Rope swing pool
I can only put a few pics on, as even though it works, this has taken over an hour! Beinvenido, ¿como esta?
i just wanted to use an upside down question mark :o)
well, i've been awake since about 4a.m. We had booked a sunrise tour to Tikal, but as with the other thing i wanted to see at Palenque, it didnt work out, the alarm didnt function as it should, so we missed it, and in the process blew 15$. A typically successful effort, and we cant go during the day as its sooooo hot, even the locals are sweating, and you just cant move, let lone clamber around on ruins, so we'll either have to come back or miss it.
I think i mentioned we were doing a tour.
it was the best hog darn day for ages, thanks to where we went and the lax attitude of the guides, Floyd and David. So funny, our guide started drinking after showing us around this amazing cave, Bartons creek, and then sat outside on a hammock and started to smoke the biggest joint ever, and thats serious, HUGE. the place was wicked as well, a remote jungle lodge with rope swings into the river, a herd of ridgeback dogs and puppues, and so tranqiul. Met a guy
The Jump
If you look closely towards the right, you can see my shorts. tis the best pic for size perspective. from Derby there too, hah.
So, back to David and his dope. After that, we knew it would be funny, and we just drove around in el rancho Bronco style in the pickup, singing to bob marley, of course, stopped off for some lunch (and off course, brandy) and headed to the best waterfalls i've been too, Big Rock Falls, nestled in a lush green steep river valley, close to where the former director Francis Ford Coppolla has a absurdly expensive retreat. Obviously inspired him to write there then!! Your meant to be able to swim under them, but Floyd and i both tried and didnt even get close, too powerful, and felt i might collapse my lung so had to stop. Then i was persuaded to prove a point to myself to clamber up 20+ foot of rocks, and then jump off into the pool below. And like an idiot,i did it twice. Hopefully the pics show it. Such an awesome feeling, who needs bungey huh! The view of a rainbow at the top was breathtaking, inspiring, and i felt so high, who needs anything else! Inspired.
we had such a laugh with those guys, and they gave
Lago de Yaxha
the bank of where eco sombrero was. darn those crocodillos though. a great impression of Belizians, who on the whole were nice people. great times in Belize.
Guatemala is a nice place so far, the people are cool, much nicer than the miserable souls in Mexico; maybe if they smiled once in a while they'd stop having wars, but thats there issue i guess!
Flores is a tiny outcrop connected to the mainland in the lake, warm water, and you can walk around it in about 10 minutes, and it is pretty cute, so glad we chose here over the other place we were going to stay, el remate.
We crossed the border with the usual bribe to the guy, about a $, so paid for a drink for him! from there, we got on a collectivo taxi to a place called Manquin, which is just really a cafe, and waited for our pick up to go to the eco sombrero, a little place in the jungle, lakeside, to relax for a few nights after the bustle of San Ignacio. We got there alright, and it was a nice enough place, lovely setting, but you couldnt cool off in the lake as Crocodillos own it, and testament to
Crocodillo
Here's one Nick caught earlier... that were two skulls taking pride of place...i wanted to go and wrestle one to make it three, but i was tired after dinner....
Leaving there was a nightmare, it was all done on a tab system, and they didnt take visa, and despite taking money with us, we obviously didnt have enough, but they were nice about it and gave us an address to drop the remainder off in Flores, but guess what, they had no idea what we wqere on about, so we're still trying to contact them for a postal address (best question so far from Tracey..do they have post here...i nearly laughed,... but then thought, i dunno!) We did manage to catch a sunset from atop the main Yaxha temple though, think it was about 50ft high, peeking above the canopy over our lake, so it sort of makes up for Tikal. The howler monkeys were funny there as well, they dont so much howl, as grown like zombies, and i hate zombies! our lodge had a family with two babies though, so they were cute. So far my nature list is as follows. Monnkeys, dolphins, toucans, humming birds and iguana's, oh and too many
Yaxha
We climbed this to watch the sunset and watch the monkeys. f*llipping dogs to count!
oh and yesterday i had my first hangover in three weeks on Brahva, a local beer. i have never in my life felt worse, and that includes staying up to watch Lewis Tyson till 5 and drinking whiskey, it was funky stuff!
So from here, its off on a big bus journey with an American (Boston) couple we've met, Adrian and Jodi, to a place in the south called Semuc Chempey for some river tubing, cave exploring, wallowing, and hopefully it will be below 35 degrees so i can remove this water bottle from my mouth...
Then its to the whole point of coming here, a few days wakeboarding on a warm water lake, sooooo excited!
