| 29th April 2008 Alan | Felix - From: FELIX Felix is the name of the company doing the actual work. Companies working in New York City usually brand their plates like cattle, so they can't be stoloen and reused. |
| 13th April 2008 barbara | thank you - From: The Chrysler Building Your information on the Chrysler Building makes me want to schedule another trip to take another look. I do wish there were higher floors that visitors could go to. Once you get in there you just want to do something more. Thank you for the pictures. I especially love the last one. |

| 14th February 2008 ilona saari | OK - I'm jealous - From: THE NEW YORK TIMES As someone who has written op-ed pieces and essays for print media for most of my adult life - I'm really jealous that you got to tour the new NYTimes offices -- really, really jealous. All the 20 plus years I lived and worked in Manhattan, I never got inside of Times offices - ;o( Thanx for the pix, tho. I can now visualize myself there ;o) |
| 14th February 2008 ilona saari | Borders... - From: LECTURES & PERFORMANCES OK - now I'm just so ticked I'm not in NY w/ you... I loved going to those free events and miss them -- How fun for you to have gotten to that one. |

| 6th February 2008 Bob Rosen | New York, New York - From: FAMILY, RAIN, U2-3D Dan, Sounds like a great day in the Big Apple. Eva and I are going in June to visit family (big family wedding in New Joisey) and will spend a week or so in Manhatten. Can't wait to pick you and Barb's brains when you return. You are our travel gurus - first Argentina and now New York...Continue enjoying and writing your great blog.... Bob |
| 6th February 2008 Bob Rosen | Yay Giants! - From: 18 and...WHAT?!!?! Dan, Wow, to be in New York when the Giants win the SB in a huge upset...not bloody bad! Thanks for your account and game analysis. I had money on the Giants and got 12 points that I obviously didn't need. I was figuring the Patriots by a touchdown and I still win money...who knew? I watched the game on my new 42 inch high def TV (perfect for sports fans...) and it was really great to see a Super Bowl contest fought so hard and close with the drama of the Giant victory and Patriots defeat (I admit I felt bad for Brady and the Pats) Interesting local angle: Our BC Lions coach clearly identified with New England after we went 14-3-1 last season only to be defeated in the semi-final and not make the Grey Cup game. He said the SB "made him nauseous".... Really liking your Blog and wanting to read more.... Bob |
| 1st February 2008 Miri Garaway | Only in New York - From: FOOD! #1 Boy, are you ever efficient and wise to take advantage of all those wonderful prix fixe meals. GORGEOUS photos. What a variety of interesting interiors as well. May you continue to enjoy these gastronomic delights. |
| 31st January 2008 FRANK | KEEP THEM IN THERE - From: GO GIANTS! LIKE THE 49'RS IN THE'80'S, COWBOYS IN THE 90'S, THE PATS IN THE 00'S. YOU HAVE TO KEEP UP THE HYPE. GO GIANTS!!! |
| 29th January 2008 liz morantz | the photo bug - From: UNDER CONSTRUCTION... I'm sure you have you been to B&H Photo, a real ethnic experience. Can't wait to see more photos. |
| 28th January 2008 liz morantz | first impressions - From: OPENINGS At Miri's suggestion, I have invited myself into your abode. Right away I can relate, remembering several visceral reactions to monthly rentals. At Poppy Cottage in the Yorkshire dales, I was so impressed and relieved, I burst into tears. (I'd been calling it Poopy Cottage for weeks beforehand, in anticipation of massive disappointment.) Thanks for allowing me onto your blog. I look forward to page 2, especially since you live close to my kids on the Upper West Side. They have a small but wonderful place on 92nd and Riverside Drive. |
| 28th January 2008 ilona | speaking of pizza - From: TEACHERS... Another 'only 5 boroughs NYers' (and those from New Jersey) know about restaurant that was in our old east side neighborhood is Il Vagabondo - complete w/ bocce lane to either work off the red sauce pasta meal you just ate or kill time til your table is ready... It's a funky NY bar! It's a butcher! It's an open kitchen restaurant! It's a private upstairs dining room for guests from downtown 'little Italy' ! It's a long narrow room w/ tables for two and bocce lane -- It has great steaks from their own meat/butcher store adjacent! It has my favorite veal parmesan w/ a side of very garlicky sauteed spinach -- Have no idea if Zagat likes it or if it's even in Zagat (let me know if it does) -- but it was a favorite for wonderfully red sauce Neopolitan/NY Italian food... |
| 28th January 2008 ilona | Go Giants - Go Pats... - From: GO GIANTS! OK - I'm a transplanted NYer living in LA and have been a Giants fan all my life -- well, except when I was in college in Boston or visit all my relatives in New England... As usual, Richard and I will be attending an annual super bowl chili party -- I think I'll be cheering everybody... |
| 28th January 2008 ilona | food - From: FOOD! #1 OK - the pix are great (and I thought the ones on my blog were nice ) -- Wonder if you're going to get down and dirty and go to a NY 'coffee shop' for lunch - and the best cheeseburger in town (great onion rings and fries -- and layer cakes) -- "The Prime Burger" featured in "Breakfast At Tiffany's" (called Hamburger Hamlet or Heaven - I forget) -- and featured in my new thriller "Freeze Frame" has 'box-seat' seating w/ swinging trays, counter seating and some tables in the back. The old-time waiters where white jackets and bow ties... It's been years since I had one of their cheeseburgers, but I savor the memory |
