Before you ask, no, I didn't actually go to Alexanderplatz. But I did see a bunch of cool stuff - the trains, the train stations, the bars...and some historical stuff, Hitler and Stalin wandering around (they seemed pretty friendly, considering...). I also went to a pool party and nearly lost my bikini to a hungry pony. Yes, a pony. Yes, my bikini. No, I wasn't drunk. I had to spend about an hour riding a bike to and from this porno-pony-pool-party. I met a cute Scotsman named...er...something that sounds like "cuckold", but with a cough in the middle. I ate a [View Full Entry]

So, here I am in beauti...scenic...drab and grey Keflavík*. I've spent the last few hours at the airport, mostly peoplewatching, but also being bored, meeting Jesse the couchsurfer, running into Bjarki the former teacher-ish thing-guy, listening to him tell his 2 year old how ˝Daddy once saw Tinna puke because she was sooo hung over˝, et.c. Had Jesse taste Brennivín. He didn't like it. I sat next to Charlton Heston on the FlyBus. I could have sworn it was Heston if I didn't know he was dead. (Heston, that is, not the bus guy.) He was wearing a baseball cap with [View Full Entry]

T minus 17 days

 Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Reykjavík
So... InterRail pass - check! Flight reservation to Berlin - check! A teensy backpack - check! Money - ch...er...no, no checks for that one. But, hey, at least I managed to get the Evil Forces of Taxation to agree not to take my entire salary, but rather a small portion of it. Stupid tax people. It doesn't matter that the "overused discount" was so incredibly not my fault, but rather my employers' (since they pay the taxes directly) or that I can honestly not recall having any more money than before or after this supposed "crime". No, what matters is that [View Full Entry]

Crashy crashy!

 Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Reykjavík
So. Iceland is crap. Now is a good time to come though, since the krona is at an all-time low! What that means for us on the skerry is higher prices - the US dollar is now at around 80 krona - a few weeks ago it was around 60, so that's 30% right there. The euro is at 125 - bfore it was around 90. Over 30% there. What this means for me is a huge fucking increase in travel costs this summer (unless the euro dips again -please, oh please let it dip). I had written down info on [View Full Entry]

Ticket - check!

 Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Reykjavík
I just bought a ticket...and thus altered my original plan. I will now *gasp* skip Roskilde Festival. That's right, for the first time in six years I will miss Roskilde. I won't be going to Denmark at all. Instead - in the interest of saving money and time- I will fly directly to Berlin. I plan on hanging around eastern Germany for a bit, seeing the important Holocaust-related sights, jumping to Guben for the Plastinarium before rolling over to Prague to see commie-related things, Kutná Hora and eat weird cheesy things. From there it's on to Krakow for more Holo [View Full Entry]

Yes, it's that time of year again. The shortest day of the year is behind me (4 hours of "sunlight" thankyouverymuch) and before me I can feel better days. Days of working my ass off (I have a job now. Innit great?), planning, scrimping and complaining about the costof everything. And after all that, in a mere 180 days - travelling! Since last summer's little...excursion...didn't quite go as planned, I'll have to rectify that next summer. I will, however, leave my schedule more flexible than last time. So far all I have planned is Roskilde (as usual), Copenhagen and Amsterdam. I'll [View Full Entry]

Crushed

 Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Reykjavík
I have a crush. I was struggling with myself the whole last day, trying to find a loophole, any excuse to stay. Secretly hoping the flight would be overbooked, there would be a terrible storm, they'd detain me. Anything. I stood in line for an hour and a half, surreptitiously glancing at the Icelandair ticket office, knowing that even if I did walk over there, even if I could cancel the ticket, they'd put the refund back on the creditcard, instead of my pocket, which is where I needed it to be if I were to have any chance of actually [View Full Entry]

Amsterdam. The city. Only, it doesn't feel like a city. Or rather, it feels like a city in the same sense that ReykjavĂk feels like a city. It feels like a small town that somebody has forced into being a city. A small-tow-cum-city in every respect; the narrow streets, the relaxed atmosphere, the not-quite-small-town-mentality. The feeling that even if you lived here all your life, you still wouldn't know all its secrets, that on the very last day of your existence you'd discover something wonderful. The fact that I'm writing this from a room two floors above street level doesn't seem [View Full Entry]

Yes, in A'dam there be some funky-ass people! I'm still staying with the same host, who was kind enough to let me stay until monday or thursday, since I'll be able to grab a plane home then. Note the deliberate use of the word able as opposed to the entirely different word willing. I don't want to go! I still have to make a decision - soon - since the cheaper plane home leaves tomorrow, and the slightly-more-expensive-but -much-simpler-since-I-won't-have-to-take-a-fucking-train-to-Eiselfichen-or-whatever-the-hell-it's- called-why-can't-they-fly-from-Amsterdam-the-stupid-fuc [View Full Entry]
