If you want a real history lesson, Santiago de Cuba is definitely the place to visit. Our tour leader Natalia (who bears a striking resemblance to Shakira), gets great pleasure from randomly quizzing us for the names of certain buildings, walkways, parks, or monuments when we are at our most hung-over. We quickly catch on that while in Cuba....when in doubt...the correct answer is always Jose Marti. Natalia loves her Cuba, and now so do we. Symbolism is huge in Santiago de Cuba. You immediately realize it while visiting their large cemetery on the outskirts of town. Santa Ifigenia is well preserved, overcrowded yet orderly, and boasts quite the guest list. The mausoleum for Jose Marti has a small honour guard that goose-steps on the hour. ...and if you don't know who Jose Marti is, you ... read more

Odd how one song can make up the soundtrack of your life? Soundgarden just happened to be playing as I peered down from the plane window to see the blackest sand beaches desperately trying to flee dense jungle. The song seemed weirdly appropriate. My seatmate asked, "There is going to be a runway some time soon, right?" We were only about two feet off the turquoise ocean when we suddenly hit pavement. Hola Baracoa. ....or should I say Holy Baracoa? Hurricane Ida came in right behind us, unleashing her torrential rain for days. Angry ocean blasted over the measly malecon seawall, and the Baracoanians went about their lives without batting an eyelash...they'd seen this all before. Me, a diehard Vancouverite*, for the first time in my life, was caught without an umbrella. *Vancouverite: proper noun (Vancouverites) ... read more

Arriving to Cuba was sort of like homecoming. Old Soviet style apartment buildings, street signs, and cars! Oh my god, Lada, Moskvich, Volga, Niva, and my favorite, Zaporojec. These are ancient Russian car brands. They invariably carried us through our childhood, smelling like styrofoam and gasoline, making us nauseous, causing us to cringe at the thought of a road trip. They are reliable. Even a model from the late 80s or early 90s will serve you faithfully. Although, once in awhile requiring you to prop open the hood in the middle of a busy street to tinker, as if reminding you what it looks like, from the inside—teaching you its moody disposition. Often you'll be found running along your car, perhaps in your flip-flops, holding tight to the wheel, maneuvering through the open door. Until finally ... read more

(This is an old story, never before told) A small trickle of blood collected on my neck as I tried desperately to recall the Spanish for “stop humping my leg, you stupid dog!” In all my confusion, the words failed to come, and that mangy mutt just kept doing its thing against my bare, sweaty leg. Its owner seemed to neither notice nor care, and she brushed me off despite my pleas for help. Where on earth were the police when I needed them? Probably not the wisest idea, but in my desire to escape the deceptively pretty confines of Havana’s tourist district, I had decided earlier today to set off on my own and explore the streets of the old city. On this side of the invisible fence between foreigner and local, daily life beat ... read more

(17 photos) Cayo Blanca: WOW! Crystal water, white sand, blah blah....not exactly the norm if you live in London! And Varadero, much as I wanted not to go there, was fab in a mindless, just look at the turquoise-sea-and-beach- kind of way. And certainly not over run by thousands of tourists, as I'd expected...all very calm, very friendly and really just fine....... read more

So we left Habana on Monday morning and went westwards along the coast. We stopped shortly for lunch in the nicely prepared but rather unspectacular National Park "Las Terazzas" and made it to the nice little town of Vinales until Monday evening. The beautiful landscape consists of karstic outcrops that range out of the soil. On day two we went on along the coast driving on bumpy and only hardly frequented roads. As hitchhiking is a very usual thing in cuba we picked up several passengers on our way which mostly have been a nice company for a couple of kilometers. In the evening we arrived in the southwest of the country in Playa Maria La Gorda. A long and hardly frequented beach in front of beautiful and incredibly clear turquoise waters. As cubans usually must ... read more

We arrived in La Habana on Thursday 23rd of July late at night. So we had stepped from US-impacted Costa Rica into the very different world of cummunistic Cuba. Used to but also kind of tired of our usual accomodation in the hostels we were really amazed by the friendly welcome at midnight in the beautiful casa particolar "Casa Dulce" situated in an old and nicely clean prepared colonial house in Habana Centro. For the upcoming weekend we did not have much more of a plan than hanging out in Habana and see what might be going on on the July 26th for the 50th anniversary of the success of the revolution. Actually it does not need much more of a plan in Habana as it is always nice just to walk along the streets, enjoying ... read more
