Today we had breakfast and although it was drizzling we set off for the zoo! It was great fun - we especially enjoyed the gorillas which we were able to see from inside and the spider monkeys who were full of fun and energy. We heard a talk about the lemurs while they were being fed. After morning tea we went back to Stacey and Joseph's house for lunch. We left early for the airport as it was raining - good job we did - we passed two accidents - sole occupants obviously driving too fast for the wet slippery roads! Had time for a tea and muffin to share before boarding our flight on time. Flight was good until 15 mins from whangarei - strong winds forced our pilot to take long and steady descent ... read more

Woken up by cats running up and down the corridor! Stacey had to go to work this morning so we had breakfast with Joseph and set out for Hamilton town centre - parked at Benjy's Pie Lab and walked to the museum - it was quite interesting - lots of video shows about the maori queen's ascension to the throne and about her death. But the best thing was the coffee and muffin - the best service all holiday and the muffin was served warm with yogurt and chocolate sauce - we shared it between us and it was delicious! Stayed for ages talking then walked along river for a while and on to Sky City Casino to watch the gambling - again!! Joseph explained to Leigh about all the ins and outs while I was ... read more

Went for a walk before breakfast then packed up and got ready to check out at 10-am. Left luggage at the motel to pick up later and walked to the Quay to catch the Ferry to Devonport. Quick 10 minute ride to Devonport - went to the Info Centre - a dutch gentleman gave us a leaflet on a self guided hour walk through Devonport. It was a really good idea - it pointed out all the places of interest and not too far. Back to the shops for lunch - found a new cafe opened two weeks ago by an English couple, served specialty teas - drank three big cups and both of us had jacket potato and salad for lunch. Took the ferry back to the Quay and then to Brittomart and slow walk ... read more

Early walk this morning - to the Quay and Viaduct back through Brittomart (new train and bus station) - saw the trains - really clean and security guards and plenty of food places open and bustling with atmosphere. Walked up Queen St and then back again - old buildings interspersed with new! Back for breakfast! Then walked down to the Ferry for the Harbour Cruise - was very interesting and we could sit down! The coffee and muffin - white chocolate and raspberry - were delicious. Told us about a storage facility where the boat owners call them up on the phone to organise a trip out on their boat - they get their boat out of storage, fuel it up and its ready to go - then when they have finished with it, they ring ... read more

Went for a last quick walk through Geraldine - very sad to leave here! Packed up and left for Christchurch. The roads got busier and busier as we got closer to Christchurch Airport. Arrived early so had time for tea and gingernuts before boarding plane. They actually offered us an earlier flight but we declined as did not want to arrive too early at our motel in Auckland! Flight was really good nice views. Got shuttle from Auckland to motel - cost us $32 for the two of us from door to door! Quest on Eden Terrance is an apartment type complex all self-contained and no other facilties. Our room was really nice on the 5th floor with large bathroom containing washing machine and tumble dryer - kitchen, bed and dining table all in one room ... read more

Decided to spend the day in Geraldine and not use the car! Before breakfast went on the Pioneer Walk which went up and down hills for about an hour. Saw some interesting homes and lots of beautiful roses! Walked to Geraldine and went shopping - tasted cheese, saw chocolate, ate ice-cream - visited the rose gardens, walked through the Domain and by the pool, then back to the motel for lunch through the Rhododendron Dell! After lunch left Leigh relaxing and took another walk to the Domain and back again - talked Leigh into coming for a swim! It was heated to 27 degrees and we were the only ones in the pool! swam 30 lengths. Walked on the the Vintage car and tractor museum - very hot! More ice-cream then back to motel - 22,000 ... read more

Walk before breakfast - only 6,000 steps! Had air conditioning on all night as it was so hot! Set off after breakfast towards Lake Tekapo. Saw the signpost for Mount John - only a few kms off the main road, so headed off there - steep windy route up and around the mountain but arrived at the top to the Observatory! This detour is a must! There is even a coffee shop at the top - we had coffee and chatted to the man who made the coffee who takes photographs of happenings in the sky (can't think of the name) - they are beautiful. They do offer a guided tour if you want - I would go if I were you! Went to Lake Tekapo this seemed a lovely place, the lake was beautiful, and ... read more

Today we walked before breakfast and then packed a picnic for our trip to see Mount Cook. It was a beautiful drive, what fantastic views of Lake Pukaki! Got stopped by farmer moving his sheep - there were a lot of them and we gradually trickled our way through. Took 1-hr from Twizel to get to Mount Cook National Park. Fantastic views of the mountains with snow on the top. Took Kea walk which was supposed to be 1-hr one-way - it was misty and the rain came down, so Leigh turned back after 30mins - I thought it would be ages to the end point so did not take the camera - then another 10 mins on, there was the view of the Mueller Glacier and the remains of the water holes caused by the ... read more

Today packed up and left Alexandra. First had long walk along Clutha River and back to motel for breakfast - bit of a hurry getting out before 10 but we managed! Dene was a good host! $105 per night here. Drove to Wanaka - parked down by the lake - huge tourist area - walked into the shops and had morning coffee and muffin watching the people go by. Plenty to do if you like outdoor activities especially good for the snow! Walked down by the lake and then headed off towards Twizel. Stopped for lunch along the way and talked for ages to an English couple who were also touring the South Island - we compared notes! Drove into Twizel and was a bit disappointed - a newish town with not much character including the ... read more

Today went for a walk before breakfast along the Clutha River - a lovely 14-km walk from Alexandra to Clyde - we parked up and walked about 4-kms one way and then back for breakfast - total of 11,500 steps. Went to Clyde - a little old fashioned village and took a look at the hydro dam while we were there - fascinated by the colour of the water - a really deep turquoise blue. Took lots of photos and also walked through the village with old buildings. Leigh went into the hotel which had bed and breakfast advertised for $50 for a couple per night - cheap! Back to motel for r and r and then to info centre for postcards - wrote postcards, went for a swim or two and chatted to some english ... read more
