Ever gotten bit by a monkey? I am now one of the lucky few that can mark that off of their things to achieve… Luckily the bite didn’t puncture my skin or I’d either be in a hospital, dead, or on a plane headed towards the cure for rabies. Did I mention most monkeys here also carry herpes? Because they do… Aoife and I were walking the back roads headed towards our house. I noticed a couple of monkeys on the side of a clearing around the corner and turned around to Aoife asking if she thought maybe we should turn back. (This specific area is notoriously known for monkeys that like to chase you, bite you, and steal your shit. How convenient that we only came to know of this fact AFTER the monkey incident.) ... read more

The more I travel, the more I realize that the little possibilities you come across are everything. Those little moments of chance that end up bringing so much more than you ever imagine, make your travels. Earlier in the day yesterday, we had passed by some students on a megaphone blasting advertisements for a dance and song show with “psycho-rock music” going on that night at Tippa Hall. Tickets were only 100 rupees (roughly two dollars), and we were highly skeptical of how good the show was going to be, but it was something to do on a Saturday night, so we bought them. This being my third full week of giardia, I’m not really feeling too hot, and the kids at the daycare keep giving me whatever diseases they have. I’ve had two fevers in ... read more

News: 1. So... the Lion Man's in jail or in the hospital, as is the word on the street. He jumped at the Dalai Lama apparently during HH's (his holiness's or so the tibetans say) teaching. Word to the wise: Don't do this, you will be thrown in the slammer, contract a rare disease, then end up in the hospital. Lord knows I do NOT want to be in the hospital again. 2. I am feeling SOOOO much better. It's amazing. I will never take my health for granted again. 3. The Dalai Lama's birthday is this coming Wednesday, July 6th. Everyone should come out for the extremely large party that will be ensuing. I hear there's dancing ; ) 4. While I was getting fluid shoved back into my body via needle at the hospital, ... read more

On Saturday morning, we packed our bags and began our journey to the pool of nectar, or so the city, Amritsar, is named after. I had already been sick since Thursday but felt much better Saturday morning, so I decided it would be fine if I still went. (How can you miss out on a city with a name like that?) Aoife and I were pretty much cursing the quiche we had shared two days before after the bus began its journey down the mountain. Amritsar basically contains three temples, two Hindi temples and one Sikh… and that’s pretty much it. These temples, however sick you are, are most definitely worth visiting. After checking into our hotel, we decided we should probably go eat as we hadn’t had anything for around six hours, the length ... read more

Yesterday’s 103-degree fever has melted into normality again upon waking this morning, that is normality with the additional feelings of dizziness and after-sickness weakness. It never fails that I get sick in my travels. When my parents used to send my sisters and I back to china for schooling during the summers, I would get so sick I would end up in the hospital with an IV stuck in my arm, forcing fluids into my diarrhea/vomit debilitated body. No worries, friends and family, I’ll be taking good care of myself. My house mommy is also the cutest, sweetest woman in the world and is currently making me and my other sick housemate, Nora, noodles as we watch 500 days of summer amidst a background of stormy weather outside. 24-hour bug? I really hope so. Saturday started ... read more

Hello all from a rainy rainy monsoon day in Dharamsala. Today is the start of the monsoon season, so get your umbrellas out or make the decisive decision to just not wear clothing. Either way you will get dirty and wet. If you're naked at least you won't have to wash your clothes though, right? There's always a silver lining. After finding out yesterday that the daycare center we were supposed to be volunteering at didn't actually need us to start until this Saturday, Aoife and I wandered around aimlessly for some fun in the sun, but soon met up with Ariel and Nora for lunch at, believe it or not, an Italian restaurant. For 120 rupees (roughly three dollars) I got four large servings of manicotti. Holy hell I was full. While chilling out, waiting ... read more

Stepping off the plane into Dharamsala was a breath of fresh air. Literally. I am not going to mind this 70 degree weather. Goodbye swass. After we grabbed our bags, both of which one of my wheels had been knocked off of (great start), we climbed into a jeep to head up the mountain into McLeod Ganj. So, you know when danger makes you laugh due to that oh so fun adrenaline rush? That was pretty much me the whole hour up the extremely narrow cliff side roads our vehicle was speeding up. It is a longgggggg way down the mountainside, let me tell ya, and we were nearly only a foot away. I'm sure our driver thought I was on drugs. We arrived at the path of our homestay with our luggage and began the ... read more

It rained last night. Waking up this morning was like experiencing a small piece of heaven. The 72 degree weather that occurred all night was the perfect accessory for a good nights sleep, which was needed from the busyness of the previous days proceedings. Thursday was another really fucking hot day... I'm so glad we choose these days to spend all day in the lovely sun. The Lotus Temple was our first destination. Built in 1986 for people of all religious faiths to come and worship God, this Baha'i temple is amazing. Its architectural genius has won many awards, and the pictures I took definitely do not do it justice so definitely google pictures of this beauty. Do it. So, according to our driver, Anil, India has four different areas or sectors. There's Old Delhi, phase ... read more

Swass- an intermingling of the words sweaty and ass to fully describe the extent of the heat here in India. ex. Have you got swass? I feel the swass coming on... Hey, can I get a picture of your swass for my swass in India album? At night, the temperature drops to around the 90's, leading the people to come out to converse and the children to come out to play. Here, people don't go to bed until pretty late since it's much more pleasant to be out at night, and therefore do not rise until around 10 or 11am, which is when the shops begin to open up. Michael, my current roommate, Aoife, my soon to be Dharamsala roommate, Vincenza, and I decided a trek out to the nearest mall was in order for some ... read more

It's currently 6:30 am here and I'm staring out my window into delhi as the most amazing cool breeze wafts over me. It's much nicer in the mornings when everyone is asleep and the midday heat hasn't taken over. People warn you of the intense heat, but no amount of such warnings can prepare you for heat like this. This is the kind of heat that when you step outside, your breath is stolen from you immediately and you must remind yourself that inhaling keeps you alive. This is the kind of heat that causes you to never ever feel cool no matter where you are, the kind of heat where only 1 liter bottles of water are sold verses our wimpy american 16 fl oz bottles. We take cold showers here partially to feel clean, ... read more
