Background: The Maya civilization flourished in Guatemala and surrounding regions during the first millennium A.D. After almost three centuries as a Spanish colony, Guatemala won its independence in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments as well as a 36-year guerrilla war. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had left more than 100,000 people dead and had created some 1 million refugees.

This morning, we were all up at the crack of dawn, eager to leave the hotel. We ¨showered¨ with antibacterial wipes and left our Happy Home, not without taking a group photo as a momento in front of it. Halfway back to the city, we stopped in Tecpan to get some breakfast at Katok and continue the laughter from the night before. Then, we dropped Lydia and company off, and went home to shower!!!! Later on, we took a trip to the Mercado Central (downtown market) to do some last minute shopping. I didn´t take my camera, as downtown Guatemala isn´t [View Full Entry]

I took this snapshot by pointing my camera behind me. Love the expression on Ivy´s face.

Getting some breakfast at Katok.

We got our wake-up call at 5am and decided to skip breakfast at the hotel and take a gander at the island of Flores, located right across the lake from us. We only had 20 minutes to take a peek, but it sufficed. Then it was off to the airport and eventually we made it back to Guatemala City at 9am. Lydia and company hung out with her family, and Fabi and I hung out with my family. We rested a bit, and then made our way to the cemetery to visit my grandmother (my mother´s mom) and my great aunt [View Full Entry]

Fabi and I in Flores.
Us and Noemy at the airport.
Our plane in El Peten.

Sore. Very sore. That´s how Fabi and I woke up today from yesterday´s Pacaya climb. The kind of sore where it hurts to walk up or down stairs. The kind of sore where your body hurts in places you never knew could hurt. Fabi kept saying even her organs hurt. Needless to say, it was a good thing we decided to have today be an off day - a day to just stay home and chill and enjoy family time. And eat. A lot, I may add. Lydia, Max and Ivy hung out with Lydia´s family. My cousins made pepián today, [View Full Entry]

So, as you can probably guess, this bus trip was pretty epic. We decided to get the later bus which meant we had to stay a night in San Salvador, mainly because we really didn´t want to be wondering around the streets of Managua at the wee hours of the morning after meeting 3 different groups of people who had all been held up by guns and machetes there. So we squeezed onto a little colectivo at around 8am from Granada and head off with our fingers crossed that nothing bad would happen. LUCKILY... we managed to get through Managua with [View Full Entry]

It was a few hour bus ride from San Salvador to Guata (as the locals call it). Toby had recommended we take one of the express buses, and we went with a company that had departures every hour and a half. He had mentioned that the other buses 'Take forever'. For Toby to take the more expensive option, the cheaper one must be really bad. I had heard that Guata was not he safest city in the region, so I booked us into a more expensive lodging option, $18 for the room @ the Hotel Colonial . It had nice ambiance, [View Full Entry]

Hey everbody, How's it going? Well things are going well here. I spend my days working and being daddy. Being a dad is the greatest thing I have ever had the pleasure of doing. I love it! I change diapers, play with Sofia, and talk to her. I do everything but breast feed her. She is so pleasant to be around. I have never seen a baby smile and laugh more than Sofia. She is awesome. I also got promoted. I am now a fulltime trainer earning a salary. I get paid vacation time, and all the bonuses that Guatemalans get. [View Full Entry]

Sofia and Daddy

My girlfriend, Susan and I, are off on another adventure. Several years ago, we went to Honduras and thought it was about time to do another adventure. We are returning again to Central America, arriving in Guatamala City and leaving from Managua in about two weeks. Other than that, we have no plans other than to get from one place to the other without getting ourselves thrown in jail! I always thought Susan was pretty steamy, but this night, when we landed in Guatamala City, I found out how hot she really is! Literally! Coming through customs, she was so hot [View Full Entry]
