Girls in AquaAfter being with Ida for 3 weeks, I had her converted to Aqua ... her new dress and me matching :)
Me on the tarzan swing Well ... as a slight diversion from South America, in search of sun, surf (and the odd rainy season!) I have now headed back up to Central America and am currently making my way along the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica and Panama. I have been travelling again with Pete who I met at school in Guatemala and over the last 3 weeks, we've made our way from the capital, San Jose right along the Caribbean Coast and have just crossed the border into Bocas del Toro in Panama.
So ... coming from Bolivia, which I would have to say is still my favourite country so far ... my first impressions upon arrival in Costa Rica were that in comparison to Bolivia ... the Ticos (as the costa ricans call themselves) are familiar with the concept of queuing, they have road rules (that are obeyed), the toilets here always come with a toilet seat (and toilet paper!), there are bus ticket inspectors everywhere, the locals are speaking english to me and everything is 5 times the price ... Crazy stuff!
But undoubtedly Costa Rica is an incredible country, with picturesque tropical landscapres,
erupting volcanos, a mini-amazon as well as chilled out caribbean beaches ... and I've only seen half the country so far!!
Swinging like Tarzan and Flying over Treetops We started out our Costa Rican adventures in Monteverde, where the highlight was undoubtedly the canopy tour which involved harnessing up and flying like crazy over the rainforest treetops. There were 18 ziplines in total, with my favourite being the tarzan swing which has been captured here on video here if you want to watch my tarzan style and hear my screams turn into laughter as a freefell onto the swing and then accidently kick the attendant a few times as he tries to slow me down!!
Horseriding to La Fortuna and hot molten lava Well you might be thinking i'd be over volcanos by now but seeing an incredibly active volcano spewing out red hot molten lava just after sunset was pretty amazing. Arenal volcano is the key attraction at La Fortuna, along with the most amazing hot baths that i've ever seen. I felt like I was in a movie set, with around 18 completely sculpted hot baths with fountains, bridges, pool-side bars all set into a hill
Riding to La FortunaAt the end of our picturesque horse ride to La Fortuna, we rounded the corner and there was Arenal Volcano ...
side, it really was breathtaking. Spending the evening soaking in the baths was one of the most relaxing things I've done on trip!!
We travelled from Monteverde to La Fortuna on horseback on a really pretty trail through tropical forest ... For the first time in ages I had my confidence back on a horse and so Pete and I were having galloping races as our horses competed for the leading position. Our tour guide was a true Tico cowboy ... with a mullet hair style that would put most to shame. The trip was complete as we rounded the final corner of the trail on the horses and there in front of us was the perfectly symetrical Arenal Volcano, visible right to the peak, we were pretty lucky as the clouds and mist had been lingering around the previous few days.
Hitting the Caribbean Coast and experiencing the mini-amazon in Tortuguero Tortuguero, in the top north of the country, not only is on the Caribbean Coast but also is situated on a massive river that is home to the Tortuguero National Park which was amazingly similar to the Amazon. So, at 6am the next morning we got
in a little dingy and with only heavy old wooden paddles, we took off up the river spotting turtles, monkeys, sloths, cayman (little alligators) and even a lizard known as 'the jesus lizard' because it can walk on water! We weren't so lucky as to encounter a giant leather back turtle laying eggs on the beach (it is rare but there was a sighting a few days before us), but I still really enjoyed Tortuguero and it was also here that I tasted some of the most tasty banana bread I've ever had at a little bakery set on the river, I was in heaven!
Chilling in Cahuita So ... sadly leaving Tortugero and after a boat ride, then a bus, another bus, another bus and then one more bus ... all hot enough to fry eggs inside ... we arrived in the chilled out little town of Cahuita on the beach and with a gorgeous national park right on the coast line. In Cahuita, we relaxed with a day of snorkling the coral reefs and then went for a guided walk in the national park, where we found a rambunctious group of monkeys who hung out with us
on the beach for a while!
Particularly on the Caribbean coast, Bob Marley is god and reggae flows from every cafe and bar ... by the time we left the caribbean I must admit i was completely reggaed-out. It was also in Cahuita that I fell in love with grilled whole red snapper ... it was everywhere and so delicious when cooked Caribbean style ... at one particular restaurant, the owner, Roberto, came out and introduced himself and told us he would cook up a special recipe for the red snapper just for us, so we got an 'off the menu´special cooked by the owner himself!
