Arrived late (plane delays) to our quaint B&B on the fringe of the French Quarter of New Orleans. New Orleans is loaded with history and the French Quarter in particular is very vibrant with there being many competing restaurants and bars with live music and they celebrate almost everything due I suspect to their diverse cultural heritage; and I thought Australia was multicultural. This week there were celebrations for the running of the bulls in Pamlona with simulated staged action in the streets. Took in a number of tours, French Quarter, Mississippi river boat cruise on last stream driven paddle boat (albeit diesel fuelled) and a grand plantation homestead in the style of a Gone with the Wind movie. New Orleans is very flat and swampy with the Mississippi river cutting a very deep path through ... read more

Our B&B was perfectly positioned to take full advantage of the incredible views of Montego Bay and the cruise ships that slide by, but alas, no picture perfect sunsets presented. We were lucky enough to get a room upgrade as we were the only tennants during our stay and we were well looked after. The accommodation was the best of our trip and the fruit platter entree to breakfast was outstanding. Re my earlier comment about mangoes, I've found the best mangoes in the Caribbean; probably the world; they hang from a tree in the backyard of the B&B at 13 Cornish Road Montego Bay. Attraction: Proximity to Hip street and it's restaurants and bars and Dr. Caves beach. Doctor Caves beach is only a couple of hundred metres long but has a deeper and more ... read more

Arrived Ochos Rios midday by overland bus from Kingston - nice bus and trip with the road very narrow and mountainous. I have no idea how the driver did it. The hand on the horn approaching every corner had a very clear message - get out of the way. With a cruise ship in the harbour on arrival I knew we were going to be up against it (crowds) when visiting the Dunne's River Falls; didn't count on the whole of Jamaica starting school holidays two days earlier than scheduled. On the bright side we were able to get lost among the crowd to not be too much prey to the ever present souvenir hawkers. The falls climb was good although Lesia was not so sharing in my enthusiasm. The cruise ship left allowing us (we ... read more

Port of Spain is basically closed on weekends but took advantage of low crowds to tour city centre; Brian Lara Promenarde and Queens Park, Savanna, a huge green space that dominates Port of Spain. Tried the local foods, Roti, Doubles and reputedly the best Bake and Shark from Richards at Macarus Bay. In retropect shouldn't have sampled as many of the sides/sauces on offer; hot hot, hot; but very good.... read more

Spent 3 days Grande Riviere; an isolated fishing village 2.5 hours in the north of Trinidad; main attraction - giant leather back turtle breeding season. Went on a night tour of the nesting on the beach right outside our accommodation; only infra red light allowed so no pictures. Lucky enough to see early turtle hatchlings pop up and fight their way to sea against the awaiting vultures and dogs etc. - pretty tough. ... read more

Accommodation on the beach; again. A little more rustic but management great; very accommodating with their computors/internet etc. managed to arrive on another public holiday like Antigua and very busy for first day. Weather still holding; there are tropical showers but these are a bessing to cool things down. Discovered Pigeon Point (right next door) the last day of our stay - just as well as we may not have ventured further. Pigeon Point is another picture perfect beach place; part of the Bucco marine park. Next day (travelling day) engulfed by wet weather and thought we might not make our short flight to Trinidad. ... read more

Ground floor studio apartment at Worthing Beach very good; 1metre to an Elvis guitar shaped swimming pool and another 10 metres to steps leading to beach or into the ocean at high tide. Barbados appears a little more developed than Antigua but the people no less friendly; there are a zillion roads, most unmarked, we got lost several times. Most tourists we have met have been Canadian, probably a consequence of the GFC; the only ones that can afford to travel. Activities: Went to a cutural music/dance show (Bajan Roots & Rythm). Lesia has photos; great night and the RUM punches flowed freely. Visited Mount Gay for a Rum factory tour and needless to say the Rum flowed freely. Oistins on a Friday night is a must do; they have a massive fish fry; I had ... read more

Antigua, what can I say. If any place lived up to a post card then this is it.. Lesia better now and sun burn is more of an issue. Sunday tour of the Island culimating with a visit to English harbour and then Shirly Heights to sample the fine scenery and steel pan music was a high light. The management at the REX resort where we stayed put on a meet and greet cocktail party the last night of our stay; an invitation too good to refuse. The food, drink and music went down a treat and we managed to meet the locals and other visitors that we would otherwise probably not interacted with; a very good evening. ... read more

Overnight flight to Florida to pick up rental car early. Bleary-eyed confronted multi-lane freeways and cloverleafs around Airport; interesting as nav-lady didn't operate from the beginning due to under cover car park; we survived. Drove all day - first to Key West then back and up further to Vero beach; many highway police and Sherrif cars; but managed to avoid. Nice Motel accommodation and people mostly very pleasant and helpful. Next day off to Kennedy Space Centre - full day; good. Left next day early to Miami for flights to Antigua; lucky as I managed to take the wrong ramp onto the Florida turn-pike; it was 33 miles just to turn around and come back.... Unhappy Jan! Well they did say to bring the car back empty - I think we drove in on flumes. ... read more
