November 25, 2008 Guatemala City, Guatemala, Central America I arrived in Guatemala City on Sunday, November 23rd and spent a couple of nights relaxing. Tuesday morning I went to the National Museum of Arqueology and Ethnology in Guatemala City. There are many original artefacts here from the ancient Mayan cities of Guatemala. The museum is in the Zone of the city that is close to the airport and the zoo. I visited the zoo as well today. In all my time in Guatemala, I had not ever visited either of these places. The zoo is quite nice. The museum is really impressive. I am sure that most of you, as my readers are tired of hearing about the Mayan peoples. For me, however, it is quite fascinating. I will upload a few pics of the artefacts ... read more

I arrrived here in Guatemala City around lunchtime on Wednesday. There is so much more traffic here in the city than I had remembered. I secured my transportation option to begin my travels the following morning to Copan Ruinas, Honduras. I will close this entry becuase there really isn't much to tell. ... read more

My Guatemala arrival was an easy transition. I was a little concerned that I wouldn’t get my backpack, but all turned out well. I remember walking out of the airport through the sliding doors and plainly seeing a welcoming audience that stood at the tip of their toes ready to greet their loved ones. I first recognized my uncle Jaime but he didn’t recognize me as I waved at him with joy. He said I was taller than what he expected. He last saw me when I was 10 years old. It was my grandmother from poppa’s side who I hadn’t seen in over a decade that ran towards me and gave me a big hug and kiss. I don’t know how she knew it was me. Maybe she saw her son in me because they ... read more

I am sorry it took so long but I am finally getting our trip to Guatemala to all of you. Needless to say we all had a fantastic trip! It was wonderful to see Ame after 7 months...the longest we have gone without seeing her. We drove up to Kay and Kevin's the evening of July 31, so we could be on time for our 7:10 am flight August 1 out of Regan National airport. It was Kaeli and Michael's first plane ride and the first one Danny would remember. Michael enjoyed hearing the "jet turbine engines accelerating". We had a one hour lay over in Miami/Fort Lauderdale before heading to Guatemala City. Both flights were uneventful except for the fact that we had signed up ahead of time and paid extra to pick our seats ... read more

Hey Friends and Fam, Last time i posted my blog, i thought that my next one would be about a vacation of some sort, where i went and traveled to another country for some time off. However, i hit some road blocks and made me delay doing that for a bit. A few weeks ago i had some pretty bad stomach pains. I hoped they would just go away, partly because i was afraid to go to the doctor in a foreign country, and partly because i refused to admit i had gotten sick. But after 10 sleepless nights with this pain i finally decided i couldn't take it anymore and asked Steve to refer me to a local doctor with a good reputation. Once i got to the clinic i was in so much pain, ... read more

What’s on the Chicken Bus? ME! So your probably thinking….What’s on a Chicken Bus?….and why I am riding it? The name “Chicken Bus” is very misleading. You would think these are busses taking chickens to the Chicken factory. But in reality, these busses are taking us to work! Chicken busses are renovated school busses that have been painted red and have many eccentric designs, patterns, paintings, and advertisements on them. They zip through the busy streets of Guatemala City at extremely dangerous speeds, and on your first ride, you’ll find yourself praying to God….”Please let me make it to work safely.” The reason they’re called Chicken buses is because we’re all packed together stumbling all over each other like chickens heading the Chicken factory. Once the seats are filled, we then stand up in the ... read more

Girls just wanna have fun One thing I’ve noticed, is that everyone (or just about everyone) in Guatemala City loves American music. Now when I say “American music,” of course you automatically think modern Pop. But they love all forms of American music, including songs from past decades. There is one song in particular that Guatemalans seem to love, and you would never guess which song it is…….Girls Just Wanna have Fun! Surprisingly, the people here love that 1980s hit by Cindy Lauper. When I was waiting on my taxi driver one evening, standing in front of the mall in zone 10, there was a young man parked in front of the mall waiting for someone. So he was sitting in his car getting inpatient, until he turned on his car and started blasting that song! ... read more

Today we visited Excuela Marista, the Marist School in Zone 6 of Guatemala City. Students from Kindergarten to Year 9 attend this school. Most of the students move on to Technical schools after completing Year 9. Escuela Marista is located in the poorer part of Guatemala City. In 1991 the then Principal of the School, Br Moises Rodriguez was tragically stabbed to death in his Principal´s office. Over previous years he had been speaking out against injustices in society and he paid the ultimate price. I found it inspirational to be able to visit this Principal´s office and meet the current principal Br Rodrigo Cuesta. He showed me the side room to which Br Moises´assassin dragged his victim´s body after stabbing him. Br Moises remains an inspiration to Marists in Central America and beyond.... read more

During our Champagnat Pilgrimage in 2010, while in Guatemala City, we will be staying at the Marist Retreat Centre located adjacent to the Province Centre and the Senior Brothers´Building. The local Salesian Parish Church is in the same street. While there are two beds in most rooms there are enough rooms for each pilgrim to have a room each.... read more
