Easter Monday morning five of us set of on our descanso (our week long monthly break), Pilar, Lara, Miguel, Javier and myself. We got the 10.30 bus from Rio Dulce to Flores in the north of Guatemala. The bus ride was my worst yet, we were standing for half of it, all squashed in like sardines in a can, gripping onto what ever you can to stay upright. After about 4 hours we arrived in Flores, a small town on an island in the middle of a lake. We booked into a recommended hostal for Q25 (about 2.50 euros), Doña Goya, nice, clean, and safe from what we seen. We headed out for lunch at the side of the lake and spent the day walking around the town and checking out the little shops. After a ... read more

I've just returned to Guatemala City from Tikal, which are the Mayan ruins about 350 kms. north of Antigua, in the region bordered by the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and the country of Belize. Had a wonderful Easter Sunday and Monday up there. Flew up there early Sat. morning on a prop plane and back tonight at 5 PM on the same one. As some of you may know, I don´t really like to fly, even in big planes, so I´m proud of myself that I did this, even though the flight back was bumpy and you couldn´t see anything because of the clouds. I have some great photos to post but can´t seem to do it on this computer at the airport guesthouse I´m spending the night at. Will try to do it tomorrow during ... read more

20th - 22nd February We left our Museum at 5am on Wednesday morning, we had a long day of travelling as Antigua was located at the south of Guatemala & we were heading to the Northern town of Flores not far from the Belizian border. So we drove through the whole country pretty much. We got to Flores in the late afternoon its a small town on a island in a middle of a lake, and we were told that its the only safe town to stay in this part of the counrty. We soon found a bar on the lake and ended up in the water pretty quick too! This night was the night of the lunar eclipse and we found another bar with a perfect view of the moon. However mother nature was not kind ... read more

Crossing Borders The Guatemalan border is just a short drive from San Ignacio, but getting across the border involved paying an exit tax for all of us and the car, getting the car sprayed with insecticide, paying for the spray, paying to get into Guatemala (both us and the car) and lastly paying to go across the bridge into Guatemala. It was about a 30 minute process with no signs anywhere. Some enterprising people were earning their money by leading us by the hand through the process (it was worth it to us because we didn’t have to stand in line at the cashier). John had to go from one counter to submit the papers, to another to pay and to another to pick up the paper along with the paid receipt. Thanks John. Once we ... read more

We caught the bus from Suchitoto back to San Salvador with a very nice bus driver who put our packs up at the front of the bus with him hanging onto mine every time we went round a corner to make sure it didn´t fall out of the open door! Overnight in a different hotel from before as it was next to the bus stop we had to be at by 5.30 the next morning - the first of a number of early mornings... The bus back to Guatemala City seemed a lot quicker than the other way and getting through the border certainly took less time. We 'd booked into a small hostal near the airport as we had an early flight the next morning which turned out to be the best place we could´ve ... read more

Despite wanting to stay longer in Belize and friendlt justice of the peace informed us that if we overstayed our car permit we may spend a few days in a cell. Hearing that news Barton and Brown waved goodbye to good new friends, Kim, Ruby, and Arnold, and took off for Guatemala. The border was painless and the road was very bumpy and dusty... but we happened to be driving a car that is fairly battle tested. We made it into Flores, and tiny island town on a lake in Northern Guatemala. We spent the night at a nice hostel and got drunk we a Swede and three German girls. MAking friends quickly we offered them all a ride in the morning to see the ruins. Our new friends fell in love with the ole Baru ... read more

Here we were on Day 12 of our GAP trip -Jan. 30th -all 16 of us were leaving our hotel and loading into the van at 4 a.m.!! We voted unanimously to forgo the opportunity to have a 12 hour bus ride from Antigua to Flores and instead upgraded to a plane. So off we went to Guatemala City -about 1 hour's drive -and arrived at the airport. Here we had to all have our luggage weighed because of the small plane- limit was 20 pounds for one bag - some of us had to pay for overweight backpacks -mine was 10 poundsover but Al's was right on 20 pounds. Off we flew and arrived in lovely Flores in northeastern Guatemala in El Peten region, at 8 a.m. and had the whole day to explore. Flores ... read more

Our GAP group opted for the "sunset tour" for Tikal. We left Flores about noon in 2 vans and it took about 1 hour to reach Tikal. Parque Nacional Tikal is huge and right in the jungle -350 sq. kms. containing thousands of separate structures. Our Tour Guide Miguel was amazing. He gave us rich descriptions of Mayans settling here around 700 BC and shared stories and personal insights into the Mayan ways. He was also an expert on the flora and the fauna. We learned whiich plants were good for medicinal uses. He spotted toucans for us -yes Elwyn we saw toucans just like on your postcard! And many other birds too -so beautiful. And we saw spider monkeys swinging and dancing form tree to tree! We listened for howler moneys but no luck seeing ... read more
