Hello everyone...sorry to take so long to send some pics but this travel blog is very slow and we lost some pictures as well. On Christmas day in the early morning hours we got into our canopy flying fatigues (just like you were sky diving) and had one hell of a ride through the rainforest. Gary and Dani loved the excitement and the view. Darlene screamed all the way. After a quick lunch we headed to another place for an ATV four wheeling tour. It was fantastic. We were taken through lots of rough terrain, rivers, huge mud holes - Dani gave it the gas to spray as much mud on us as she could! It was two hours of fun. The next morning we headed to LaPaz Waterfall Gardens and Peace Lodge. The scenery was ... read more

Well, lots has happened in the past week. After Jaco, I said bye to Leslie and Miguel, and headed down to Quepos, to visit park nacional Manuel Antonio. Found a nice, new backpacker joint for $7US, which in Costa Rica is pretty cheap, then headed out to the park the following morning. Wow, it was truly breathtaking. At some points along the trail I was surrounded by monkeys overhead, who seem to follow you as you walk. The park is thick, thick primary forest that meets long stretches of white sand beach and huge cliffs...I'll get some more pictures up next time I get free internet...it takes a while. After a long day, I met up with 2 israeli girls at my hostel, and we all travelled back up to San Jose together. They took off ... read more

After taking a few crappy local buses, we decided to try out one of the "turismo" minvans to get to our next destination: the town of La Fortuna, next to Volcano Arenal in the northern part of Costa Rica. It probably would have taken us about 9 hours to get there via local buses - on the turismo minivan, it only took 5. Worth the extra cost, although Trish was still feeling motion sick and needed to lie down when we got here. In the evening we took a quick tour up to the north side of the volcano to watch the lava flow down the side. It was pouring with rain and most of the volcano was hidden in cloud, so I was pretty skeptical whether or not we would see anything much at all. ... read more

The Butterfly Conservatory near Arenal Volcano was an unexpected treat early in the morning during our visit to the volcano. We woke early and went for a drive around the lake ending up in a little area called El Castillo. We’d parked in front of the butterfly conservatory to let Bear get out for a walk when the gentleman working inside came out and offered to let us in for a tour. We hadn’t been to see any of the butterfly farms since we’d been here so we were game. We continue to be truly amazed daily with what others sometimes take for granted here. Our tour lasted about two hours walking thru five or six different butterfly habitats and two for frogs and other creatures. The stages of the butterfly were amazing. Seeing specimans, live ... read more

After watching the lava flow the night before (but I missed the 1 am eruption), we got up for a hike in the hanging bridges reserve. Another private property with outstanding views of the volcano, and lots more flora, fauna, and wildlife. This was a tough hike for me as one part was very steep. It takes me a little longer but I got there. The hanging bridges swing and are quite high up. The highlight of this hike was the strawberry poison dart frog, howler monkeys (they sound like dogs), and the yellow eyelash viper we saw at the last bridge. This night we went to the Hidalgo Family Hot Springs which is a family run operation on private property with springs heated by the volcano. The pools begin with a small very hot one ... read more

Today we had another marathon ride on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride going down the mountain toward the Arenal volano. I thought the road a little worse, but the countryside much prettier. Coffee growing area and we passed many pretty coffee plantations. Very cool and lush. I think this was the prettiest part of the trip, and Omar's informative, knowledgeable commentary made the time pass so quickly. We always took small breaks at roadside cafes for a coffee and pee. Always very friendly clean places. We stopped for lunch in Arenal but the place was too busy so we had to eat in the pizza parlor upstairs though we ate off the downstairs menu. Omar got a call during lunch then he asked me if I left a bag at the lodge in Monteverde. I said no, ... read more

This past Semana Santa (Good Week), I stayed at a cottage with my host family and two other families. It was really laid-back and fun. Everyday we would take a hike either through the forest or to the river and just relax. The wildlife was awesome as well. Interesting birds and a two-toed sloth living in the front yard was more than sufficient for a trigger-happy photographer like myself!... read more

Though they are only a few miles apart as the crow flies, Monteverde and Volcan Arenal remind one of the old "you can't get there from here" line. The Continental Divide is between them, and all the driving routes are round-about and long. One can use public buses and spend 7-8 difficult hours... or spend a little money and take the van-boat route, which gets you across in about 3 hours. We opted for the second. The van ride was comfortable, and we travelled through sparcely inhabited farm and grazing country and some ups and downs until we finally came to the shores of Lake Arenal. Following a pleasant boat ride on the lake, we disembarked at a beach by the dam. Another van met us and took us to our hotel. Choosing a place to ... read more

The clouds parted and we awoke to a spectacular view of the Arenal Volcano far from our balcony. We were incredibly lucky considering no one had seen it for weeks due to cloud cover. We had a lovely pancakes, maple syrup, and plantain breakfast (again...), and prepared to mount our horses! Yep, we decided to make our 3-hour journey to the volcano by horse! Now during the course of our trip, James and I had decided to place each animal we crossed in to 2 categories: Crazies and Assholes. For example, animals we had never seen before and did not know the names of (and there are many) were referred to as Crazies. Animals such as Hummingbirds who are beautiful but did not stay still for photographs are Assholes. My horse was an Asshole. He cantered ... read more

For anyone checking in, you remembered it is .org, not .com. Putting .com did not work, and it is so frustrating to search on these slow computers i gave up. But my brain is a little rested today and after sending the long email on my new yahoo account, I tried again to find the travelblog site through a google search, and here it is! So, I also have access to emails now, since I think i put in most of yours when I set this account up. I do not think I will try downloading photos, tho, since it is so slow. As I said in the email, this is such a beautiful place. No bugs, well, one ant did bite me, but no mosquitos. Birds just go on and on' a birder.s paradise. To ... read more
