First, the kudos. Warren (aka Casanova) has developed a website for our little group/band!! It's up and running for the most part, complete with pictures, a copy of the full-mix version of "Sunset in Ranong", and I'm sure there will be more added as time marches on. Anyway, if you want to check it out, the URL is (appropriately) plumpishthai.com. This really is beyond cool - Warren, you are my hero! Now if only we could convince you to don leotards and a cape... Now, on the last bit re: my two cents... The following is an email I sent out to the second group that was set to go on with Diane & Ray on the next Thailand/Burma trip, many of whom were nervous about it as we had been... --------------------------- I just wanted to ... read more

Last Day in Ranong

After all the sun and beer and food and laughter of last night, this morning was a relatively slow-moving thing. Yesterday started off easily enough... We checked into our "resort" (read: bomb shelter) in Ranong. A pit. Really. This, however, cannot be the fault of Ray & Diane as they had never taken a group to this place before so ours was the trial run... Needless to say, Di was looking for other places by the time with left! Still, after so many days at sea with mediocre on-board showers, it was lovely to get to stand in a hot shower and feel TRULY clean. I forgot how great that was... We spent the day lazing, mostly. I went to lunch with most of the crew, and then afterwards relaxed with some of the guys with ... read more

The Rigors of Bird's Nest Soup

Today was by far one of the most interesting days I think I've ever experienced in my life. It was very much like something out of "Ripley's Believe It or Not". In fact, I'm not even sure that "interesting" is quite the right word for it. Maybe "bizzare" or "freakish" is better... Anyway, it was strange. The day itself was fine and started out as any other here in paradise - perfect. Sun shining, birds singing, fish swimming, sea eagles diving, and crabs crabbing. All was as it should be. We took another dive which was brilliant - I went down with Ray again, but not for as long this time. Then we all were going to take the dingys (or the kayaks) and go on a bit of a field trip into this cave where ... read more

Start with a lazy morning filled with instant coffee, an early swim (with great attention being paid to whether or not anyone had recently used the bathrooms), and yet another one of Joy's fantastic breakfasts complete with all things fresh and tasty...and it only gets better from there! Around 10am or so, a few of us decided to go for a kayak - Di told us that there were some little coves and beaches that were worth exploring (not that we needed any persuading) so we were off. I paddled with Katie, followed by Jean, Steve, Shauna, and Warren. Before long, we came around the side of the island to discover that, although we thought we had been living in paradise, we were most gravely mistaken. Where WE had been staying was certainly a version of ... read more

Today I took my first scuba dive ever! It was, in keeping with the theme of the trip, fabulous. One of those things that I've never done mainly never having been given the opportunity, but have always thought that if I ever tried it, I'd like it. I love it when I'm right! We started with a Lesson in Scuba taught by Ray who used to be a scuba instructor. He showed us all the equipment, how it works, what the signals are that you use under water, and a few other bits. It seemed most people had been diving before at least once, but then not everyone was keen to go either. My first decent was with Ray. I got all loaded up with a tank, flippers, weight belt, and various other paraphanelia and took ... read more

January 30th 2005

So right now we're in Burma, although the bulk of this blog is about Ranong, our last Thailand stop for a few days. We had our overnight sail (which I thought was so fun b/c of the constant movement) Katie, Warren, & I had the first shift from 10pm-12am. Then we had to make a relatively long pit stop in Ranong before leaving Thailand to get into Burma and get our passports all sorted out, etc. THAT was an interesting experience. First off, you can't dingy into Ranong yourself. The only way to get to shore is to hail a longtail boat and pay for a sort of water taxi (which looked to me to be no more dangerous than riding in a European cab). We could only manage to get one longtail to hold all ... read more

A Word from Patong

In Patong Beach now which is another town on Phuket... We've been everywhere it feels like. Did more kayaking yesterday around Phi Phi Le which I think I mentioned before as being the smaller of the Phi Phi Islands (Phi Phi Don is the one that was hit with the most damage in this area and has been completely closed). Joy and her husband had lived on Phi Phi Don. They had a dive shop there which was completely destroyed along with their home. Thankfully, Joy told me, her children are at boarding school in Bangkok so they weren't there when the tsunami hit. Her husband, however, was. Joy said that he lived through the horror which is amazing in and of itself since pretty much everyone else around him died. A friend of theirs who ... read more

I know it's been a couple of days and the only excuse I have is that I'm on vacation and just haven't felt like writing, but today I have some time so here goes... Last night was one of my favorites so far. We dropped anchor off Ko Lanta and spent "happy hour" at a recently rebuilt bar on the beach called Relax Bay and, well, what was there to do there BUT relax? And so we did. Of course, all you had to do was glance down the beach and see the remains of debris that had been deposited by the tsunami...longtail boats, driftwood, and even a bed. When we arrived, a Dido CD was playing over their speaker system. Next to the bar, 4 hammocks beckoned. We all ordered a mix of fru-fru drinks ... read more

Trip is just so fabulous, and seems to be getting more so every day... :) We've been on the boats for 2 full days now and have just stopped in a place with civilation (obviously) and are going to be having dinner shortly. Our last night in Kata Beach we went back to the Ska Bar and were out till...uh...well, late. Played some interesting games ("If you could have 5 people in your hot tub, who would they be?") as well as came up with a name for our "group". We are calling ourselves Plumpish Thai. This came from a conversation that began with "Thai women are so thin" which led to "What do they eat? Maybe we should follow the Thai Diet Plan" which ended with Katie announcing that she didn't think ALL Thai women ... read more

From what I understand there is a blizzard going on in New York right about now which I'm actually kind of sorry that I'm missing... However, I'm sitting in Phuket wearing nothing more than a sarong and a tank having just come from lunch at a Thai place on the main drag of Kata Beach, and getting ready to go to a Thai spa for an hour and a half massage for a little under $20. So I guess you could say I'm having my own brand of fun. :) It is absolutely amazing here, but also sad... The Thai's are thrilled to see us tourists (I seriously think we may be the only Westerners staying in this area...). The Thai's seem to be very intent on getting back to business as usual...in fact, it's really ... read more