Learning to Surf in Puerto Viejo It was in Puerto Viejo that I took my first serious surfing lesson ... although I had previously made a half-hearted attempt at Tathra beach to take one lesson I had never really tried to get into surfing ... but with the rest of the year and the pacific coast ahead of me ... I'm determined to get better at this great sport. The adrenaline rush I got just from riding the whitewash was great so I'm imagining it can only get better. I got up
on my first wave and by the end of the lesson could paddle onto tiny waves myself (although they didn't feel so tiny at the time), so I'm looking forward to practicing some more .. I'll keep you posted on my progress!!
It was also in Puerto Viejo that I was reunited with Nicole, Sabina and Ida, girls that I'd been travelling on and off with for about 3 weeks in total ... we had a great girls day out at the beach, renting the cool gearless bikes, that all the locals get about on, and then cruising 10 kms to a quiet and deserted beach, stopping to check out the howler monkeys en route! We also stayed at a very trendy hostel that had great murals every where, check out the photo of my favourite mural .. 'ape shit' that was appropriately placed on the toilet block!
Heading to Panama ... Bocas del Toro To avoid going back through the capital of Costa Rica to cross over to the Pacific side, a better alternative was crossing into Panama and heading down to the Pacific coast that way ... so it was a nice excuse to stop
for a week in a cute little town called 'Bocas del Toro' or 'Mouths of the Bull' on the Caribbean coast of Panama. It's interesting that the Caribbean culture doesn't change across the border and we found the same chilled out, reggae vibe in Panama.
Here we spent our time getting to remote islands, often we were the only ones on the beach, where we spent the day swimming, reading, relaxing in the sun and playing cards, again, life is very tough hey! One day we got the boat back from the beach to drop us off at a bar on the water .. 'Aqua Lounge' .. where the key drawcard was definitely the trampoline out in the sea ... Ida and I had so much fun bouncing each other around and jumping off, I felt like a 5 year old again! It was also at this beach that I met a group of 6 aussie guys all travelling together, and when they asked me where in Oz I was from, upon hearing 'Bega' they all screamed ´CHEEEEESE´... (admittedly they'd drunk 80 beers between them at the time ... ) but still it was definitely a proud 'Bega' moment
My broken Flip Flop now left in the barMy favourit aqua flipflop broke walking to the beach ... so it was uncanny that the beach bar was called ´flipflop´.. so they nailed my shoes to the poles, so i left a piece of my aqua in Panama!
all the way from Panama!
On one of the beaches near Bocas that we went to, my favourite aqua flip flops broke on the muddy track we had to walk to get there... so it was incredibly coincedental that the bar on the beach happened to be called´flip flop´and so the bar staff happily added my flip flop to the collection by nailing my shoes to the pole at the bar ... so you'll be pleased to know that i left a piece of my aqua in Panama!
It was also in Bocas del Toros that unfortunately I had to say goodbye to my super fun travel companions, Ida and Nicole, as we were all going our separate ways ... but we had a big night at a club on the water called Barco where we boogied the night away to the eclectic mix of music that was playing .. a very sad night to part company and I'll definitely miss these girls being around.
At the moment, I'm honing my surfing skills on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, so I'll try to get another blog done soon to keep you posted on my progress!
Keep me posted everyone on what you're up to,
Tamara :)
Relajando en la Caribe ... Costa Rica a Panamá
Waterfalls in La FortunaArriving at the waterfalls we hiked to in La Fortuna... swimming in the freezing water was a nice relief from the heat of the walk
¡loca loca!
On the bridgesAt bridge number 6 on our walk through the national park
Waiting for the lava ... Waiting for the sun to set so we could see the lava spewing out of Arenal Volcano, that you see behind us
[ b]Yendo a Panamá...
Waiting for the lavaChilling with a Costa Rican beer whilst Ida and I wait for the sun to set over Volcan Arenal
Monkey businessSome of the monkeys on the trees right on the beach in Cahuita
Tamara:)