| 28th January 2008 ilona | food, food, food - From: FOOD! #2 So - I'm jealous -- I miss NY and just plain living there and walking around the city. We have so many great restaurants in LA now that I don't miss the food as much as I used to -- but should I worry that your food blog is going to rival mine? |
| 27th January 2008 Lucy | Great site - From: FOOD! #2 Great job on your blog. It makes me want to plan a visit to NYC for restaurant week. All your other postings have been great too! |
| 26th January 2008 Eva | food - From: DAY TO DAY... When my friend barbara and I were in NYC for a week last year we bought some ready-made but quite exotic salads from Whole Foods in Union Square a couple of times. They had a fabulous variety of foods and were always packed and it made us realize that there are probably hordes of New Yorkers who hardly ever cook and can still eat wonderful food at home. |
| 26th January 2008 Eva Sharell | - From: AWAKENING... I thought photo O4 was the parking garage! All those pillars seem a little obtrusive and there are a lot of them! |
| 26th January 2008 Eva Sharell | under construction - From: UNDER CONSTRUCTION... Hi Dan, I'm just getting into your blogs....but tell Barb this shouldn't stop her writing her usual emails if she feels like it. I particularly like photos 2 and 3 in this series. Take care! |
| 26th January 2008 gary fairchild | sharon1015@centurytel.net - From: Rage, Rage... Dan: Your paragraph taht begins with "There is always the learnings from the arts..." is a CLASSIC; a masterpiece of journalism. It's time you started thinking about saving these photo/journal dialogs for a future book. Keep going brother; we're reading every eentry! We both enjoy this travelswithdan blog and will subscribe so that we can get them automatically sent to us at this web address. In the meantime, it takes a while to "allow for pop-ups" etc with this computer so please realize that even if I don't send you written comments, both Sharon and I have read and reviewed each of your blog's photo/journalism writings. More! |
| 26th January 2008 Miri Garaway | WOW - From: OPENINGS Gee, your studio is a lot nicer than Kayla's 'hovel' in Hell's Kitchen. May you enjoy every precious moment there. |
| 26th January 2008 Miri Garaway | not much you could have done - From: Rage, Rage... So glad to hear you are feeling better! (see, there are advantages to reading this backwards) |
| 26th January 2008 Miri Garaway | a confession - From: FINDING A VOICE... I must confess that I went from newest entry to oldest, to read your blog and I want to tell you that you are doing a great job. Boy, can I ever relate, being an 'almost New Yorker' (from Vancouver) myself. |
| 26th January 2008 Miri Garaway | I am coming over for dinner - From: DAY TO DAY... Isn't it great to have all that incredible choice of food at your doorstep? You chose an ideal neighbourhood for your two month 'digs'. I always wondered where the new Balducci's was. Thanks. |
| 26th January 2008 Miri Garaway | gems in your own back yard - From: MUSIC... You leave no stone unturned. How wonderful to discover these musical gems, not to mention fascinating venues. I love seeing the photos. Good for you! |
| 25th January 2008 Miri Garaway | Keep trying for WICKED - From: THEATER Sending positive energy for two tickets for Wicked. You MUST see it. There are bound to be cancellations in a theatre of that size, so if you do not get in on the lottery, just keep pestering the box office during the day; starting at 10:00 a.m. (but I am sure you already know that). |
| 25th January 2008 Miri Garaway | what a visual feast - From: ART... Great photos, Dan. Thank you for the 'tour'. |
| 25th January 2008 Miri Garaway | boy, can I ever relate to all that food! - From: TEACHERS... I was visualizing all that wonderful food. Yum - o - la. For some reason, the photos did not come out. Just black. For a BIG splurge, though, Gramercy Tavern is DIVINE. They also serve a much less expensive lunch in the front bistro (but no reservations for that one). |
| 25th January 2008 Miri Garaway | Awesome! - From: LITERATURE Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your wonderful photos. Did you take the free tour of the Public Library? May you continue to uncover all these treasures. |
| 25th January 2008 Randall Shirley | Other cheap theatre option - From: THEATER Hi Dan! Wicked continues to sell out because it is PHENOMENAL. Don't worry, if you don't see it in NYC, Kevin and I can act out the whole thing when you're back in Vancouver. You might also try Craigslist for last-minute tickets...occasionally some poor soul needs to unload them at the last minute (but beware of scalpers and agencies). Meanwhile, you forgot to mention one of the finest sources of discount theatre tickets, www. broadwaybox. com. It's like an online clearinghouse of all the other online discounters, including the excellent theatre resource, www. playbill. com. By the way, since this blog service automatically strips links, I've added spaces after the dots in those addresses. Big hugs, Randall www. randallshirley. com |
