Hey all, Dennis took me to Costa Rica, where we were mostly traveled around Poas Volcano. This was my second time in Costa Rica, and I had a completely different experience than my first one. Until later, Cy... read more

I have been in Costa Rica for a few days now and so far I love it. The work is challenging enough but its not overbearing yet where i have to take the work back to my hotel. This saturday, I got to take a 12 hour tour outside of Costa Rica which included, a coffee plantation, Poas Volcano, rain forest and a boat tour to a banana plantation. Most of it was pretty good but I will just go over the Rainforest trip since it was the most disappointing yet fun tour. When we first arrived to the start of our rainforest tour, our guide pointed out a wooden bridge suspended by ropes that went over a small river. He told us that this is where the rainforest started. Before the rainforest tour started, we ... read more

Here in Costa Rica we have experienced our 2nd significant earthquake in 2 days … I personally experienced the 4.0 magnitude yesterday while in the bathroom (tell me you didn’t just smile) and today's 6.2 magnitude while standing on a ladder helping my next-door neighbor secure a kitchen cabinet to a wall above a fridge. The ride on the ladder was more fun, but the ride on the porcelain was definitely more humorous. We were fortunate with just getting a good long & strong shaking … close but no damage. Others unfortunately did not do so well. Summary as of 9:00am, 01/19/09 At 1:22pm on Wednesday January 8th, 2009 the reported most severe Costa Rica earthquake in 120 years resulted in 23 confirmed deaths, approximately 7 still missing, over 300 injuries as well as extensive damage ... read more

Hola! Hope everyone had a great weekend! I didn’t travel too far this weekend, but I did see a couple of neat things within an hour or so bus ride of my house. And I did plan this upcoming weekend adventure to Puerto Viejo. It’s supposed to be a really neat beach on the Carribean side, Northwest of where I am. It should be about 5 hours on the bus which I will be leaving on Friday right after class. I’m definitely looking forward to it because right now it is the summer season for the Carribean Coast, which means great beach weather! This past Saturday, I went to Poas Volcano. It was really neat to see and very surreal too because of how huge it actually is. It took about 1 hour to get there ... read more

Our last day of Spanish lessons and our teacher took us to her little girl´s school to enjoy the celebrations of the day of annexure of Guanacaste province (ex Nicaragua) to Costa Rica. All the kids looked great and all the yummy mummies were there also. It was lots of fun and David drew lots of glances with his strange eyes. He stands out because a) he´s bald and b) his eyes are a different colour. Today we take 3 buses to arrive at our accommodation at Vulcan Poas. This means we sleep on the side of a volcano for 3 nights. Kinda freaky to think of. Gerarda told us this morning that the 2 loud bangs we heard last night was Poas letting of some steam. I´m sure to sleep tonight after that. The bus ... read more

The Poás Volcano (Volcán Poás) is located 71 kilometers or 44 miles Northeast of our house in Costa Rica. The attached picture was taken Sunday (04-20-08) near the top of our ascent to the Poás Volcano (Volcán Poás) at about 8,500 feet in the middle of Costa Rica. We have some more pictures posted online at http://BienvenidosCostaRica.dotPhoto.com, but unfortunately none of the pictures are of the Poás Volcano (pronounced: poe-oss) itself. During our entire visit the volcano crater was cloud covered. Kind of a bummer after an hour of driving straight-up in low gear on winding mountain roads! But we made the best of the situation and hiked the cloud covered trails for about an hour in addition to the great views during the trip up and back down. The attached aerial view of the Poás ... read more

Day 2. Look at the size of that sphere. By 8 am we have filled the bus and are off to visit the Poas Volcano. Having been warned that the volcanic caldera, or crater, is visible only 30% of the time, we are pleasantly surprised to find an absolutely clear sky guarding an aqua-colored lake—the startling color created by sulfurous fumes. I don’t think I’ll make it to the second crater—a beautiful clear-water lake. The one-half hour trek has me huffing and puffing after only a few feet, a combination of altitude and my recent bout with pneumonia. I am actually sort of mortified that I am having such a difficult time and if I hadn’t been accompanied by a good-looking man who encouraged me to take my time, I might have turned back. Ah. Motivation. ... read more

We took a fun day trip to Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall/Animal Reserve. Our first stop was the volcano - a beautiful drive up lush green fields including many strawberry farms. You park at the top and then walk to the crater, where you are greeted by the amazing sight of a huge crater with swirling gases mixing with clouds coming down from the slopes of the crater. And the boys immediately noticed the sulfur smell. During the half hour we stayed at the crater viewpoint, it would periodically be blanketed by clouds and then suddenly they would dissipate in the sun. We have attached some photos but as with many things of this scale, our camera has really not done it justice. At the park there is also a neat blue lake formed by ... read more

We just got back from an amazing trip to Volcan Poas and La Paz waterfall garden on Saturday. It was INCREIBLE!!! Volcan Poas is at about 8000 feet elevation and the bus ride there had great views of the central valley as we went up the windy windy roads. As we got to higher elevation it began to rain acid rain from the volcano. Once we got to the top we hiked to a point where we were supposed to be able to see a Volcano but it was too cloudy and we could not see it. I guess we will just have to come back! After that we took about a 2 mile hike through the RAIN FOREST!! We were amazed by all of the different plants and trees and the fact we were ... read more
