Galapagos Islands

We flew to the islands from Quito a quaint colonial city with an abundance of churches each with more gold than the previous one. It was a pity we only had one day in our luxury hotel but as always there was an incident. This time it was John falling down the stairs of our two storey hotel room. Suzanne knew not to giggle when she saw the colour and size of his ankle. Bravely he soldiered

Lake Titicaca

A ten hour journey from Cusco to Puno took us through The Andes visiting more Inca sites on the way. We visited a lot of markets along the way and bought yet more bargains In this area most of the buildings are unfinished to avoid building taxes due on completion of the house. It all looks very messy. Our hotel in Puno was on the edge of lake Titicaca the highest navigable lake in the world at

On the trail of the Incas

Our base for this trip was Cusco which is at 3400 metres above sea level so we both suffered a bit of altitude sickness. The local brew to combat altitude sickness is coca tea which is available everywhere. Suzanne said it was barely palatable and drank it like medicine. Cusco is a charming although poor city which is heaving with cars tourists and street vendors. The combination of high altit

Up the Amazon

An even more middle of nowhere experience bus canoe and trek to the camp. Our home is a thatched roof lodge no outside walls or windows just a mud wall between us and our neighbours. There is no electricity so we have candles kerosene lamps and torches thanks to Lucy for her wind up torch and of course ecoloos. Unsurprisingly it is very wet hot and humid were in the wet

Right in the heart of Brazil miles from anywhere and in the wet season. Good news it only rained one day but mossies galore. Deet and bite zapper doing the trick but have to wear long sleeves and trousers which was a slight problem as Suzannes long sleeved T shirt had to be fished out of dirty washing and Johns only long sleeved shirt was his going out shirt.
Crossing by three buses and three lakes through spectacular scenery. Although it was a long day it was well worth it with green lakes and blue lakes fjords and tall trees growing out of near vertical rocks. First experience of horse flies Deet 1flies 0 The good day continued with a room upgrade in Bariloche suite with lake views from two sides. Day finished with BBQ restaurant and Malbe

A private tour with charming Brazilian guide Fabiano. Started on the Argentinian side with a little train ride to the falls. It was heaving with coachloads of tourists an invasion of our space until we remembered that we were also tourists. First surprises the Iguazu river is huge several kilometres wide but shallow with hundreds of little islands and it was surrounded by dense ju

A terrible thunderstorm overnight meant we had to get up even earlier than intended so that the estancia 4x4 could drive us the 5 miles of mud track to the main road. Pick up car was waiting and we arrived at Buenos Aires airport at 08.00 for a 10.20 flight. Then it all went wrongWe knew to wait at gate 4 for our flight and assumed that the seats next to gate 5 were for gate 4 how wrong we we

Good news Bariloche airport now open most days so we had a direct flight back to Buenos Aires instead of a 5 hour bus journey plus a flight from Neuquen.Picked up from BA by a rally driver driving at breakneck speeds to the Estancia del Ombo in Areco. The last 5 miles was a dirt track where smarty pants lost the bottom of his car He left it on side of track to pick up after dropping us off.

Beautiful Swissstyle overlooked glaciercovered perfectly shaped volcano Osorno which has been dormant for over 100 years unlike a nearby volcano which was belching out white ash changing our travel plans for later. We had one day trip to Chiloe island which has high unemployment and alcoholism and precious little for tourists. A 12 hour bus ride for little reward. Our first disappointment mad

This was a long stressful day The camp was five hours from nearest airport Punta Arenas bus was due to leave at 10.0 which was cutting it fine for a 16.30 flight but it was made worse by a latearriving American who hadnt even started packing at ten. After a hairy ride we arrived at airport at 15.45 pushed our way through queue while John got told off by airport attendant and Suzanne almos

All power from water and sun everything recycled and all human waste composted eco poos as they came to be known. Each dome was quite luxurious with very large comfortable bed wood burning stove bathroom and balcony overlooking the Torres four granite towers formed millions of years ago.Unfort

Frozen Planet doesn39t come near to the reality of a glacier but still expected David Attenborough to pop up any minute Crampons on our shoes made us feel like real explorers until we saw how easily the guides moved across the ice.
