Background: The Maya civilization flourished in Guatemala and surrounding regions during the first millennium A.D. After almost three centuries as a Spanish colony, Guatemala won its independence in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments as well as a 36-year guerrilla war. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had left more than 100,000 people dead and had created some 1 million refugees.

BE SURE TO VIEW THE EXTRA PHOTOS ON THE BOTTOM OF THIS TEXT!! ************************************************ Today we woke up at 4am and by 5am we were out the door to pick up Lydia, Max and Ivy and head out to the airport. We arrived at the airport at 6:05am for our 6:30am domestic flight to Tikal. Much to our surprise, we were told that we couldn´t board the plane because they had closed the doors at 5:55am. We missed our flight by 10 minutes. Not a great start. After pondering our options, we were put on the 10am flight, so we had [View Full Entry]

We took a shuttle from Antigua to Guatemala City, then a ten hour bus to Flores, in the El Peten region of Guatemala. Flores is often used as a base to visit the Tikal ruins. It is a sleepy little lake island with a bridge to the mainland; we can walk all the way around the island in about 15 minutes. We booked a tour to Tikal leaving at 4am, since we have a better chance of seeing animals in the early morning, and less of a chance of too many other tourists. Our tour guide at Tikal was amazing. The Mirador Basin is an area of pristine tropical forest geographically defined on the west, south and east by a low range of karstic mountains and bordered on the north by the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Mexico. The Mirador Basin covers 2,169 square kilometers, about four times the area of Tikal National Park and a little less than the area of Rhode Island. The Mirador Basin is located in the extreme north central portion of the Peten of Guatemala, and extreme southern Campeche, Mexico. The Basin is noted for the complete lack of human population in the area, plus the fact [View Full Entry]

Aguateca, El Peten, Guatemala
Wednesday, January 21st we drove north to the Peten, which is the largest, most visited, and least populated department (similar to a state) in all of Guatemala. Our first stop was the archaeological site of Ixcun, accessed through the town of Dolores. The town has a small museum featuring a collection of pre-Hispanic artifacts from the region. Admission was minimal. To get to Ixcun, one must drive about 18 kilometers out of town along a dirt road passing cattle farms and country homes. There are no restored structures at Ixcun; all of the remains were in complete ruin except a [View Full Entry]

What happened to the Maya...People chose not to see them! If you open your eyes you will see they are here, in fact have been all along!
Tikal is a national park and pre-Hispanic Mayan ruin site in the northern Guatemalan department of El Peten. The park and ruin site is easily accessible by private vehicle, bus or tour group from cities throughout Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. Upon entering the park, vehicles must register at the entrance gate. Within the park there are three hotels and a camping area with bathrooms, wash area and cold showers. Camping was about $4 USD per person per night. Electricity (limited to the hotels, restaurants and shops) is only on within the park from about 5:30 until 9pm. At night at [View Full Entry]
