Background: Explored and claimed by Columbus on his first voyage in 1492, the island of Hispaniola became a springboard for Spanish conquest of the Caribbean and the American mainland. In 1697, Spain recognized French dominion over the western third of the island, which in 1804 became Haiti. The remainder of the island, by then known as Santo Domingo, sought to gain its own independence in 1821, but was conquered and ruled by the Haitians for 22 years; it finally attained independence as the Dominican Republic in 1844. In 1861, the Dominicans voluntarily returned to the Spanish Empire, but two years later they launched a war that restored independence in 1865. A legacy of unsettled, mostly non-representative, rule for much of its subsequent history was brought to an end in 1966 when Joaquin BALAGUER became president. He maintained a tight grip on power for most of the next 30 years when international reaction to flawed elections forced him to curtail his term in 1996. Since then, regular competitive elections have been held in which opposition candidates have won the presidency. The Dominican economy has had one of the fastest growth rates in the hemisphere over the past decade.

We spent 5 sunny days in Maimon, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. We stayed at the Riu Complex where the service was wonderful. The staff is incredibly happy and friendly. Most of our days were spent on the beach. We only did 2 excersions. Horseback riding and a city tour. The city tour consisted of a cable car ride, trip to the amber museum, trip to the amber/larimar factory, cigar factory, rum factory, fort of san fillippe and city of San Fillippe (Puerto Plata). The tour was nice but there isn't much to see in the city. The shopping was awful. I [View Full Entry]

Just arrived from Caribbean adventure!!! We stayed at Hacienda Resort Villa Del Mar. What a fabulous experience we had. When we arrived we were greeted with warm welcome. Our first night there was a small welcome party for guest of the VIP world. Fortunately we had booked VIP members with www.manavilla.lv, otherwise as non-members we would not have had the privilege of enjoying the added Amenities of VIP World. Lifestyles offers several different restaurants for dinner, they range from Mexican to American Buffet, to a private restaurant in the VIP world with white glove service. Excellent food [View Full Entry]

Good morning all. Up early today. Was amazed i was actually able to settle in and get a couple hours sleep last night but I did. Up at 3, on the road just after 4. It was extremely foggy for about half the trip to calgary. Not fun at all. Roads seemed ok though and I didn't have any troubles But I made it to the park n jet by 6 and into the airport. Busy at security but I didn't have any problems Now just sitting at the gate waiting to board. Plane just pulled in so hopefully everything is [View Full Entry]

I settled into my daily routine at the hotel and at the church rapidly. At the hotel I translated anything the owners needed. As I like to keep busy I also gave myself the task of cleaning the former restaurant kitchen, and helping the cleaning lady to heighten the standard of the cleanliness of the rooms. As there is not much to see at all in Sosua, apart from the lovely beach, I kept myself busy and useful (well I think I was being useful at least ;) ) I would try to go to the church in the mornings [View Full Entry]

I awoke to Sosuá. A little but very busy town. I have to say it almost resembles to the Canary Islands, just with less cheap girls but there again more “chicas” who charge for sex. There are bars and clubs everywhere, and girls on every corner. The corners the girls don’t inhabit are occupied by men who carry wads of money and shout out change to anyone who passes by. I wondered around trying to find out where I was and where I could go as I had heard they had some great beaches here. I wondered down the “strip” and [View Full Entry]
