Today I was up early and so I went up on deck to take some photos of the ship without people in them. We were pulling up to Labadee for our first port. After I was done I went back to the room and Nikki was up so we got dressed and went to breakfast. Nikki and I are not huge lay on the beach people so we were not in a big rush to get off the ship. We had breakfast and took some time wandering around the ship before going down to the gangway. After we got off the ship we walked to Adrenaline Beach and found some chairs that were in the shade. It was going to be a hot day and we wanted a place to go where we could cool relax ... read more

Monday, Feb 17, Labadee, Haiti, private Royal Carabian cruise port, LOVELY We did not bring cameras, so see the propaganda brochure for info.Just beautiful, lunch was delicious, jerk chicken, pork ribs, corn and beans,I swam at 3 beaches, love that tropical water, air temp is 26 degree Celsius, 79F.We rode a ferry to the last beach, then came back to the ship in stages on various trams, stopping at beaches, town square for "window" shopping and lunch.Well organized, and all free unless you want extras.Tonight, ice show, Frozen in Time, yes they have a skating rink on board.Tomorrow, Falmouth, Jamaica, where we will pretend to shop for diamonds to get free wifi! As the ship wifi is not conducive to Ipad use. Terry found a hidden back deck on level 12 with a great view, hope ... read more

One of our stops was at Labadee, Haiti. This is a private beach owned by Royal Caribbean. We didn't do any shore excursions and opted to just walk around and enjoy the area. There was a zip line, that I believe is one of (if not THE) largest over open water, but we couldn't justify their price for just one go at it. Reviews also mentioned it was a lengthy wait in line too. While I still think their (Royal Caribbean's) beach at Coco Cay in the Bahamas is my favorite cruise line beach, Labadee was still a pretty area and we enjoyed the day in the sand. Well this was the first weekend I didn't do any work at all! And much needed too because I've been here in Haiti for a month and haven't yet gone to the beach...poppycock. And being up here in Cap Haitian, the beach is much more accessible than in Port au Prince. I hopped on a moto and took a short ride over the hill, and voila! Paradise lays before me. I walked through the entrance of a hotel to the beach to plop myself down and was promptly informed I had to pay U.S. $5. Hello?! I'm cheap. So I walked down the beach to go hang with the local haitians, and as it so happened quite a large group of Chileans. They give me bread, cheese, beer, and chocolate - this sounds like a waaaaay ... read more

Well I'm here in Okap (Cap Haitian) for about 2 weeks, sent up from Port au Prince to help with the SOIL office finances and operations. Ashley, the new program manager, was supposed to come at least a week ago but has fallen ill and doesn't know when she'll be able to make it down from the U.S. Hence, I'm here and happy to change scenery for a little bit! I'm living on the roof of the office in a big room with a huge rooftop garden. There's a great view of the bay and the surrounding mountains. Okap is the 3rd largest city in Haiti, but very very different than Port au Prince. For one, it wasn't impacted by the earthquake so the infrastructure is intact and there are 4 story buildings here, paved streets, ... read more

Only a small portion of Haiti was open to us. We tried to walk down a roadway leading out of a shopping area but we were stopped by guards. The seven or so hours we had were more than enough time to explore the beach and wooded areas that were open to us and the many "shops" along the way. Most of the merchant areas were small huts side by side about 6 by 8 feet in size. One merchant called me into the shop and I realized that the hut was actually two shops ran by two different people. One on the left side of the hut and one on the right. The two merchants began a tug of war with my attention, both trying to persude me to buy from their "store." It was ... read more

Today I had time off until 12:45 but had immigration procedures all morning so I couldn't go out to Miami. At immigration we received a I 95 which is similar to a passport, we have to always have it with us when we get off at any US Port. I met my roommate today, she's very nice, comes from England. There were quite a lot of interesting guests on board this week. We were quite busy today, a Sea day is always much busier than a Port day, because the passangers have nowhere else to go that to stay on board the ship and make use of the facilities. I started feeling a little ill today and had an early night. When I woke up the next day I was sooo ill, I went to the ... read more

After our departure from Miami, we spent our first full cruise day underway. It was quite relaxing, getting acquainted with the ship that isn't a ship (it's more like a floating mall) and enjoying the good food and entertainment. We pointed toward our first port of call, Labadee, Haiti a.k.a. the Fake Town. C'est vrai? Yes, I said Fake Town... authenticized with a few native Hatians and what have you got? A cruise island town built specifically to rake in money. Haiti seems to instill a lot of fear into people, and I can say that it's with good reason. With a history rich in violence, it seems that people have much to fear as an outsider or an insider. Between uprisings, civil unrest and coups up until about a decade ago... well, you can google ... read more
