Bon Voyage
Look at all our stuff! Ah... San Pedro La Laguna resting on the shores of Lago de atitlan in the highlands of guatemala. ´´pan de banan, pan de coco, pan de chocolat...´´ these are the sounds of San Pedro. The women who carry these baskets of fresh bread on their heads are incredibly burly. It has been somewhat of an adventure getting here but at last we have made it to the land of the cheap. We began the trip about a week ago in guatemala city we arrived just in time for the country´s indapendance day celebration. The city was absoutly alive and a little intimidating, but with the help of a friend Senior Lopez and his son we were able to find some accomodations for the evening in the more run down part of town. Although, we quickly realized that we wanted to high-tail it out of G.City as fast as possible. So the Lopez´s graciously drove us to Antigua. We stayed in a great hostel, Yellow House, for 2 nights. Antigua was nice, colonial churches, beautiful surroundings, under the shadow of Volcan Agua, but there were too many people, especially other gringos. But we did meet some cool Brits that became good friends
Volcan Pacaya
New earth flowing behind us. fast. Together we hiked Vocan Pacaya, where we stood by molten lava flowing out of the earth. Then we ventured on to Panajachel via the mighty chicken buses. What a ride! People in the states would pay good money for a thrill like that. So, 5 buses later we arrived and were greeted by loads of women and children pushing their handcrafts on us. Again, Pana was nice but alot of tourists. Lago de Atitlan however was magnificent. A huge caldera with 5 volcanos surrounding. Then one stormy boat trip across the lake we landed in San Pedro. Here, life is slow, simple, and happy. Not to mention, oh so cheap. We´re spending $3.50 a night for both of us, view of the lake from our room. Volcanoes in all directions and I thought Seattle was green. This place is so lush and green, and for the rainy season it´s not bad at all. We´ve had rain everyday but it passes quickly and it´s still so warm. Glad I left that extra coat at home. We hav chosen a spanish school to attend for the next week, real cheap and very organized with lots of volunteer opportunities with children. Tomorrow
we will once again chance the chicken busses and take in the market in CHICHI, a town located further up in the highlands. So first week here, off to a great start. We promise to provide more entertaining stories next time ´round. Meanwhile, wish us luck, keep in touch, heernt! Love maresa and landon.
