Background: El Salvador achieved independence from Spain in 1821 and from the Central American Federation in 1839. A 12-year civil war, which cost about 75,000 lives, was brought to a close in 1992 when the government and leftist rebels signed a treaty that provided for military and political reforms.

San Miguel We arrived in San Miguel, El Salvador on the 10th of October after about 12 hours of travel on a variety of buses and a taxi cab. We have been taking buses as often as possible because they are so affordable, so his taxi ride was unexpected. We were on a bus ready to ride to the Nicaraguan/Honduran border when the bus driver told everybody to get off the bus, there weren't enough passengers to make the trip profitable. So we got off the bus and jumped into a cab. Riding in the cab was the driver, four people [View Full Entry]

We managed to leave Antigua almost on time, which for various reasons seemed a long shot. I´ll say no more than that Antigua can be a rough town on a guy like me, all the more so on a night when Tequila fell from the sky. The most of ride to the border was fast and beautiful, winding between volcanos and ranchland. The only exception was Esquintla. As soon as we hit the town I stopped to ask directions because we were told we wouldn´t have to go through it. Before I could flip up my visor or find someone to [View Full Entry]

Well hello everyone, my apologies for the lack of input as of lately. It has been a time of change and travel. This is the first correspondence that I, Roguer have made. The last you heard of snowball, the hippy hauler we were awaiting the arrival of mom and dad Kehler. We had a fantastic time with them and I think they had a pretty good time hanging out with Anja. During this time we also developed some truck problems. We unfortunately used some bad oil and also received some bad diesel, thus causing some large issues with the injector pump [View Full Entry]

No Machetes We crossed from Guatemala into La Hachadura at probably one of the most pleasant border crossing we had done. The staff was friendly, it didn’t take much time (well relatively) and it didn’t cost anything. We were on the Carretera Littoral which runs along the Pacific Coast. Neither of us were sure why but driving along we both immediately liked El Slavador. Perhaps it was the weather and the Pacific Coast. Or perhaps it was that the people walking down the highway didn’t walk with machetes and there didn’t seem to be quite so many guns as Guatem [View Full Entry]

27th - 29th November It was a long old day of chicken bus after chicken bus to get us from Guatamala to El Salvador, but rewarding none the less. A bus to Guatamala City, a taxi to the main station, a bus to just past the border, a collectivo mini bus to another bus station, a bus along the 'Ruta de las Flores' (a slight detour and completely lacking in any evidence of the beautiful flowers it is famed for), another bus and 11 hours later... we arrived at Playa El Tunco. Playa El Tunco is famed for its 'great breaks' [View Full Entry]

Sunday was our last day in El Salvador. Tim, Katie and I were the first to hit the road at 4 a.m. We were up and ready to go by 3:15, but should have known that meant 4 a.m. El Salvador time! ;) Luckily, our travel day was uneventful. The three of us fly to Houston, then Detroit together. We split up around 6:30 when Tim and I had to head for our gate and flight back to Appleton. We landed safely and were on our way home by 8 with our families. Katie was due in Minneapolis around 11 p.m. [View Full Entry]

We arrived at the Pacific Ocean last night before dinner. It’s pure paradise here. This morning, we strolled the empty beach and collected sand dollars. We enjoyed time together relaxing on the beach and the pool. Each of us stretched our boundaries, growing as individuals and as a cohesive team during our time in El Salvador. What an idyllic way to end our journey. [View Full Entry]

Hello again. As the title of this here entry suggests, I decided that being as I´m in a country where surfing is pretty much the main tourist attraction, I´d give it a try. It might have given you a false impression of my ability though. Sorry about that, but I´ll get there in a bit. I did a bit more in El Salvador before I got to the beach, and I like to tell you about things in a nice chronological order.
