Background: El Salvador achieved independence from Spain in 1821 and from the Central American Federation in 1839. A 12-year civil war, which cost about 75,000 lives, was brought to a close in 1992 when the government and leftist rebels signed a treaty that provided for military and political reforms.

After taking a boat and about 3 buses we arrived at the Salvador border. We did not have a map or any clue where to go in this country but only word from a guy working at the hostel that El Zonte was a great place to surf. Luckily we met 2 Agentinans, Hernán and Mariano, and a Canadian girl traveling with them. They are amazing, selling hand made bracelets to fund their travels. We didnt realize how much better it is traveling with people who can speak spanish so well! After our third bus in Salvador the bus driver said [View Full Entry]

Okay, so I´m not really in el salvador anymore, but I was this morning, and I was tired of putting the exact same location every time. So I think all of my frusterations from last week are gone. I still get really overwhelmed sometimes, but I was typing up my proposal and I realized that I already have achieved a lot of the goals I came with- I just still have a lot left to do. I can´t believe I only have two weeks left. I am kind of at a loss of where to go after this. When will I [View Full Entry]

Getting to El Zonte, one of the best beaches in El Salvador to go surfing was a challenge, from Juayua we have to get off at Sonsonate then a bus to Santa Tecla, then La Libertad then to El Zonte. Good thing transport here is quite cheap and the roads in this country are well paved and so quite good. The waiting for chicken buses to show up really tests your patience though. Arriving in El Zonte we found Esencia Nativa, we promised Thor the Dane to meet him up there, Alex the owner right away welcomed us in and he [View Full Entry]

Dear all, It's been a long time! These last two months have been full of hard work, success and laughter and I wish I could do it all over again. The English Summer School was a great success and last week at the Angeles Descalzos Christmas Party the infamous recorder group impressed us all with their renditions of Jingle Bells and Rudolph! I am really amazed at how much they have learned in just over two months, many of them are so talented. In January we are going to take the children on another Campamento where I am going to work [View Full Entry]

I got an early chicken bus from Lake Atitlan in Guatemala to Guatemala City and shared a taxi to get to the bus terminal in zone 4. Guatemala City, like all the other capitals in Central America has a bad reputation but I late Sunday morning is probably the best time to visit. Just had an hour walking around before my bus went to San Salvador. Arrived in San Salvador around 4pm and the place was quite deserted. Got a hotel room in a recommended cheap hotel ($10-night). Had cardboard stuck to the walls and ceiling and this turned out to [View Full Entry]

Hola todos! After a 3 hour delay in London, a 10 hour flight of relentless turbulance and an extremely tight layover in the US (I literally had to sprint across Houston airport!) I finally arrived in El Salvador last Thursday. As soon as I walked out of the airport doors I noticed the heat, the sounds and the smells so familiar of this endearing country. I was then reunited with Jesus and we travelled back to El Zonte, the costal village where he lives. I have just been relaxing this week, spending time with Jesus' family while he has been going [View Full Entry]

Bout chuffin´ time too i say! Kelly Slater i am not, but boo ya, it was awesome and i cant wait for doing it everyday for a few months, even though i did solve rising sea level problems by drinking most of the Pacific... The real reason for leaving Nica was that i couldnt eat any more Chicken Subways, too much of a good think is a bad thing. Was gutted it didnt work out down there, and i wondered what i had done so wrong to get so much bad karma at the same time, it must be something i [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]
