OK, now honestly--tell me you saw THAT coming! Dallas had beaten them twice this season, Green Bay had licked them early in the year, and they are, after all, the 5th seed in the NFC. Now on to the SuperBowl and the undefeated phenoms from New England. Oh yeah, the Patriots also beat the Giants this year...by 3...in the last game of the season. So can anyone tell me why NE is favored by FOURTEEN?!? GO GIANTS! [View Full Entry]

We were lucky enough this weekend to meet up with friends from a while back, when Barb taught at MAST Academy on Key Biscayne in Miami. Lavetta and Lynn still teach there and were in New York with some of their seniors for a mock United Nations conference at Columbia University. They were all staying at a nice hotel not too far from us named "On the Avenue," where the photo of them and a few of their students was taken. The kids all went off for a day of chaperoned UN activities and the four of us went to Sarabeth's [View Full Entry]

I was first emotionally effected by a work of art in New York City. When I was 16 my family went on one of our last yearly pile-us-all-in-the-car-and-DRIVE-for-2-weeks vacations, a highlight of my childhood. This trip had the New York City World's Fair as it's destination and, being a teenager old enough to help with the driving chores en route, I was allowed to wander off by myself at times during our Fair attendance. There I discovered the Vatican's exhibit of Michelangelo's 'Pieta.' It completely blew me away, and I visited the sculpture at least 20 times. We have spent one [View Full Entry]

One of my biggest temptations, in the category of 'how to overspend your allowance in New York City' is theater. I love competent live performances of any variety--music, dance, lectures, or drama. In Vancouver we had two theatre subscriptions and a pass to all the offerings at the Fringe Festival, in addition to purchasing individual tickets to other plays. But living in New York pumps up the breadth, the depth, the cost, and the quality of the possibilities. There are several possiblities for seeing theater without breaking the bank. One of these is 'rush tickets' offered the day [View Full Entry]

There are so very many activities to enjoy in this city, it boggles the mind. Each and every hour of each and every day something is going on somewhere in New York that is interesting, informative, entertaining, and special... Of course, being retired, I tend to look first at the FREE stuff, and there is plenty of that to do. A very helpful web site is: http://clubfreetime.com/new_york.asp and while it has a nominal fee to join, the listings there will give you hours of daily activities. If that search is exp [View Full Entry]

While I have visited New York City on numerous occasions over the years (usually on one or two week vacations) I have never before actually LIVED here. That assumes a two-month visit qualifies for 'living here' but hey--I have a New York City Library Card, so I'm almost a resident! Here's another shot of where we live, Lincoln Center, taken from the corner of Amsterdam and 66th Street--Julliard, a fire station, and the aforementioned NYC library branch is to my back. When we arrived, New York was still recycling Christmas trees, and many apartment buildings would have piles of t [View Full Entry]

FINALLY! I'm beginning to feel better, more able to be out and about with my little pocket-sized point-and-shoot camera (Canon G7) with me. I have been to New York City multiple times but am still surprised on a daily basis as I walk around once again. For such a huge city there are still times and places where you can be relatively alone (see photos): I have always enjoyed taking images of the structures and conveniences we humans have built for ourselves, only without any humans in the photo, so the artifice and uniqueness of what we have constructed is more [View Full Entry]

I have never written a blog prior to this one. I have no idea how to find an appropriate "voice" for these entries. On one extreme lies the pitfalls of a simple enumeration of activities, an everyday litany of trivia ("Today I wore my stripped shirt, but decided against wearing a T-shirt under it when we attended the opera"). In the other direction lies pretentious seriousness ("serious-ish"?) and earnest soul-level revelations (most of what I've written so far, I fear). Since most of my emails tend towards the former extreme ("we did this, then we did this, then we did [View Full Entry]

Feeling metaphorical again... My body is in need of some healing and it's nice to have this weekend to simply sit and relax, conserve my resources, and let it fix itself. All around us there's the work of construction going on, images I've always been drawn to and enjoyed taking. During college, Michigan got out early, in April, allowing us to have first crack at summer construction jobs. There was the joy of not having to study when you went home, of getting a decent paycheck & having money in your pocket, of being physically tired from your efforts, of the [View Full Entry]

RAGE, RAGE... Sick in New York City. Feeling quite icky--nasal congestion, back pain, cough, conjunctivities, and heels so sore I can hardly walk. All this right when there is nothing I would rather do, having just arrived, than charge out into the city and walk for miles, breathing it all in, taking countless photographs of all that interests and delights me. . Alas. Truth is, I saw a physician before arriving and have appropriate meds for virtually all of the above--AND, there are great football playoff games on the tube today and tomorrow, so I would probably just sit on my [View Full Entry]
