I MADE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I GOT OUT OF MEXICO!!!!!! Im goin back in a couple weeks though... 😉 However i made it through the border w no problems!!! i didnt even pay a fine!!!! i gave them the innocent me look and told the customs officers i had realized in mexico city the day before that my visa had expired (''im so sorry officer, i completely forgot about it...'') and called the french embassy and they said to get down to the border and just pay a fine. to my amazement in 15 minutes i had my exit stamps and i didnt even have to pay a cent!!!!! th setting was everything i expected and more... there's a river that divides mexico and guatemala (i crossed at a town called Talisman) and you have tyo cross a bridge to go fomr one to the other. the funny thing is i could have just waltzed on through, without getting my passports checked by anyone. in the immeadiate background there are huge mountains, and its bustling with people trying to change your money, sell you stuff, offerin cab rides, kids offering to take you to where you need to go (i did give a kid 10 pesos to take me around, makes it easier than walking around with no clue... ) etc. once i walked into guatemala, i found out the next bus to anywhere left at 15:00 (it was 12:00) so i had to take a cab to the nearest town (about an hour away) called Mazatlan. From Mazatlan i caught a bus to Cocales (which i assumed would be a town... nope, just a big ass crossroad) and when i got there was told there were no more buses for where i wanted to go, the town of Panajachel, on Lake Atitlan. some asshole cabdriver actuall told me there were no more buses to anywhere, and that he would take me for 400 quetzales (40 euros) which is a real ripoff. i ended up standing at this crossroad, with buses going by every other minute, quite a lot of people waiting around, and then finally got onto one fo those famous 'chicken buses' (the ol us chool bus, redecorated of course...) to Santiago Atitlan, which is actually closer to where i was trying to go. it took over an hour. at its fullest i was standing at the VERY end of the bus, pushed up against the door, w another 90 people in there (these buses are made to carry 48 kids...) a very interesting experience. got to santiago atitlan, whose idea of a good saturday night is watching the local kids play basketball -seriously-. uniforms and all!!! i ended up meeting this cool french girl called julie and we ended up having a couple drinks and talking abouit all sorts of existential stuff. turns out she lives in San Pedro and helped me get settled in. Im payin 3 euros a day to rent a bungalow w shower and bathroom. very basic of course but 3 euros!!!!!!!!!!!! ill write more when i get a feel for thius place, but i already like the vibe
love you all
