This was a nice, relaxing weekend! Friday night I went to the Blaserphilharmonie concert in the Grosse Saal. I was actually supposed to play in this concert but I'm glad I didn't! It's a long story...The concert was nice. Benjamin Schmidt, a violinist on faculty at the Mozarteum, played a concerto and he was incredible! After the concert we went for a drink at Weizzz on Theatregasse, just down the street from the hall. As it turned out, they were having karaoke that night! I ended up singing the Baywatch song with somebody. It was fun but it was pretty bad! A couple of other guys sang and one of the trombonists and trumpet players got out their instruments and started accompanying them. Sounded much better than the singing :) We have been having some really ... read more

Oh wow am I tired! Hopefully I will make sense in this... About a week ago I joined a Tae Kwon Do school here in Salzburg. I am SO happy to be training again. I have missed it so much and I am glad I finally have time to do it again. This past week of classes also reminded me of how out of shape I have become :( I have a lot of work to do before I am back to where I was before but I'm willing to do what I need to do to get there and beyond. Unfortunately I have to miss classes one or two days a week because of my German class. I had heard that a group of people where going to Berlin this weekend but I didn't really ... read more

Day 13 (Thursday, October 1, 2009) Today is my 21st birthday!!! Buuuuuut I’m in Europe so that doesn’t really mean anything here ☹. Thursday is market day so I decided to buy myself some tasty presents at the farmer’s market. I got there around 10:30am and stayed for a couple of hours. There was SO much to choose from that I really had no idea where to start. It was pretty overwhelming but it was great! I walked through the market for a while to see everything before I bought anything. Probably the most difficult part was buying cheese. I knew I wanted to try some cheese but I had no idea what to get. I stood there for the longest time trying to see if I recognized something because I had no idea what the ... read more

Day 12 (Wednesday, September 30, 2009) Wednesday was laundry day. I know I know nobody wants to hear about laundry but this was something different. So in order to do laundry I had to go to the office and give a 15 euro deposit to get a “key”. The key is this sort of USB-like thing and I had to put money in it. In order to put money in it I had to stick it in the coffee vending machine in the lobby and then stick coins in the machine. Hmmmmm. Then I had to stick the key in the machine and I could take it out once the machine started. Has anyone seen this anywhere else? I don't know how common this kind of thing is. Between the 4 buildings that make up my ... read more

Day 11 (Tuesday, September 29, 2009) I met with Britt around 10am Tuesday morning. Britt is another American student of Vlatkovic’s but she has lived in Europe for several years now. She had been extremely helpful through emails before I arrived in Salzburg and she had offered to show me around school and help me figure everything out. After I met with her I had to go to the bank to pay tuition. I needed to do this ASAP because then I would have to wait several days for the money to go through before I would be in the system and be able to register for classes. It would also be when I could finally get the letter that I needed in order to complete my residence permit application, my student bank account, and allow ... read more

Day 10 (Monday, September 28, 2009) On Monday I could finally pre-register at the Mozarteum. It seems that for every step, there is a long complicated process followed by a lot of waiting. I was warned about the Mozarteum’s inefficient ways and I guess I’ll just have to get used to it. I didn’t know what I was supposed to do so I waited in the long line at the office to find out. I had to go to a computer in the lobby to fill out a form but everything was in German so I was having a hard time figuring out what to do. I finally got to the right page but then it wouldn’t work. I went back to the office to tell them and they gave me an annoyed look and then ... read more

Day 9 (Sunday, September 27, 2009) My dad had booked the hotel through Saturday night so I stayed until Sunday morning. I slept in just a little bit and went down for breakfast before I had to check out. When I walked in Anna, the waitress, saw me and looked surprised. “What happened? I thought you go back to Texas?” I explained to her that I was staying here for school. I enjoyed my breakfast outside one last time. I checked out at 11am and hopped on a bus to my place. I unpacked my stuff and organized my room but that didn’t really take very long. It was so lonely since I still didn’t know anyone here yet. It was Sunday so everything was closed. I didn’t have a way of contacting anyone since I ... read more

Day 8 (Saturday, September 26, 2009) Saturday was mom and dad’s last day with me in Salzburg. ☹ There were still some things they wanted to see and we needed to wrap up whatever was left to get done. We started the day by going to Helbrunn Zoo. I love the zoo! It was a beautiful sunny day for it too! We saw zebras, rhinos, tigers, leopards, bears, monkeys, a fox, boars, etc. I’m so used to the Houston Zoo where there are always workers riding around in carts keeping watch over everything. But here we were just on our own. It was very calm. People were even petting the animals! (it was not a petting zoo). You can even drink beer at the zoo! I can easily spend all day at a zoo but there ... read more

Day 7 (Friday, September 25, 2009) Today we went to Vienna! It was kind of a last minute decision but I’m glad we went. Several people told us that the trains were nice and that the ride to Vienna had beautiful scenery. Sure enough, the train ride was nice! Much more comfortable than the plane and the view was very nice. This was the first time I had ever ridden on a train. I always wanted to ride in one thanks to Harry Potter. haha. Next time I will have to sit in one of the cabins to get the full Harry Potter effect. Yes, I know Im a dork. :) We got there around noon and were only going to be there for the day so we didn’t have a lot of time. I knew ... read more

Day 6 (Thursday, September 24, 2009) We decided to do something different for breakfast this morning. We had already eaten at Café Wernbach for lunch and dinner a few times, so why not give breakfast a shot? On our way there we ran into the farmer’s market in front of Mirabell Palace! What a pleasant surprise! We browsed a bit and then headed to breakfast. Of course my mom’s good friend, the nameless waiter, was waiting for us. Haha! The food was delicious as always. We sat outside of course but it was a little noisy. There were all these tractors and big trucks passing through the street. I wondered what was going on. We headed back to the hotel to get our cameras for the next tour and then made our way back to the ... read more
