Background: The Maya civilization flourished in Guatemala and surrounding regions during the first millennium A.D. After almost three centuries as a Spanish colony, Guatemala won its independence in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments as well as a 36-year guerrilla war. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had left more than 100,000 people dead and had created some 1 million refugees.

Here's a picture of the valley that we woke up to at the Earth Lodge. To the left is Volcan Agua, which we are not allowed to climb due to the "bandidos" surrounding the mountain.
After leaving Antigua last Friday afternoon, we rode in the back of a pickup truck up to a place called the Earth Lodge, near a town called El Hato, on the outskirts of Antigua. The place was started up by a Canadian named Drew and an American named Brianna 6 years ago, and has gorgeous views of the surrounding valleys and city of Antigua. On our second day there, we hiked for a couple of hours out into the surrounding hills, and saw some amazing scenery- for miles in all directions, the villagers have planted corn fields, and the trails which [View Full Entry]

In the Guatemalan forest
Corn fields
Another lush valley

Hola! Not much of an entry I'm afraid, mainly for the reason that I'm yet to actually do very much. After a shockingly bad flight (Iberia don't think it's necessary to give you televisions for 11 hour flights) I got into Antigua, Guatemala about 6pm on Monday evening. They must have known I was coming, because I was greeted with fireworks, and other forms of celebration. Bizarrely, the only thing they'd forgotten was the "Welcome to Guatemala Stewart" banner. Some would say that this is because they were not actually celebrating my arrival, but were celebrating Guatemalan independence [View Full Entry]

Volcan Agua
Volcan Agua
Outside of Antigua, Agua dominates the landscape through the clouds.
We´ve spent the last three days in Antigua, and I feel as if I´ve had my fill. The city is beautiful, and very easy to get aquainted with; three volcanoes surround the city, and in the morning the weather has been cloud-free so the sights of these have been awesome. Our first night, we stayed at a place called the Jungle Party Hostel, which was interesting; Thursdays are "ladie´s nights," but since there weren´t many ladies around, they gave the guys drink specials if we agreed to put on dresses. It was an interesting way to unwind after a long journey [View Full Entry]

Meme s [View Full Entry]

Ready to go
Ready to go
My last couple of hours in the states. Just look at that smile...
Here we go: 8 hours from now, I'll be leaving the country for Guatemala City and then...who knows? Our tentative plan is to move through all of Central America and then fly to Buenos Aires for Christmas and New Year's. From there, we'll head to Patagonia and then up the west coast of South America to Peru and Bolivia. To all of my friends and family back home: thanks a lot for your love and support! See you soon! eau claire a droite, pierre speciale pour laver le linge a gauche

almost two months since the last blog...so we have definitely slacked off, but then again living in antigua has caused us to settle a little more than planned, which is why i am happy to say that lindsie and i are leaving by the end of september....woohoo. until then we have to buckle down and work as much as the bar can have us...but enough of that... the time here goes quickly some days, and others we feel like we have been here for an interminable amount of time. the town is still beautiful, we have started to run out of [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]
