From our garden cabina onto a bus bound to the depths of the jungle we went. We originally planned to stay at a little resort on the outskirts but met a couple on the bus going to a place IN the jungle for much less money. The only catch was you had to pack in your own food, which we were not prepeared for but really wanted to go, so decided to wing it and starve, lol. We had our little packets of oatmeal, some Ritz crakers and peanut butter, so figured that would do. We signed in at the bottom and strapped on the packs to hike into our tree fort dwelling 30 minutes into the jungle. From there we walked a short path to a couple of little waterfalls and then ate some oatmeal and waited for dark. The 3 of them (myself tagging along only to not be left behind alone in the dark) thought it would be a blast to get out the head lamps and walk around in the dark searching for anything creepy and crawly they could find, I was scared out of my skin with shoes and socks on as high as I could
pull them and we saw some pretty cool stuff, bugs, glow bugs, HUGE toads, frogs, lizards, spiders, NO SNAKES, toucans and monkeys. The next morning we got up to view the map of the miles of jungle trails to be explored and choose to take a route through 3 trails to connect us to 2 large waterfalls and swimming holes and then wade the 2 hours down the Rio Tigre River back to the small town we had started in. We opted to leave our large packs behind locked up and took only day bags in garbage bag water protection for our trip. The walking through the jungle was amazing and I dont think I have words to describe it. The vines grab you, the noises are deafening and beautiful and the trail winds through some of the most dense tropical jungle and rainforest we had ever seen. It was a day out of the Planet Earth series. When we arrived at the waterfalls we put on the swim suits and jumped underneath for some MUCH needed cool water. After some crackers and peanut butter, we headed to the river. The river was beautiful and terrifying at the same time.
We waded through the water downstream for an hour and 45 minutes, at some points it was past waist height and we had to carry our bags over our head. We climbed over logs, rocks, through current and holes, me in my underware and a t shirt, hoping we would come out somewhere down stream. Yes, we finally did see a snake, Ross almost stepped on it, but it was small and stayed curled up on his rock. We came out with only a few minor cuts and bites and headed back up the to the treehouse to retrieve our luggage and then hiked back down (it was exhausting, my legs were shaking I could hardly stand) and quickly threw them in our new room in town, took a quick shower and literally ran to the nearest place for FOOD and beer. We passed out at a modest 6:30 pm and were up and at em on the bus at 6 am this morning. We are now waiting for the ferry and trying to get to Uvita up the coast today. Will tell you how it goes. xoxo
