Background: The island was uninhabited when first settled by the British in 1627. Slaves worked the sugar plantations established on the island until 1834 when slavery was abolished. The economy remained heavily dependent on sugar, rum, and molasses production through most of the 20th century. The gradual introduction of social and political reforms in the 1940s and 1950s led to complete independence from the UK in 1966. In the 1990s, tourism and manufacturing surpassed the sugar industry in economic importance.

Friends and Family, The next stage of my vacation brought me to the country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It's been a dream of mine to one day rent a sail boat and sail the Grenadines with friends, but until then I had to settle for the next best thing. After arriving in Kingstown, I caught a taxi to the harbour to catch the ferry over to one of the Grenadines: Bequia. This island had come highly recommended and I could see why as I entered the bay of Port Elisabeth. Just a small community on the island play [View Full Entry]

Blogger Dougo Last October, I was totally bumbed about the prospect of watching the final of the World Cup on my birthday from some bar in Jamaica. Even worse, watching a team other than Australia in the Semi Finals coz we couldnīt get tickets to the Semi they were more than likely going to play in. Thank goodness we stumbled upon the cruise ship over to St Lucia. The problem, as we found out upon arrival in the Caribbean, was not getting tickets for the matches, it was getting to and from the islands that were hosting them. Never mind [View Full Entry]

so yesterday we started exploring Barbados a little more, this involved hoping on a bus to banks town then after ariving getting on another bus and heading to the beach, at this stage its fair to say that most of us are over looking at new sights so relaxation is the only thing on the cards. We had the most remarklable bus ride, the bus driver was mad! the roads outside the main loations of barbados are crap they are narrow and twisty and in over all poor condition. However our bus driver saw fit to do over 100kph over blind [View Full Entry]

Well we have arrived safe and sound after a relatively drama free air jamaica flight from Grenada to Barbados. Havent seen a lot of Barbados yet, have not left St Lawrence Gap which is a touristy beachy place on the south coast full of bars, poms, and local men shouting "hello ladies". Barbados is beautiful but we all are missing the kitchy charm of 2nd world Grenada. Have had two nights out already here (the last stop of the tour - we have to go hard!). The first night we arrived we headed out to a restaurant for dinner and heard [View Full Entry]

At long last I can post about going places! (insert a "woot woot", "yippee", or a happy dance here, whichever you prefer) Yesterday we were in Sint Maarten, and I spent most of the time trying to figure out where I was in relation to Saba (the island where Alexis spent a few months a couple years ago) and thinking about how she'd likely been wherever I currently was. I went with my roommate (who is a fitness instructor on the ship) and her friend (who also works in the spa) and we walked out to Pointe Blanche Bay where we [View Full Entry]

Feliz Navidad, I have been very busy with duties onboard lately. And as you can imagine this time of year is very hard to grab some free time. However I can report that things have been swell. Let me fill you in I think I left you all with my White Water Rafting trip in Costa Rica. I think. Well let me tell you what kind of trouble I have managed to get myself into since then. Last week we did the 'Southern Caribbean' Cruise. This sails to Martinique - VERY EXPENSIVE and as the name suggests, French Origins but very [View Full Entry]

Hey hello, After leaving the Netherlands at the 24th of Nov, I arrived in Newark, New Jersey. When I was waiting in the gate at Schiphol I already met a few colleagues of the Holland America Line. So after arriving NJ we went strait to the hotel and did a little fresh up and then went right away to Manhattan NY. For me it was the 1st time NY, and it’s really how I imagined. Lot’s of people, on every corner of the street a Starbucks and everywhere you hear sirens. We did a quick tour NY, Broadway, Manhattan Mall, Empire [View Full Entry]

We're Leaving on a Jet Plane Finally, we’ve managed to pack up and rent out the house, as well as (hopefully) tying up all our other UK bound affairs. Over a month was spent in ferrying our various belongings to locations scattered across the UK, from Shropshire to Derby, Canterbury to Yorkshire, and a couple of motherloads in Poole and London. The odds of us ever finding it all again in a couple of year’s time seem remote. Huge thanks to all those who offered storage. We promise one day to clear your Basements / Garages / Lofts. We Are Going [View Full Entry]

...a UNESCO world heritage site in old san juan! La Fortaleza, built between 1533 and 1540, was the first defensive fortification built for the city of San Juan, and the first of a series of military structures built to protect the city. The construction was authorized by Charles V as a defense against attacks from the European powers of the day and Carib Indians. Since the 16th century, La Fortaleza has acted as the residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico, making it the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas and has been the residence of over 170 [View Full Entry]
