (hopefully) relaxation!
We left Copán on the 7am Cassasola bus for San Pedro Sula. After a 3 hour ride we got something to eat on the bus station, then got the Sultana bus to La Ceiba...another 3 + hours. A taxi ride got us to the dock in plenty of time to buy our ferry ticket, check out luggage and sit for a minute. I bought some huge, delicious grapes while we sat waiting to get on the ferry, The Galaxy. Bad idea.
Our trip over was very, very, VERY choppy. I got a bit sea sick. Yuck. After about an hour and a half we landed, got our luggage and a taxi to West End. The taxi driver was great. I think taxi drivers are some of my favorite people in Honduras. I love having conversations with them during our 20-30 minute rides, whether it's to and from the airport and bus station, or on an island in the middle of the Carribean. Great people.
We checked into the Dolphin Hotel. They had one "emergency" room left. Very tippy-top. It was
really spacious, though a bit of a storage room. Worked for us though. Plus they gave us a discount the second two nights...and we each had our own bed (a very nice thing when you're feeling sick)...although Angel wasn't thrilled about the lumpy pillows.
The first night we headed out for sea food. I had shrip, Angel had a lobster and pasta, and Rachel got a mamoth plate of king crab. Already worth the trip for her!
Day two Angel wasn't feeling well... (while I was feeling much better and ready to enjoy the SUN and SAND!!). We had a delicious breakfast at Rudy's. Banana pancakes. Wow! I really miss pancake breakfasts!
Rachel and I walked the hour trip to West Bay, the super nice beach of Roatan. Gorgeous water. White sand. Fantastic. We laid on the beach, swam in the sea, watched some fútbol in one of the resturaunts... Angel joined us and we spent the rest of the day at West Bay, including the sunset. Incredible. Very romantic. 😊
Day three was DOLPHIN TIME!! We got a busito to Anthony's Key Resort and spent our morning interacting with the dolphins. Dophins' skin is very
Dolphin Time
Rachel, Angel and I with our dolphin, Fiona. rubbery...and their teeth, although not very sharp, can draw blood. Our dolphin, Fiona, got a bit frisky and put her mouth around my left leg. I've got battle wounds. Great scars to tell my grandkids about some day. "Yup, your granny was attacked my dolphins in the Carribean." Angel was jealous it didn't happen to her. Usually that kind of stuff does.
Acutally, I didn't mind the dolphin bite as much as the sand fleas. On the beach at West End (where we were staying) they absolutely ate me up. I left with these itchy bumps all over my legs and back. Awful. In West Bay they're not as bad.
Day four...and final day...I took a water taxi back to West Bay to hang out on the beach for a little bit longer before we headed off. The water taxis were fantastic. 50 lempiras (about $2.50-$3) took you between West End and West Bay. I loved riding the little yellow boats. Angel and I had memories of being on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota where our mom grew up.
By noonish we were showered, packed and ready to go. Got a busito to Coxen Hole, a main town
on the island. The middle of the island is just as beautiful as the beaches...ok, maybe not AS beautiful. But it has forests, and the greenery really is lovely. In Coxen Hole we got a taxi for the ferry and made it in time for the 2pm departure.
The ride back was SO MUCH BETTER than the ride over. (Actually, a taxi driver in San Pedro had warned me the week before. "Take a flight to the island and then take the ferry back.") Plus, we sat outside (the fresh air helps), and I took dramamine (which puts me to sleep). I had a great hour or so nap and woke up with a dark shade of red on my face.
We went threw the Burger King drive-threw with our taxi driver, and made it to the bus station just in time to get on the bus heading to San Pedro Sula. The girls had to use the bathroom, so as the bus is pulling out I calmly tell the driver, "There's 2 more muchachas coming." They finally come running to the bus...and then got the true Central American traveling experience. Since the bus was full we stood and sat in the isle and at the back of the bus.
We ended our day of travel at the Tamarindo hostal in San Pedro Sula. A cute place. Rachel flew out the next morning and Angel and I returned to Copán.
I definitely LOVED spending some days at the beach. Roatan is beautiful. I'm glad I got to experience it before I left.
