This morning we left paradise, aka Hotel Catamaran, for Flores. After one stretch break and the fruit fly search upon entering Peten department, we reached the little island of Flores. Flores is connected to the mainland by a causeway and has about 2,000 people, most of which probably work for one of the hotels, restaurants, or souvenir shops. A very quaint, laid-back town. After settling in to Hotel Sabana, Lisa gave us a short guided walk around the town, showing us the best restaurants and where we'd find an ATM. After calling home, we checked out some of the souvenir shops and then had lunch at Capitan Tortuga. Manoli had a fruit salad that was awesome. Several types of fresh fruit artisitically cut and arranged to look like 2 fish! I had a plate of gringas de pollo (sort of like our chicken quesadillas) that were delicious. With 2 cafe con leches and water, it came to about 100Quetzals or $13.00. We returned to the room after visiting some more souvenir shops and decided to take a dip in the hotel pool and relax until dinner. We strolled along the lakeside street (most of them are lakeside) until we found

what appeared to be a decent restaurant frequented by locals, El Toucan Restaurant. We shared an order of guacamole and chips, and the house special which was a taco, an enchilada, beef filet, sausage, rice and black beans. Everything was very good, except the chips which were a bit hard-thick. With a banana smoothie (licuado) and water, it came to 90 Quezals (about 12.50). Since we had to leave for Tikal at 6am, we returned to the hotel.

Welcome to Flores
Hotel Sabana is a wonderful place. Our friend Nancy, a guide for a CA Travel Operator, takes her groups there all the time. Our kids love to visit her when she is here and play in the pool at Sabana. If you like, stop by our humble little backpacker hostel while you are here and say Hi - we have a free gift for you. Welcome to Flores!
