Today we went right up to the Nicaragua border for a boat trip around the Cano Negro wildlife reserve. Our guide Alcides lived up to his tribal name of "white hawk" by spotting a huge variety of wildlife for us, from Cayman, basilisk and turtle to egrets, roseate spoonbills and brilliant blue kingfishers. At one point we dived into a bush where he had spotted a little row of resting bats on a branch. Later we saw squirrel monkeys, white faced capuchins and sloths and then a group of howler monkeys quite close. The sound of the boat set them off with their loud calls just over our heads. When we reached the border we all got out and walked up the bank for a photo shoot of us with one foot in each country. After ... read more

We are safely at the Arenal volcano observatory where the food is excellent. The volcano is making a fair bit of noise but no lava visible, just rocks tumbling down and big puffs of smoke. In the mornings we can hear the howler monkeys in the jungle. Today we hiked down a gorge to the foot of a 70 metre waterfall and swam in the river, which was very cold. The rain was quite heavy but warmed us back up again. We went out to lunch in La Fortuna, then in the afternoon hiked through the cloud forest up to the old lava flow, Saw lots of birds and some very pretty orchids, also some very large golden orb spiders. Mrs P and Charlotte claimed the sight of the day however, as they saw a rare ... read more

Yesterday we left Jinetes de Osa. We took a cab back to the Drake Bay airport, but this time it was a truck, not a tractor. Our flight was pretty quick and we were back in San Jose after a quick stop in Puerto Jimenez. This time we sat right at the front of the plane so we got to watch the pilots fly. It was really neat. When we arrived in San Jose we were met by the car rental company. We filled out our paperwork and were on our way to Arenal. The drive from San Jose to the volcano was mostly on a very narrow, very windy, very hilly road through the Costa Rican countryside. It was a bit nerve wracking when we passed trucks going the other way, but we got here ... read more

La Fortuna and the invisible volcano… After two wonderful nights in Monteverde we set of around 8 in the morning heading for a small town nestled at the base of Arenal volcano called La Fortuna. I have to mention the fantastic drive down the mountains as we approached Lake Arenal; possibly one of the most impressive drives I’ve ever been on. Unfortunately, due to excessive alcohol intake the night before, many of the other people on the tour didn’t appreciate the winding decent from Monteverde and were more concerned with not vomiting on each other in the back of the mii-bus, much to my amusement! Once we arrived at the western shore of the lake we boarded a small boat to take us across the lake, saving us about 3 hours of road time. Crossing the ... read more

We left Monteverde for Arenal and the city of La Fortuna. We did the jeep-boat-jeep transfer which takes about 2 1/2 hours. It is about hour on a gravel road, 30 minutes on Lake Arenal, which was very pleasant, and then by a relatively good road to La Fortuna. This was much better than the alternative which is 4 hours on a bumpy gravel road. After Santa Elena, we feel like we are in the big city with a population of 8,000. It is also much warmer than Monteverde with pineapple and orange orchards and a lot of agriculture. However, its primary industry is tourism due to Arenal Volcano, hot springs and adventure. Arenal Volcano is the most active volcano in Costa Rica and on clear day you can see the lava and smoke. Of course, ... read more

Nikki has been writing in a journal each night, she captures the activities from the day that were most memorable to her. Here is her entry for this particular day: Sunday 2-7-10 “We woke up and my dad brought me to the barn. I milked the cow and collected chiken and turkey eggs. I went to the restaurant and dropped off the eggs. Then we went to breakfast. Then we went on a horse ride. My horse was Hittanna. We went over hills and down hills. Then we swam in a waterfall my grandma slipped on a rock, and was hanging from her bathing suit. We all laughed. On our way back I found snake skin it was cool! I got to steer the horse back. Then we saw a three toed sloth. We went back ... read more

Yesterday's trip to the volcano was great. We left the hostel at 3:30 and drove 20 minutes to a hiking point. Our tour guide was a local who lived close to the town where the 1968 eruption of the volcano shoked everyone because it had been dormant for 500 years and they all thought it was a mountain. He had TONS of pictures to show how much the volcano and town of La Fortuna has changed in the last 40 years. He also told us stories of illegally hiking the volcano many times and being arrested for it as well. lol. We got to a point where the van dropped us all off (there were about 10 of us) and then we hiked for 1.5 hours through the rainforest. We had some GREAT views of the ... read more

For the last several years, my family has kicked around the idea of traveling over Thanksgiving week instead of converging in Chicago, particularly since we'll be doing so a month later for Christmas. This year we finally pulled the trigger back in February, and for 30,000 miles on American Airlines we booked tickets to Costa Rica for the week. We pretty much followed the Frommers suggested one week itinerary, starting in San Jose, and heading to Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. The consensus advice that I received from others who visited the country was to get out of San Jose as soon as possible. We had to stay there the first night since we got in late, and after walking around in the center of town, we decided that we preferred to wake up before the ... read more
