It has been one week since I've returned from the Dominican Republic. It was with great longing and sadness that I so recently returned to normal life. Two weeks ago, six students, two adult leaders, and I set out on a mission trip to bring fresh water to the town of "El Puerto." I've never gone on a mission trip before. In fact, I've always been wary of the idea of evangelism. In the past, the word "missionary" would conjure up notions of conquistadores, cultural oppression, and religious intolerance. However, as I’ve grown in my faith, I’ve realized the value of sharing, service, and cultural exchange central to journey I was called to undertake. Last time we communicated with you we had just arrived in Luperon in the Dominican Republic. As you may be aware this is a very large island made up of very impressive mountains. It has had a very interesting history that the United States has been very involved in. Both Janice and I feel like this is our first truly foreign port of call. Up to this point all the countries we visited English was the common spoken language and European culture mostly prevailed. DR, as it is commonly referred to around here is a lush tropical island with abundant rainfall and productive agricultural and industrial development. Having been to Carnaval in La Vega Dominican Republic 2 times in 2002 and 2003, I decided to once again visit La Vega, but to also travel to Bonao to check out and video tape the Carnaval celebration in Bonao.Carnaval 2005 Bonao Video Clip I traveled to Bonao on a bus or as dominicans call it a "gua gua". I arrived in Bonao rather early and decided to walk around a bit. There was not much happening so I headed to Hotel Aquarius and had lunch. The lunch was pretty good and reasonably priced. I had pork chops with white rice and fries plus a frozen lemonade or two. Hotel Aquarius seemed very nice. Certainly the nicest hotel in Bonao.
