Background: The Maya civilization flourished in Guatemala and surrounding regions during the first millennium A.D. After almost three centuries as a Spanish colony, Guatemala won its independence in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments as well as a 36-year guerrilla war. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had left more than 100,000 people dead and had created some 1 million refugees.

Alright guys...sorry...I didn´t have the guts to get up and air guitar. I know...I let you all down and I´m sorry. I won´t miss another opportunity like that...promise! This week here has been great. I made some friends and learned some spanish from a great teacher (you can see their photos at the end). My spanish classes were one on one and I really got a lot out of it. She asked me what I wanted to learn and did the best to teach me it all. I definitely have increase my vocabulary a lot and know how to speak spanish [View Full Entry]

Today was a long and exhausting day. We all met up at the airport at midnight, sleepy but excited about our trip. I was worried about how Diego would fare on the airplane, but he knocked out before we hit the runway, and he didn´t wake up until we landed. Perfect! We landed in Guatemala City at 6:30am. Lydia, Max and Ivy made their way to Lydia´s cousin´s house and my mom, Fabi, Diego and myself made our way to my aunt´s house to have breakfast. And what a breakfast it was! As soon as we stepped off the chicken bus in Antigua, we knew we were going to love this little colonial city. The streets were buzzing with energy, and many of the local women were wondering around in traditional dress which just added even more charm to it. We head through the markets and into the centre to find the Jungle Party hostel, which again we loved instantly. It had a great atmosphere, with people lounging around watching films on the big tv, chill out music on in the backround, and everyone chatting about their trips and getting on really well. So, as you can probably guess, this bus trip was pretty epic. We decided to get the later bus which meant we had to stay a night in San Salvador, mainly because we really didn´t want to be wondering around the streets of Managua at the wee hours of the morning after meeting 3 different groups of people who had all been held up by guns and machetes there. So we squeezed onto a little colectivo at around 8am from Granada and head off with our fingers crossed that nothing bad would happen. LUCKILY... we managed to get through Managua with [View Full Entry]

Interesting experience getting to Antigua. I was going to share a taxi with Mimi (one of the Canadians staying at Teresa´s) but the taxi we called never came and we had to stop one on the street (this means he´s not reputable...no meters). We explain that he should drop me off anywhere on the street so I can catch the chicken bus on the way to the airport. I ask how much and he says 50Q ($4.50). The guy drops Mimi off she tells him I have the money, then he takes me to the Camionetta (chicken bus head quarters). I [View Full Entry]

Stranded on the side of the road with a broken motor, we sit down and wait. Eventually someone will come and hopefully tow us somewhere. A Quiché family that lived where we broke down, came to join us, the 18 year old daughter wanted to know all about us, and the two year old boy proudly showed us his Fischer Price Car that he pushed himself along the dirt road with. Later, one of the Mayan Family members brought us a hot chocolate, it tasted delicious and even if it was made with local water, we couldn't say no. www.vwworldtrip.co.cc [View Full Entry]

Having left ARCAS wildlife rescue centre after three weeks of volunteering, we took a lancha (a small and skinny wooden boat) to Flores where we unfortunately had to stay another night but left early morning to take a chicken bus to Rio Dulce, a quiet little town near Lake Izabal. The people were very friendly, the town quite small being centered on one main street and ¨the longest bridge in Central America¨spanning across the lake. We took a day trip to El Estor, also along the lake side, to a castle ¨Castillo de San Felipe¨ which had to have been build [View Full Entry]
