Background: The Maya civilization flourished in Guatemala and surrounding regions during the first millennium A.D. After almost three centuries as a Spanish colony, Guatemala won its independence in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments as well as a 36-year guerrilla war. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had left more than 100,000 people dead and had created some 1 million refugees.

Hey everyone, I have not used the internet much recently because right now I'm in Belize and it's really expensive so I have been avoiding the computer, but I decided I needed to try and catch up a little since my last blog left me in limbo. (I started this blog awhile ago and just finished it so the timing is funny) First off, I went to check out volunteering in Guatemala and all of the places required that you pay them to volunteer, which makes no sense to me to pay to work, so I put that on hold for [View Full Entry]

Well, out of everything I have done here, this is the most extreme. We have just been caving, which involved actually swimming through fast moving water deep inside a network of caves, by candle-light. Check out the pics [View Full Entry]

Holy cow. This weekend has been amazing. For a few weeks now the girls and I have been planning to go to Semuc Champey for a nice weekend of swimming and spelunking...we took Friday and Monday off of work, so we were able to use those as travel time since it takes about a full day to go one way. (Guate public transportation through the mountains...go figure, lol) Thursday night after work I went out with Nick and some friends for some drinks, and it was really funny because that night Nick randomly decided to come along with us for the [View Full Entry]

We head to the Biotopo del Quetzal an area of cloudforest where the national bird of Guatemala, the Quetzal, is supposed to live. It's damp with mist and very refreshing out of the sun No luck seeing the Quetzals though. We then start the long journey back to Antigua, tired but having had a really good weekend. The hills here are formed from limestone so there's a mass of underground cave systems in the area. We're heading to the Cahabon caves. Silly me thought it would be a nice little walk through a large cave system where we could easily spend time looking at the stone formations, but no, it's much more exhilarating than that. A few bats are disturbed by our entrance and swoop out of the way. Armed only with candles we plunge on, and plunge is the right word. The heavy rains have come early to Guatemala this year and so the caves have much [View Full Entry]

Road travel - Guatemalan style
School finished at 1200. I'm ready for a break. After a week of intensive studying my brain feels like it's reached saturation point so I'm looking forward to a weekend away in Semuc Champey. There are four of us going together from the school; Kiyomi (a 25 year old teacher from California), Eric (a 37 year old American GP living in London) and Rob (a 23 year old medical student from Canada). Our driver is called Adolfo. Semuc Champey is known as the green heart of Guatemala and it's a beautiful place. We drive along roads which seem to drop way [View Full Entry]

We tossed a coin to decide to go to Flores and Tikal the unmissable via either Rio Dulce, near the Carribean coast, or Coban in the sweaty centre of the country. Coban and won, and ´scuse my slightly dated language, but "boy was it a winner"! Well not Coban as such, it is a dive, got a nice hostel and a sweet resteraunt, but otherwise rammed with people gathering for what appeared to be the biggest running race event in Guatemala. But people don´t come to Coban for Coban. Nearby is a truly awesome waterfall that comprises a set of crystal [View Full Entry]
