We parked in Gladstone St opposite the Craigo Mills home to the Omeo dance studio started by Roslyn Crisp. We were after the best Turkish pizza in Sydney at Saray on Enmore Rd. “I thought she looked like spastic puppet pulling her own strings or like she was doing some kind of epileptic tai chi.” Brett searched for words to express how he hated Ros’ performance in a kind of conversational way. He knew that Paul was on his side as the beer was passed his way. “I don’t class that as dance, it was more like mime. I think of dance as having some sort of grace, but that was just ugly.” Though my response to Danse (1) was different, I could not disagree with the descriptions of Paul and Brett. I first came ... read more

Wonderful Wollongong Australasia » Australia » New South Wales » Wollongong » Wollongong By valeriavineMay 27th 2007Valeria VineI am sometimes struck by just how beautiful it is. Cooled to the bone stillness, body milted and shed of the day's slough weighing our clothes to the floor. Does a tongue start behind the teeth and end somewhere beetween the thighs, the whole parched length of it? feel the inside of you dry up along the outside of me. I s... read more

A sea of red cloth made my hands look so small as I tried to fold it. To arrange the chaotic undulations into neat lines. Each time I halved, it multiplied. Grasping and clutching but never find the end. It grew beneath my hands and I could not push it away. I spread my arms wide to surround it only to be surrounded. I pulled it only to find it advancing. I tried to be bigger than it and was lost in its infinity. No! I must fold and divide! No! I must bring ends together! No! I must contain! No! I woke and heard the door seal shut. Everard’s bags gone, save one. I wanted to stay awake to say goodbye…. I opened the balcony doors to see him enter a car. A woman ... read more

The knock sounded three time. One for the meek, one for the bold and one for the story that's about to unfold…..Everard stood in the doorway surrounded by his luggage for Peru and his travels onward. “Oh my god! Do you think you have enough luggage?!” JJ started helping him drag the bags inside our apartment. “I know. I’ve been shopping and hopefully I can offload this on my father in Italy.” He looked sheepishly at the small mountain in our hallway. He pointed at the groaning backpack against the wall. ‘This ones for you. I’ll arrange for Marianne to come and pick it up when she gets to Buenos Aires.’ The night was still young, in fact premature by argentine standards. JJ swathed in her moo moo interrogated Everard about his travel plans to ... read more

We walked laden with backpacks through the old city to the part where we would catch our evening ferry back to Buenos Aires. Deserted and still the streets felt like a movie set. My backpack was small and dense like carrying a sleeping child. JJ towered by my side. “Where’d you get the doll?” I was holding it my hand so as not squash it in my dense pack. “Oh some guy gave it to me, when I saved hm from his hotel room” I passed her the doll and she took it with curiosity. “Pretty heavy for a little thing” “Yeh, wonder what it’s stuffed with.” I took the doll and lifted its little red floral skirt to reveal the neatly stitched seams of her legs with shoes that were permanently sewn to her ... read more

South America April 4th 2007

We arrived in Montevideo by bus from Colonia and were met by Diana and Muñeca and in theory Julio....but we had to do a little hunting to find him. It is Semana Santa (Easter) so everything is pretty quiet as businesses close down for the holiday, though I imagine that Montevideo never really reaches the kind of bustle of Buenos Aires. And indeed this is the charm of Montevideo. Uruguay only has a population of 3.5 million and Montevideo houses 1.3 million. Time has slowed for Semana Santa and what little movement there is on the street stands out in contrast in the still cityscape. Mate drinkers in doorways, the few small businesses which have remained open, a lady crossing the street, someone fixing their car. Diana and Muñeca are stying in an apartment "Palacio ... read more
