Our trip began with a flight from Miami to Belize City. We picked up our bags and made it out of customs fairly quickly. We got right in a cab and headed to the marine terminal to catch a bus to Flores, Guatemala. we should have gotten money from an ATM before we left the airport but the airport was so small we were outside and in a cab before we even thought to look for an ATM. at the marine terminal we bought bus tickets but we had two hours before it left so we took a cab tour of Belize city and had lunch from a local restaurant that looked like the back of someone's house. Nothing is open in Belize City on Sundays so we were lucky the cab driver knew where to get some food. Every restaurant we passed was closed. We did have to eat our meal on our laps though. We were able to pay for everything so far with US dollars but the cab driver took us by an ATM so we would have some Belize money to cross the boarder to Guatemala later. We went back to the marine terminal and picked up
our luggage from King James (thats what he told us to call him) who was holding it in his office while we went on our city tour. We got on the bus which was really more like a big van and rode two hours to the border. We were the only ones on the bus. At the border we got off the bus and went through the Belize customs which cost us $15 US each. It would have cost an additional $7.50 each if we had stayed in Belize for more then 24 hours. Once through we had to go into an open building and get a Guatemala stamp. Then we got back on the bus were the driver was recruiting more passengers and filled up half the bus. About 1hour and 45 minutes later we arrived in Santa Elena where we were transferred to a van to go to the island of Flores. The van stopped at an ATM so that we could get some quetzals (Guatemalan money) and off we went to Flores. We hadn't booked our hotel in advance so we asked them to take us to Hotel De La Isla to check out their rooms. The
room was ok so we booked it for two nights. What we really liked was that there was a pool. Did I mention it was over 100 degrees out today? We were both dripping with sweat all day long, yuck.
We walked around the corner from our hotel and got some drinks. Our vacation had finally started. After walking around almost the entire island we stopped to eat dinner. No one is in a rush here as it took two hours for us to eat. I had a fish dish that included the whole fish fried up which was really good. Dave wasn't sure what he had ordered but it came out as Pinchos (kabobs). More rum drinks and a few Gallo beers were drunk. Back at the hotel we took advantage of the pool it felt so good to cool off.
