Background: El Salvador achieved independence from Spain in 1821 and from the Central American Federation in 1839. A 12-year civil war, which cost about 75,000 lives, was brought to a close in 1992 when the government and leftist rebels signed a treaty that provided for military and political reforms.

Hola todos! After a 3 hour delay in London, a 10 hour flight of relentless turbulance and an extremely tight layover in the US (I literally had to sprint across Houston airport!) I finally arrived in El Salvador last Thursday. As soon as I walked out of the airport doors I noticed the heat, the sounds and the smells so familiar of this endearing country. I was then reunited with Jesus and we travelled back to El Zonte, the costal village where he lives. I have just been relaxing this week, spending time with Jesus' family while he has been going [View Full Entry]

Bout chuffin´ time too i say! Kelly Slater i am not, but boo ya, it was awesome and i cant wait for doing it everyday for a few months, even though i did solve rising sea level problems by drinking most of the Pacific... The real reason for leaving Nica was that i couldnt eat any more Chicken Subways, too much of a good think is a bad thing. Was gutted it didnt work out down there, and i wondered what i had done so wrong to get so much bad karma at the same time, it must be something i [View Full Entry]

A tough day, ad-hoc travelling.... Up at 6 and just time for a street breakfast before the 7am bus to Retalhuleu, we are only guessing this is the place to go and change bus, seems right on the map... We arrive about 9 and are quickly helped onto another bus to Escuintla at 9.30. The progress is great! The second bus is quite luxurious as it has real seats and not American school bus style where they cram as many people as possible per bench. We are just relaxing into our seats, and realise we are lucky to be girls. A [View Full Entry]

Jay is here!

mmm

My crazy family subscribes to the notion that salt water heals all, so naturally I headed directly for the ocean and stayed for a week. El Salvador’s coastlines certainly don’t receive the hype, which Costa Rica’s coasts do, so you get to a ponte like El Zonte and it’s just the fisherman, their families, the ocean, and you! Falling asleep (with only 4 walls separating you from the ocean) to the crashing of waves on the shoreline of your front yard, under a sky glowing with stars, and then bathing in the ocean with the rise of the sun every morning- [View Full Entry]
