I recieved a very interesting comment on my Santorini page from a very pissed off American girl, whom I unfortunately can't find in the blogger-search. I would like to get a chat with her, she seems interesting. But before any more Americans might be to offended, I will try and explain my earlier comments on being with 30 Americans. So here we go: 1. Firstly I have American as well as Canadian friends, whom I am very fund of. And I find great interest in having a chat with an American considering the fact that if you wish to know something about a country (and who doesn't wanna know some insider about the States) then who else to ask than a native. 2. The reason I was very pissed on being with 30 Americans comes from ... read more

I left Santorini yesterday. It was nice to finally leave the island, though it has been great, but I started feeling that I did nothing with these precious days of holiday, -except trying to get a little more brown, which is and always has been impossible for me! There were people it was sad to say goodbye to, but that's life and that's travelling. You meet so many people and some of them you are destined to like. All you can do afterwards is to hope that you might have a free week to visit them one day. Being on Santorini I've had quit some bad news and further. Except from the daily Pina Colada and other party-island traditions, I've had several talks with my mother and czech-airlines whom I really don't understand. I had been ... read more

I arrived in Santorini a few days ago after a long, but relaxing boat trip from Pireaus, Athens. The reason it had been so relaxing was the fact that I had to buy a business class ticket of 52euro, since everything else was sold out. The first time I follow an advise in the Lonely Planet Guide and it screws up. I literally hate those guide books by now. I have found countless mistakes in all the once I've used. Mostly I double check, but this time I followed the advise of not buying my boat-ticket before it was sure to departure and found that only these exstremely exoensive tickets were left. But as I said it was nice, though not worth 52euros it was surtently possible to get a lot more sleep than outside "the ... read more

When I told my mother I was going to Athens, she asked me why! If there was one capital in Europe she absolutely didn't like it was that one. Maybe, she told me, it has the Acropolis, but the rest... I thought that was kind of a pesimistic idea of the European democracy's birthplace. I mean a city with such a history must have more than some ancient ruins on a hill-top. But I must admit that my mother was right. Athens is definetly not my favourite place for a vacation. The city seems almost sad. The houses build in a period not known for the greatest architecture and it is impossible to breath anything just slightly reminding you of fresh air. But there were other things in Athens. I finally got company again and the ... read more

Europe » Greece » Epirus » Ioannina August 1st 2005

Since I last wrote on the blog several days ago I've been really busy, travelling in Greece, climbing ancient monuments, reading fat books and partying. All shall be accounted for in the following blogs. Ioannina I crossed the border to Greece on the 29th of July. It was far more easy than expected. An hour later I stood at the bus-station in Ioannina where I found myself baking in the sun with my exstremely heavy bagpack. I think the reason it was so easy for me was my very handy EU passport. All my fellow travellers from the bus had to wait in the long line for non-EU citizens. I had no idea for accomondation that night. So I crisscrossed the city in search of three things; a hotel, an internet connection and Harry Potter. First ... read more

I'm at the moment in Ioannina, Greece, but before writing about returning to the European Union I wish to write a few thoughts down about Albania. I already told about Shkoder fastly, but now after having completed my Albanian experience for this time, I wish to tell what I discovered about the culture. Since I'm only a backpacker going fastly through I offcourse haven't digged down into the Albanian lifestyle and do not know much more than others about Albania. But here is what I found out. Language difficulties Firstly I noticed the language and was pretty fast trying to figure out what it came closest to. But honestly Albanian is a little bit of everything and still nothing like any other language I've heard. They speak as if they are mumbling, using sounds from the ... read more

I arrived rather early in the morning in Ulcinj, coming from Kotor. I had heard it should be easy to get a minivan to Shkoder from here. But the informations there were confusing. One person told me it left at one o'clock, another at 14.30, then one said 11 and finally someone told me four o'clock. As I was running around pretty swetty and tired, I believe I was noticed by more than one person, wherefore a guy in the end offered me a ride to Shkoder for 7 euros which I felt was rather cheap considering the long way. I went with him in his very hot car and I was almost baking on the backseat. We talked some, but mainly I just staired out the window at the very beautifull nature that is to ... read more

Arriving in Kotor two days ago, I met a rather strange woman at the busstation who constantly followed me, wanting me to accomondate at her place. She was extremely old and all dressed in black - looking a little bit like my images of the witch in the Little Red Riding Hood. I didn't get much of her very fast talk, but after long considerations and her constantly saying Stari Grad, Moda, Stari Grad, I and a Belgien guy chose to go with her. We came to a small apartment near the cathedral, where she immidiately started serving us coffee and once again saying moda moda. I had assumed it ment modern, but her place was far from that. The toilet was in a terrible condition, and on the one wall of the living room hang ... read more

I went to Dubrovnik early in the morning after a nice ecspresso and a sad good-bye to my two Mostar-companions. I had little interest in crisscrossing Dubrovnik, since I, even though having heard of it's beauties, was to affraid of another tourist hell. So as I arrived to the busstation I decided to go directly to my accomondation for the night and spend some time relaxing. The guy from the hostel came picking me up from the busstation and with great fear I found him sitting on a scooter, which is one vehicle I've promised myself after an accident two years ago never to get up to. So with my bagpack in one hand a bottle of water in the other and a long dress on I looked rather pale about the idea. He laughed and ... read more

I've been on my way for a time now. Currently, I'm in Kotor, but I would wish to give a little update on both Mostar and Dubrovnik. So to start with Mostar... Mostar I came after a sleepy busride from Split. I had really been looking forward to see the reconstructed bridge and the reunited city. But as I arrived to the famous bridge and found myself back in the tourist hell of Split I got rather down and went for a coke and a little break from the endless bazaar streching on both sites of the bridge. All these daytrippers from Dubrovnik almost breaking the bridge for the second time with there uncountable number of feet, legs, arms, cameras and convirtable marks. I know I myself am a tourist and one in the bunch and ... read more
