So on from the land of the playa to the country of Belize. We caught a dodgy Belizean bus from Chetamul in Mexico to Belize City.
First impressions of Belize were not exactly how the Lonely Planet guide described (paradise). We hopped off the bus and were bombarded by taxi drivers wanting to take us somewhere. One good thing was that they spoke English, albeit with a hard to understand Jamaican type accent.
Belize City was how I imagined a third world country to be. Lots of creepy dogs, gross water and a taxi driver that put our bags on the roof without a tie down!!!!! A real shanty town. It got better though as the people were really friendly and there was no lack of compliments for us girls. "Hey baby, I think that smile is catching, smile and the world smiles with you"
We stayed one night Belize City and the took off to the mangrove island Caye Caulker for a couple of days. The motto of Caye Caulker is Go Slow. so true. The island was so small that you could see end to end. The water was awesome again, but the best thing about
the island was the atmosphere. The bar on the beach was called the Lazy Lizard - "a sunny place for shady people"!
The Barrier Reef at Belize is apparently second only to Australia, but I wasn´t that impressed. Hurricanes sporadically destroy the reef, so it is not as beautiful and colourful as ours. We did a bit of snorkelling on the reef at Caye Caulker and swam with a heap of sting rays, nurse sharks and a BARRACUDA. yikes. I was a bit scared. They have lots of teeth.
The rasta vibe is strong on Caye Caulker so to follow suit we partied at a rasta club called the i&i, a shrine to Bob Marley. Ladies night, very cheap.
The girls enjoyed Caye Caulker as we would get at least 10 compliments walking down the main street (dirt track maybe) of a morning. "Hey baby-faces, beautiful girls, you make my day (like two scoops of icecream, chocolate and vanilla).
Not sleazy at all though, just good natured appreciation. If you ever get the chance get to Belize, it is only about 6 hours bus ride from Mexico and is so worth it. So relaxed and the
locals are unbelievably friendly and happy to help tourists out. Hot as all get out though and not much aircon.
So from here I am planning on catching a flight back to NYC to get on another one to Costa Rica, bound for South America. Seeya there!
