Drenched in a tropical thunderstorm I peer through the doorway into Ernest Hemingway’s writing room, the top room in an observatory adjoining Finca Vigia his home on the outskirts of Havana. His typewriter, a battered old black machine, still has a sheet of paper in it. Here it is that he wrote his Pulitzer winning book The Old Man and the Sea. We are not allowed inside. The house is kept just as Hemingway lived in it. Some people are annoyed. They hadn’t read the small print saying we would only be able to view through open windows and doorways. ... read more

I made this video clip of a boxer trainer with one of his students while walking down the street in Havana. They were happy for me to film on my Flipcamcorder. Now the cultural stuff: museums very disappointing. While the buildings were superb the work they contained hardly represented the vibrancy of the culture we could see outside. In fact some of the paintings looked like the dregs from Europeans museums. Moreover the documentation was all in Spanish. Did they not want visitors from the outside world? Shared table in cafe - national museum worth a visit for this art decor room alone- with some Canadians. They are staying in a bed and breakfast with a former policeman who says he cant bring up a family on the state wage of £17 a month and now ... read more

Havana Tropicanna nightclub. Most from our party dress up in their finest. After all we have paid £74 each for a ticket. We expect the best. It is not to be. We are marshalled to our seats and it quickly becomes obvious that we are not going to see much. In fact some see nothing at all because the view from the way the tables are placed at right angles to the stage allows them to see nothing. Malcolm quickly susses this out and we get moved so that at least we do have a restricted view. We feel guilty leaving the rest of the party behind but there is now ay that the guide however much he may argue can get a whole party of 50 plus visitors moved. There just isn’t anywhere for them ... read more

Havana Get fortune told in the Old Square by a flamboyant Cuban woman with lots of rings on her fingers who speaks no English and I speak no Spanish. She has a friend who acts as interpreter. After much slapping of thighs she announces I have trouble with my knees. "You don’t need to pay 10 dollars to be told that," says Malcolm. OK I was conned. So what. It added to the carnival atmosphere. ... read more

Late night in Havana. We stroll through the old city. It's late but we feel safe. Crime we are assured is negligible, so we take a rickshaw and ask the driver to take us around for five dollars. He dives down some back streets. We are plunged almost into darkness. Malcolm gets uneasy. He fidgets. He is worried. Is not this Castro's famed socialist state? there's nothing to worry about. Then I see it. A dead woman sprawled across the pavement. The rickshaw driver ignores the corpse and pedals even faster. ... read more

Cuba Our arrival into Havana is like something out of an old film set. Crowds gather on deck as we enter the port, heavily guarded by old world canons. Last week Thomson Dream generated worldwide media coverage, as the first British cruise ship to be allowed into Cuba. We are told that our visit will be the last. For political reasons Thomson will not be going again. We are about to step into a time warp though not all passengers share this sense of occasion. I bump into an aquaintance in the ship’s lift. ‘You going ashore?” “No…can’t is bothered. You got to change your money and you may not be get it back. Lot of palaver. No…I am not going.” ... read more

Whilst in Cancun, I had assumed that I could purchase a ticket through Cuba´s national airline, Cubana, without any problems. Prior investigation revealed that flights are normally fully booked up for the next couple of days. However, their website is a little behind as I discover that the next flight is 8 days away when arriving into Cancun, and I don´t want to spend 8 days in Cancun! Fortunately, Cubana has a sales office in Cancun which are very helpful in finding me two cancellations - departing on the 20th and returning on the 24th. I´m wary that this might not be enough to see Havana, but it turns out to be just right. Prior planning is required as you can only take one of four currencies to Cuba - Canadian Dollar, Swiss Franc, Euro and ... read more

Cuba surprises, on occasions frustrates, and sometimes just completely takes your breath away. After Vinales, we spent a week in the beautiful colonial city of Trinidad located on Cuba’s southern Caribbean coast. It is stunning – cobblestone streets, both restored and crumbling stone houses, and of course a beautiful stretch of Caribbean beach. It was once a wealthy Spanish town built on slavery and the sugar industry. It also has the apparently normal history for towns of this region of being plundered repeatedly by English pirates; some like Francis Drake were later ‘rewarded’ by the English with knighthoods. We managed to rent a whole house to ourselves – mainly to have some personal space which is not really something you have when staying in a normal casa particular (you are in the middle of a Cuban ... read more

In just 6 days, we'll be heading off to spend 3 weeks working on, and hopefully improving, our Spanish skills in a language school in central Havana ... Last year at this time we had the good fortune to be in the high altitude surrounds of lovely Cusco, Peru, learning about Incan culture and studying Spanish. We learned an incredible amount of vocabulary and "verbos" and even tasted the delicacy Guinea Pig ("Cuy" en espanol)...we came to know some warm, generous, wonderful people whose lives have been spent entirely in the mountainous Andes...now it's time to move forward with additional practice in Spanish while enjoying the great architecture and culture of Cuba. We've visited Cuba previously but we're hoping that in this 3 week sojourn that we can get a slightly better feel for the culture, ... read more
