Crossing to Chile We left Arequipa on the morning of the 26th April on an early bus, The terrain to the border is monotonous just desert, grey ugly desert so we snoozed. We jumped a cab in Tacna on the Peruvian side and our driver was a star, he helped us with our papers, lugged our bags and advised us on crossing the border, turns out it was pretty uneventful, We had no food stuff on us as they are very strict about no fruit and veg and also other food stuffs, the list is on the back of the migration card you have to fill in, We heard stories of some travelers trying to smuggle fruit over but getting caught, why would you? The fine is $250 and is not worth it for a few ... read more

Arequipa We arrived in Arequipa on St Patricks day, The journey was uneventful but I couldn't sleep so on arrival I fell into a deep sleep, We spent the first few days in Hostel Koala, a backpackers place, it was fine though noisy and would be more enjoyed by those wanting to party and meet other travelers, the rooms open on the the main courtyard so privacy is not high on the agenda but the staff are helpful and very nice to us. It was Paddy's day so celebrating was a must, we went to Farrens , a wee pub on the only pedestrian street (known as hippy street) to find it full of revelers but only a couple of Irish which of course we soon hooked up with, The staff were very generous with those ... read more

After flying over the Nazca lines we returned to the hotel for breakfast, it was then I noticed a glass box in the corner with the remains of a young woman"s mummy inside, I don't think I'm fussy but it didn't help my appetite, We decided to dine alfresco. We had hired a guide named Hilda to take us to other sites of interest in the area. We started with a site called Cahuachi, A huge temple in the middle of the desert, Italian archeologists are sill working on the site after 25 years and although highly impressive it would appear they have just hit the tidp of the iceberg, The temple stands 25kms from Nazca town and it is cruel terrain, the heat is oppressive and dry and there is little life, The temple is ... read more

goodbye Haucachina/Hello Nazca We arrived back in Haucachina and were surprised but happy to find Heidi still there, we decided to stay for a few more days, John needed to get back to work and he got stuck into that while Heidi and I enjoyed our last few days taking advantage of the pool and the great weather. It was Heidi's birthday and she wanted to celebrate in Ica, we jumped a cab a to the big smoke, now here's the thing, Ica is a large town but it was virtually impossible to find a decent restaurant, Ica is an odd place still recovering from the earthquake in 2007, many of the streets are in a tumbledown state and many building remain vacant and appear unsafe. Unfortunately it also has a reputation of being very unsafe. ... read more

We had to see Isla del Ballestas before we left Paracus, I had never seen a penguin in the wild before and was excited at the prospect so we booked our tour at 40 soles each and eagerly arrived at the marina early next morning, We waited as the boats lined up waiting for us to board, we paid a habour fee (2 soles each) and boarded our open speed boat put on our very sexy life jackets and off we sped. Just a little bit out of the harbor a half submerged submarine sat sporting a peruvian flag, I didn't know Peru had a navy never mind a submarine, then across the bay several large war ships sat docked, don't mess with these guys eh? 20 minutes later el Candelabro came into view, this is ... read more

We had heard that Paracus is a must see when you are in this area so since its only an hour away from Ica we decided to take a taxi there, what the hell, The somewhat barren desert landscape continues but there is respite from the heat as the breeze picks up nearer the coast, What's fascinating about the area we were driving through has flat plains on which there are perfectly square plots of various crops, green and lush surrounded by unforgiving desert, Dill, Asparagus,Paprica and of course potatoes, When it does rain which is seldom the farmers collect it in man made reservoirs and use it to irrigate their crops, there is also access to underground water. We arrived in Paracus village to yet another festival ( I swear we are not seeking them ... read more

Left Cusco, it was time to get away from the cold, it had been raining and the house we had rented had walls about 2 foot thick so it was freezing cold all the time, time for some sunshine to warm the old bones, So our motley crew John Heidi and myself left on Cruz del Sur on the night bus bound for Ica. Of course we were in a hurry and got nothing to eat before we left and no time to buy snacks, Heidi did so she got mugged by us and we all settled down for what was to be an uneventful trip. From Ica we took a taxi (5 soles) to Haucachina, it was a bit of a comedy moment when the taxi driver in his matchbox daewoo strapped our gear to ... read more

Moray/mountain biking from ollantaytambo/ Maras Carnival 20th Feb 2010 After the climb to the garrison in Ollantaytambo we took a wee walk around the town to look for somewhere to eat, On the main square surprisingly we found a tour operator open selling mountain biking tours as well as white water rafting though it was unavailable due to the high river and dangerous conditions but we decided to go ahead with the bike trip the following morning, from Ollantaytambo to Maras, down the mountain to the salt mines and then a bus connection to Cusco. We had an early start and surprisingly were not the only people doing the trip, a couple from the U.K. were our companions. We started at Moray another Incan site, this one unique as it's believed to be a nursery for ... read more

Hike from Hauran to Lares 13th-16th Feb 2010 Aiden our Irish pal and bartender in Paddy's had talked several times about doing a hike in the surrounding areas, Now we had done some hikes but with a few beers down our necks we devised a plan to do a "proper" 3 day hike into the Andies, We met in Paddy's on Monday night, John and I had earlier that day been refused an extension on our visa and were considering a mad dash to the border of Chile to get our stamps renewed but were assured that the Peruvian authorities are a friendly lot and we would pay a small fine leaving the country and then would be ok to return again, So about 10pm full of sauce we decided we would go the following morning, ... read more
