Exploring Coronado

Ever since I started my school in Coronado, I've really come to appreciate rural community living. When most ESL teachers get to Costa Rica, they picture themselves sipping a Piña Colada, lying in a hammock, watching the sunset. And this is what most of us do, at first. However, once the thrill of the beach wears off, we find ourselves back in San Jose, searching for more sustainable teaching jobs. Most paying jobs are found in the Central Valley. There are some excellent volunteer positions speckled throughout the country, however.

For the past few months, my wife and I have been exploring the area surrounding Coronado and what we've discovered has been truly amazing. There is just so much to see and do. Hiking, rappelling, canopying, white water rafting, visiting beautiful waterfalls, touring local farms... and it's all within such a short radius. This weekend we are actually going to check out another waterfall where two of my former students plan to set up a rappel tour. We can't wait. I'll be sure to give an update and post pics when we get back.

I guess my point here is that the adventure by no means has to end once you buckle down and decide to get a serious teaching job. You just have to expand your horizons and explore!
