Santiago de Cuba is a pretty small place; we kept bumping into the same locals all over town as well as Emma and Patrick again, two days after they had left us behind in Baracoa. Having all enjoyed each other's company so much first time around, we thought we might as well reconvene in the evening for one last night out together. Famed for its music and nightlife, Ching enjoyed both so much in Santiago de Cuba last time around that she was keen to hit Casa de la Trova again that evening. I enjoyed it too but thought that once was enough and so I joined Emma, Patrick and a girl Emma had previously met on her travels – Aude from France and her casa-mate Lara from Holland – for a few ‘quiet drinks’. With ... read more

Geo: 23.12, -81.36We departed Halifax for our one-month trip to Cuba on a perfect fly day – blue skies, crisp weather. The required three-hour arrival prior to flight seemed ridiculous but not wanting to end up without a seat or something equally as silly, we left with time to spare on our new Nova Scotia Heritage Day holiday. Our good friend CG offered to park our car at her home while we were gone and drove us to the airport. Sweet! I continue to use a crutch to facilitate mobility; if I have to walk far or stand long, the crutch enables me to take the weight off my osteoarthritic knees which have experienced a flare-up. Although I debated at great length whether to use my hiking poles or bring a crutch, the crutch won out ... read more

After a slight break (no pun intended) due to my recent hospital visit, we will now re-visit our Spring Break excursion to Cuba. Our visit to Old Havana ended too soon. There are lots of things we would have liked to have seen but time got away on us. The bus to take us to the beaches of Veradero pulled up right on time and away we went to the second half of our Cuban adventure. The All-inclusive Resort I was a bit apprehensive about spending time at an all-inclusive resort. I am not particularly a-sit-around-on-the-beach kind of person, so what would I do there? The ride from Old Havana to the Veradero peninsula was certainly pleasant in our large Chinese-made bus. Some pretty nice scenery and we passed lots of old cars whose condition gradually ... read more

This February my family took a vacation to Cuba. My dad planned this one, so it was a holiday to a resort with the purpose of snoozing on the beach all day and drinking lots of beer. This is not my ideal type of vacation but it was still a nice getaway with perfect weather and nice facilities. Locals comment that Varadero isn't Cuba, it's tourist. I would agree. It is a nice town and the people are friendly, but they all have something to sell you. My favorite part of the town was their little museum. Its an old beach house tucked in at the end of the street with a big wrap around balcony that overlooks the ocean. The lady working there didn't speak english and the displays were all in spanish, which was ... read more

Ella subió al avión en la mañana, después de 9 horas aterrizó en La Habana... no quiero ir en su carro a Varadero... As the alarm went off at ridiculous o’clock, I jolted awake. My unbelievable excitement at the size of the bed in the Radisson Hotel did not even come close to the level of excitement I felt about my impending trip to Cuba. As the plane touched down, and the cabin crew sprayed bug repellent up my nose and in my eyes, I couldn’t have been happier. It was about to begin! Varadero, 3 days, sun, beach and birthdays, the stakes were high... and let me tell you, when Fidel says the best beaches in Cuba are here, I am not one to argue. Varadero is a town in the north west of Cuba, ... read more

Hola de Cuba! Days in Cuba: 2 Diego Luna spotted: not as of yet. But hope still remains. ------------------------------------- Ah, the balmy, balmy weather of an island nation. I look outside, and well... yeah, not much sun to be had. We in Varadero are currently experiencing an unmistakeable amount of Rain. We're not talking a drizzle here: this morning started off with a monsoon-like sheet of water that can only be found outside of North America; the sky opening up, and tropic thunder raineth forth; you step outside, and you fear a concussion type of weather. The kind of thing where you're left gasping and ringing out every item of clothing, and cars struggle through puddles that are the size of, well, cars. While this might bum out my travel mates, I seem to find myself ... read more

(17 photos) Cayo Blanca: WOW! Crystal water, white sand, blah blah....not exactly the norm if you live in London! And Varadero, much as I wanted not to go there, was fab in a mindless, just look at the turquoise-sea-and-beach- kind of way. And certainly not over run by thousands of tourists, as I'd expected...all very calm, very friendly and really just fine....... read more

hola from the gang in CUBA. Well we're here in Cuba drinking free drinks of all sorts, soking in the sun and making bus trips to la Habana. However it was a Meg and Chris way to get here. I'll start with our trip from North Bay to Barrie to Toronto to Cuba all in the same night/morning. So Meg and I got a late start out of North Bay and ended up leaving at around 11 pm to try and get to Barrie in time to catch the van service from Jacobs house to Pearson. Lets just say we made it on time at 3am after really bad rain and some thick fog. So right from the car to the van we got on the way to Toronto to catch a 6am flight out. The ... read more
