Background: The island was uninhabited when first settled by the British in 1627. Slaves worked the sugar plantations established on the island until 1834 when slavery was abolished. The economy remained heavily dependent on sugar, rum, and molasses production through most of the 20th century. The gradual introduction of social and political reforms in the 1940s and 1950s led to complete independence from the UK in 1966. In the 1990s, tourism and manufacturing surpassed the sugar industry in economic importance.

We had booked Horse Riding today - so we were all up early to be there for 8.30. Nice place, like riding stables worldwide seems to have a certain element of rundown mode built in. We arrived early about 8.15 and were there before the owner turned up - just a couple of stable hands getting the horses ready. We weren't the only ones on the ride - there were 3 other people as well. They would go down through the forest and past the windmill and then ride along Morgan Lewis beach (the one we'd been to earlier in [View Full Entry]

We can see you!
Neigh!

We got up today and it was overcast - still hot but raining. We needed some other things from the shops so we went back to Cave Shepherd in Holetown and bought some bits and pieces. We then headed upto Oyster Bay and it was absolutely lashing it down. Some people wouldn't even get out of the car! We went back to the Villa and decided to go and see the Sunbury plantation house (http://www.barbadosgreathouse.com/) this was very interesting particularly as you could go around by yourself and we were the only people there! Interestingly they left stuff out - if [View Full Entry]

Come out its not that wet!
I'm not tired honest!

On Saturday the 18th we tried to swim with the turtles at Paynes bay - but they weren't there or we couldn't find them. The water was also very cloudy with the after affects of Hurricane Dean and you couldn't really snorkel - we also went to Oyster Bay and managed to lose Eleanors snorkel and mask - so we ended up going home and lazing around the pool.. then out for a quick dinner at the Lucky Horseshoe. After the Gospel choir last week at the Crane we did something a little different this Sunday we went to have Brunch [View Full Entry]

It was grey and overcast when we got up today - but it was still warm and Matthew was in the pool even though it was lashing it down with rain. As it was raining we went shopping to Cave Shepherd in Holetown which was surprisingly good and then went up the West Coast to see if we could find the bay where the harbour master had stopped. On the way up we missed it, so we went to North Point and got some good pictures of the waves crashing on the coast and then onto River Bay. We then [View Full Entry]

Went to have a look at St. James church in Holetown when the maid arrived and then did some shopping at Cave Shepherd. Afterwards we came back to the villa and drove over to the East Coast - it was quite rough as they are predicting the tail end of Hurricane Dean will pass quite close to us. Lovely scenery but we decided to go back to the Crane. It was raining when we arrived at the Crane and they had boarded up the restaurants - apart from a couple of body boarders we were the only people on the [View Full Entry]

Rain doesnt stop you swimming

We had booked on the Harbour Master lunch cruise today from 11.00 to 15:00. This takes you up the West Coast of Barbados and then stops at a beach where you can snorkel and go down the 70 feet slide! Well certain members of the family can - I'll take the pictures! Matthew will et in the drinks (in his Man Utd shirt) and Eleanor is in the mood for dancing! We had lunch on the way up the coast and it was surprisingly good. After lunch the ship docked on a beach just north of Holetown and you could get [View Full Entry]

We went to Rockley beach as we were intending on body boarding - but the sea was flat so we went back to Carlisle bay and swam out to the wrecks. In fact you can walk more than half way then we took the body boards the rest of the way as floatation devices. Its easy to spot where to go as the 4 buoys are surrounded by small boats with divers and snorkellers. We got to one buoy and the wreck was a little disappointing, small boat, some fish but not many... then we turned round and were surrounded [View Full Entry]

Lunch

We went into Bridgetown and had a look around the duty free shops. Then had lunch at the Limelight bar overlooking the harbour and what was Trafalgor square (but is now Independence square). After lunch we headed towards Carlisle Bay as this is where some small boats have been sunk and you are supposed to be able to see lots of fish. We eneded up at Pebbles Beach which is next to the Hilton. No pebbles on the beach - so strange name. Lovely beach, soft sand. Asked in the Dive shop where the recks where and the man explained [View Full Entry]

Lunch

We had booked brunch at the Crane for 10.00 am. so we left the villa at about 9.15 (well 9.20 by the time we had turned of the tap Eleanor had managed to jam on...). We arrived at the Crane and there was a queue of people to get in through the gates. If your name wasn't on the list they didn't let you in! The breakfast was great and the Gospel choir nice to listen to while you eat! Everyone then went to the beach while I used the Cranes wireless network to upload another couple of days of blog. Did lots today - particularly as Matthew was really complaining about his ears and had had a very troubled night. We went to the Barbados Wildlife Reserve which has a mix of indigenous and imported animals but is known the world over for it's green monkey population. We arrived earlyish and it was hot - tropical hot (though Catherine has adjusted to the point she thinks it was just comfortable... wait until she goes home!). We paid the entrance with Cash(just) as they don't take Credit cards and went inside. You are immediately aware of how many tortoises there are... you [View Full Entry]
