Finally a day with myself! Don't get me wrong; i enjoyed the company of Lisa, Oryoon and Aaron but there are just some sights and some places that i want to go with me and myself. Duolun Culture Street is one of these places. I woke up later than usual as I've decided that I've had enough of the same free breakfast. i washed up and headed off towards the metro station. I bought myself a shoujuabing, 手抓饼, at a store next to the station. It's bacon & chez wrapped in a flaky pastry. yummy and only 6Y! the walk to Duolun Street from the station took about 20minutes or so. Walking through Doulun Culture Street you would see bronze statues of the great writers and artists of old Shanghai. I know little about them and ... read more

After Lisa left, it was as if some thing was missing between Oryoon and I. We did not head out together as she was headed for shopping along Nanjing East Road and I was headed for the Bund. The Bund was well, a tad bit disappointing as it was all hoarded up for some sort of renovation, no doubt in preparation for the Shanghai Expo in less than a month's time. I walked along the street next to the Bund and pretended to admire the architecture. I seriously know nuts about architecture besides the fact that i went for an interview at the Building and Architecture Faculty and made a fool out of myself years ago. All i know is the buildings look nice and i want to take a picture of them. As i wandered ... read more

The slow train arrived in Shanghai around midnight the day before and i decided that i will stay in the hostel today to catch up on sleep, laundry and this blog. I have a room mate but she was sleeping when i arrived and she woke up before i did. It was major washing for me and the fact that there is a dryer in the hostel helped alot as Shanghai is raining! I met my room mate later in the day, her name's Lisa and she's from the UK. She has been traveling around the world with Gap Adventures and was in Shanghai because her Tibet trip with Gap Adventures was cancelled. We made plans to visit the Yu Gardens the next day. Later in the night a new room mate joined us. Her name's ... read more

It's my last day in Xiamen today. Yes, many entries are missing, I'm hoping to fill in the blanks when I have settled in Shanghai. I spent much of today wasting time in cafès. I woke up and headed out for my poison. One of my roomies was out sitting on the bench outside our room and I planted my ass down there. He has a telephone interview later and is looking for a quiet place around the area. I quickly mentioned the cafe the young girl told me about on bai he Road. As we sat around and conversed, my eyes were roaming around the common area. Another roomie stepped out of the shower and our conversation quickly ended as Roomie 1 headed to take over the bathroom. As soon as Roomie 1 came out ... read more

The whole point of my trip to China is the train rides but it is really ridiculous to take a train from Shantou to Xiamen as it goes around in one big loop. So i opted for the bus which costs 95Y and 4hours. The bus leaves at 12noon and 3pm daily and i opted for the 12noon ride to get to Xiamen while there is still day light. Unfortunately that means that my Aunt will have to head to the airport alone instead of having me there with her at check in as we have planned. I booked a bed at url=http://www.hostelworld.com/availability.php/XiaMen-Baijiacun-International-Youth-Hostel/Xiamen/39355 BaiJiaCun Youth Hostel and took a taxi towards it once i arrived at the Xiamen bus station. The driver got a lil lost at BaiJiaCun and we called the hostel for directions. I ... read more

I tried searching for the proper name of this bridge but i only found 1 flicker entry and a yahoo search of the name from the flicker entry gave me the yangtze river instead... So.. from the flicker entry: Syantse Bridge. I can't say i know much or even anything at all about this bridge but i saw it and i loved it. So quoting somewhere off the web: 'Each pier of the Syantse Bridge has a history of hundreds of years and the whole bridge was first built in the year 1171 in China’s Song Dynasty. It was built as a float bridge linked by 84 huge boats and beside two banks of the immense River Han at that time. For the late hundreds of years, the reconstruction and decoration has not been stopped. Till Ming ... read more

The next morning I woke up feeling really good; physically and emotionally that is. I guess finally being in my grandma’s hometown makes me feel that I have achieved a goal. Today’s itinerary is to visit some places of interest and my grandma’s village/house when she was still in China. Frankly, I was not so keen on the other sights and sounds other than to go to ‘ng chu hang’ .. so I am gonna skip like 90% of the hoohaas at Chaozhou and dive straight in to the 1 sight that I enjoyed and the village itself... My Aunt had gone to the market with Xipeng's wife, so Xipeng was stuck with entertaining me. He gave me a bowl of Lotus seed sweet soup and drove off on his bike to buy me a 'zhang ... read more

During my CNY reunion dinner my Aunt made a comment about having me over to Shantou when the school holidays hit if i have not found a job by then. The immediate thought that flew into my mind was 'Wow! I'll be dead if i have not found a job in one month's time!' And here I am now, standing at the immigration queue in Shantou. I suppose this is a good thing; i would not have stayed with my relatives if my Aunt was not with me. Afterall, I have never met or spoke with any them.. I mean... i knew they existed but I did not know their names, age or how many of them where there. They, my relatives, are the kids of my late grandma's younger brother. Which also means that, yes, ... read more

I walked out of my room while the sky is still dark. I could not see clearly as the morning fog hinders my vision. Sleepily I went to the reception area of the hostel and waited for someone to pick me up for the prebooked Panda tour. A mini-van drove up and i was told that that was my ride. In the mini-van was a asian looking young boy who asked if i speak. English. I said i do and we chatted a little. He's Trung, Vietnamese by birth but has been residing in Australia. He wore a cute lil hat with ear warmers that was designed to look like a Panda. Yes, he was totally in the mood and getting hyped up for the Panda tour. We arrived at the Chengdu Panda Research Centre after ... read more

ahh my 1st train ride in China =) it is not as bad as i thought it would be; in fact the train i took from Kunming to Chengdu was pretty decent. I took a lower bunk bed in the hard sleeper. a lady in her mid twenties took the bed directly opposite mine while 2 older gents took the ones above us. i was shy. i was the stranger who looked like a local but spoke no local dialect and was reading a English novel. i pretended to read sometimes but was secretly eavesdropping on their conversation. It wasn't easy doing so; they were speaking in a dialect that i could not even remotely understand. I was paranoid too after hearing horror stories from my cousin about how snatch thieves come and grab your bag ... read more
