Yes. As of two days ago I have declared war on all cockroaches. Whose population, despite the one I saw on the hospital grounds today (wow, I never realized how disgusting that sounds), was entirely concentrated in my apartment. Urgent Communique: Amass armies at 11pm, at the sink entrance to the kitchen. After the Massacre of the Fridge last Saturday, we’re to wage a full on attack. Sneaking by the spray laid on the floor, we plan to overwhelm the attacker when she is too tired from the day’s activities. -Head Roach I can’t say to any effect WHO won the war. Actually , I think that’s a lie. I won the battle, but they certainly won the war. I’ve never though myself as a squeamish, jump-on-the-chair screaming kind of gal, but when I saw a ... read more

“So. What is your name?” Stacey Waterman. “And What are you doing in Israel?” There’s a pause. I’m looking at this formidable Israeli policewoman, the fifth of what seems to be a never ending line of interrogators. I’m bleary-eyed, ridiculously exhausted from what is verging on a 20 hour trip from Montreal to here, Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. I really don’t know what answer to give her, being forewarned that Israeli security does not take quite a fancy to internationals choosing to work in the West Bank or Gaza, areas that they stubbornly refuse to accept as Palestine. I had already told a string of half-truths, not quite feeling comfortable to tell any outright lies, but trying to keep the purpose of my stay light. I was to be spending the next six to ... read more

I sit here, silently rubbing my temples, trying to coax the sheer volume of stuff I've learned, seen, and done over the past couple of days. This is what I love about traveling. One day seems like a week, one week seems like a month.... I'll get back to you on what a month feels like once I've completed it. Yes, so I've been in Nablus exactly a week. Even if I posted three entries a couple days ago, there is still such an overwhelming amount of news... maybe I should space it out, so as to tide you all over when (if) my life gets more boring. As the White Stripes wrote (I know, deep), split it up into manageable acorns... SO. Last Thursday, as I apparently logged in my journal, was a ridiculously Awesome ... read more

I suppose now we're getting to the crux of things. I'm in Nablus (Finally), actually even writing this from the center I'm working at. I really should be working- I have a 15 page project proposal due on Monday. Well, I suppose, first things first. What did come first? ...I arrived at the center, and finally met Bilal, the director. He immediately put me at ease, the first day jitters completely disappeared. Within the hour, we're hurtling off to this little town near Nablus to do the certification for this volunteer training program they had there over the last couple of days. We managed to make it there in record time (10-15 minutes), thanks to a gate/checkpoint that they only recently opened, managing to avoid the previously 45 minutes drive around that it took in prior ... read more

Chapter 2. I had previously decided that Chapters made the whole thing seem much more dramatic. However, they kind of lose their potency when you only have two. But no matter. I proceed to wander around Tel Aviv. I find, while traveling, that there are no excuses for not exploring. In India, I was walking around for a week with infected lymphnodes. In Argentina, I was traveling for a month with pneumonia. So, after chatting with Jacko, the manager (obviously not his name, but I realized, shocked, that the only word I knew in Hebrew was "Shalom" and that it was NOT a language I could easily pick up), I wandered to the beach to see the sunset, and again, was unworried by the fact that I didn't pay a single bit of attention as to ... read more

I Have Arrived. I had never previously thought that any journey could be so harrowing. It was like a Spielberg epic- laughing, crying, yelling... actually though, the laughing was more to keep from crying, and the crying didn't involve so many tears as angry rants... so I suppose it was just stress-induced ...angry stress. Chapter 1. SO. I start the long journey, as always, by sleeping through my alarm clock. Thankfully, back up fail safe alarm number three worked (thanks Jess). Follow 10-12 hour (who knows/cares at that point) trip to Jordan. I wrote down at the Amman (Jordan) airport: "I'm mostly disconcerted-- generally the flight is what throws me into a panic, but I'm blaze. BLAZE. (with a french accent on the e, not like i'm on fire)... Come ON, Stace. Look outside. It's all...desert-y ... read more

It. is. COLD. This month has been a bit ridiculous. Funny, because originally I dreaded coming back to Montreal a little bit, because class just never seemed to be enough to fill up the hours. That, I will most adamantly admit, was dead wrong. Getting the apartment set up, hosting six people, catching up with what seems to be an endless stream of old friends (I still haven't seen everyone), dealing with various dramas, arranging classes, attending classes, the what is an actual endless stream of work: readings, papers, my upcoming midterm (which, coincidentally, is two days after AUC starts school again), arranging internships... I still have to figure out my transfer credits. blarg. Since this is a travelblog, I suppose I can delve mostly into the aspects of reverse culture shock. This was the main ... read more

Being back sucks much more than expected. Perhaps my expectations were too high? I'm really not wallowing; I'm just stating a fact. However, I've been kept very busy moving in, seeing people, and having hordes of visitors, which has been great. Stacey ... read more

This past weekend was the last one left. Well 'last one'. However, if you think about it... yeah. We now have next weekend: American Thanksgiving week after: Eid break (a big holiday) week after: finals this is ridiculous! What happened to everything! Well... hospital time took up a good portion of my trip, I feel, but I'm not talking about anything medical this post because yeah: there is nothing wrong with me. I feel like I'm tempting the gods everytime I write something to that effect. But yes. Thanksgiving we get a day off, so many people are going somewhere, Eid break is a week long holiday and definitely a lot of people are leaving, and then finals weekend is not so conducive to the 'let's hang out' as much as 'let's rant and stress in ... read more

The best revenge is good livin. So to combat the ongoing 'Pharoah's revenge' in the form of the 10 plagues of Egypt that have been unleashed upon me, I have to decided to go with the flow, and therefore take control of my very bizarre destiny here in Cairo. I have made the executive decision to drop all but one of my classes, the one being on Sunday. Strangely enough, this decision has made me more productive and ambitious. I might stay in another of my classes, just because it's easy peasy and no one cares if you don't show up to class, which is my plan so I can travel Egypt, now that I only have one measly month left here (ridiculous! where has the time gone!) I went home. for two weeks. I didn't ... read more
